I'm curious if these EKG tests are done in an actual public live show? It seems like divorcing that part of the experience robs the efficacy of the results, as the shown examples appear to be a single person/small group of people watching a show, which misses a lot of the experience (said as a former avid concert goer and practicing musician with 23 years experience.).

Hi, thanks for your comment. I'm one of the researchers leading the EEG aspect of this work (and a gigging musician and lifelong fan of live music). We certainly do have plans to measure audience responses in naturalistic settings like a concert hall or a less formal gig venue. For this we hope to acquire several portable wireless EEG sets like the one pictured in the video. For our first study, we chose to bring musicians to the lab so that we could make our EEG and GSR (skin conductance) recordings under more controlled conditions with our high-quality (but non-portable) equipment. EEG is very sensitive to noise both from external sources and from the participant's movement, so we expect this to be more of a problem outside of the lab. As always with research, there's a trade-off between the level of control you can achieve and the generalisability of the results to naturalistic settings and behaviours. We hope to achieve the right balance over time.

I should also add that the demonstrations in the video, where the EEG data are displayed in real-time above the musical ensemble, was done specifically for the video and is not how we actually run out scientific studies! Looks cool though, doesn't it 😂

@@JasonTaylor-nt3hr It does and thank you for your response! I look forward to seeing what all of you involved in this find out!
