Good day sir. I just wanted to say thanks for the video. I just replaced my water pump on my 97 series detroit 60 and your video was a lot of help. My dipstick was a lot further back so I didn't have to contend with that. My biggest issue was getting the new pump to seat flush. The O ring was stopping it from seating completely no matter how much I twisted and pushed. I had to get the 3 bolts started then torque them each a little at a time to draw it in flush. I'm not super mechanically inclined so I was pretty proud of myself. So far it's all holding together. 🤞 thanks again sir.
Great video Gordon greetings from the United states virgin islands in the carribbean us territory st.thomas I am new to your channel and I am learning a lot my dad was a diesel technician he passed away last year he taught me most of what I know so far about heavy duty trucks and earthmoving Equipment so I am going for my certification and and my CDL thanks for the great content keep the videos coming God bless
Hi brother... Today i follow up this video and did exactly as you explained and changed my water pump. Thank you so much for your very clear and camera angle explanation on each details even the wrench sizes. Wow i love you. Thanks again !
I like all your videos. You stay so calm the whole time you are working. If I did videos like you do there would be a lot of cussing. Very helpful video. going to go do one this morning
Great video Gordon greetings from the United States Virgin islands in the carribbean Us territory st.thomas thanks for the step by step instructions I am a journeyman heavy equipment mechanic myself my dad was a diesel technician he taught me most of what I know so far I got nine years of heavy duty trucks and equipment repair experience thanks for the videos I already subbed God bless
love ur videos im surprised you just didnt change the back plate on that pump runs like 15dollars cheaper route that changing the whole thing thanks for taking ur time on everything u do very informative for the rest of us keep on truckin Mr Gordon greetings from mcallen texas
I was more concerned about the seals on the shaft after 22 years, the bearing and the leak in the back, it was time to just change it out. I don't have time to do to many rebuilds on parts. I will repair or rebuild starters and alternators though. Gracias por mirando mis videos y saludos de E. St. Louis Illinois.
Thanks for a very timely and useful video. The worst part of the job was that dipstick removal. I cut a wrench to brace the bottom part and still ended up breaking the dipstick tube. I’ll bet I spent the better part of an hour fiddling with it before I gave up and twisted it off. Thanks again :)
man this is such an amazing video im looking to change pump and some hoses in my detroit 12.7 this is just what i needed to do it next turbo and radiator 😂😂
Always an education! Gotta love your "practical wrenching" style, from both the mechanical and vid production standpoint. Top notch as usual Gordon! Anybody ever tell you you sound like Robert Duvall?
@@GordonRobertsonDIY I can see the Johnny cash, though he was just a little more "basso". On vid at least, your pitch and timbre are a near perfect match for Duvall.
I heard those downpipes were expensive, but I didn't know they were crazy-expensive... and they now seem to be an endangered species. Up here in the Great White North where we put more salt on our roads than we do on our food, those downpipes on FLD's would be LUCKY to see 4 years. I knew a guy who after having to buy one, just resigned himself to cleaning it off, and re-painting it every summer in an effort to make it last longer. I'm sort of surprised that you didn't go around to some of the (collar-swivel) fittings and douse them with a penetrant of some sort. Obviously, they came apart nicely, except for the dipstick tube (ironically, the one that should have been self-lubed by oil...). All in all, it was a fine job, though.
I'm doing a video on painting that pipe and show what happened to my old one. I do hope you use more salt on the road than on your food, the Doc says don't put too much salt on your food.
Time is always an issue is why I didn't paint it.The thermostats are less than 2 years old, the rebuild kit came with new ones. I might paint it later.
Hi Gordon, thanks for the great videos. You must remind me of someone I knew back in the 90's. ha. But I was wondering if you could save some money by having those water hose pipes made at maybe a muffler shop with pipe bending equipment. Just a thought.
Thanks for the video and I always wonder why the piping it's so expensive, there's no mechanism involved or electronics I mean it's just what it it's a piece of pipe yet they're crazy expensive
It would be great if you let everyone know the part numbers, maybe they can't find better deals on the price, than depending on freightliner, keep up the good work
Hey Gordon any secrets into installing rear break lights? I've tried grease, lube, and lithium grease nothing, the lights won't go into the rubber, about tricks. Thanks
I would have been tempted to just replace that seal, but logic says if that seal started seeping, what state is the other seal facing the impeller? Coolant in oil is an absolute mess to deal with.
Do you have part number on the new hose couplers you used and the dip stick tub? You should start showing part numbers in your videos. Would really hope out. Thanks!
Good video, I'm new to the channel very entertaining, been working on cars over 40 years, it would be nice to work on something that's made to be worked on.
Welcome aboard; I worked on cars full time a long time ago, now just occasionally, I drive a truck full time now and I work on my truck and a couple other's and small engine equipment and such as well. Thanks for watching.
Gordon can I ask your opinion; so mine is leaking but only from that back bottom bolt. Do you think it’s the pump or just the seal.. This water pump is only about two and half years old. It was replaced when I had my engine rebuilt.
Gordon Robertson I only said it because when I bought mine 14l Detroit two Mechanic’s told me it was bad for the liners so I flushed it out. I figured it was bs tho
Gordon Robertson It’s not the color. It’s the fact that regular green coolant doesn’t have the anti cavitation additives needed for diesels. NAPA sells their coolant additive that’ll bring it up to diesel specs for about $15 .
Wayne Swicegood I know about the phosphate level in the coolant, I added that to mine about 16 years ago when I bought it and ran about 900,000 miles and don't know how many times I had to add antifreeze in those years (green from the auto parts store) and never added phosphate additive again. I did an in frame overhaul on it at 1,487,XXX miles almost 2 years ago and the liners were clean, no pits, just a very minimal pitting in the block in one cylinder. I'm not saying it doesn't do anything but is somewhat over rated as much as over priced antifreeze at the dealer. It is a good idea to use the additive but not an emergency and in my case, I don't put a lot of miles on it anymore and will get some additive some day. Thanks for watching.
You need to use a nitrate supplement in your motor . Get test strips you dip in coolant adjust until the color is right on the chart. It will save you a lit of issues the economy antifreeze will not usully have nitrate additive
Not likely, it has 2 seals, 1 on the antifreeze side, and it does have a weep hole to let antifreeze out before it gets to the other seal that keeps the oil in the gear case.
How long had it been leaking mine just started yesterday? Planning on fixing at this weekend but it's like a hundred and ten here wondering if I could run it a couple more weeks?
Just replace the rear seal all the work and money he spent was unnecessarily a waste of time and money just REPLACE THE REAR O RING FOR ABOUT $5 DOLLARS AND THE LEAK IS STOPPED IT'S ABOUT A 5 MINUTE JOB AND THERE'S NO BOLTS OR HOSES TO TAKE OFF
Nah- I did my pump And thermostat-5 hours, And thats with taking breaks. I dont have the monster c-15 where you have to remove the Ac Compressor and Radiator support. I have the C-12,Those pumps weep internally- 30 minute job to remove 30 back on and 30 to do fittings-etc......Took longer for the thermostat housing- Seals were frozen inside.
Car coolant will eat the liners in a diesel. There is a real reason you have to check nitrate levels. You can get extended life coolant for diesel engines for the same price as auto coolant.
It will never hurt this motor doing local low speed short runs. It's the long term high engine speed, high mileage/ hours engines that are threatened by "green" antifreeze, not weather gas or diesel.
@@GordonRobertsonDIY Gotcha. Just had a friend need an overhaul at 350,000 on his because he didn't maintain his coolant. Does it need timming
Why is there people not liking this
Because all the work is unnecessary just replace the rear O RING AND YOU ARE DONE IN ABOUT 5 MINUTES AND ABOUT $5 DOLLARS

When it's cold oring shrinks when it gets hot it expands
