Played this more than Mario when I was a kid. Maybe the first game with that “one more game” hook about it. This one gave me blisters and callouses for sure.
2 things I've noticed..... :) Some of the characters look like Mario from SMB 3, and they also use the Victory Song from SMB, only altered a bit at the end, and sped up.... :D I guess not many sprites were available when they were putting them into the games file... ;)
My brothers and I would play this for hours on end! I always got a kick out of how the spectators all looked like Beatles clones, and how loud they got in the final seconds if the game was tied.
Great review as always! By the way, you _can_ pull the goalies in this game. On the title screen hold down the A and B buttons on both controllers, then press Start on controller 1. This also has a nice side-effect on the puck :)
A friend of mine has this on his NES and tomorrow i'll grab a bag of beer and i'll spend the afternoon there playing tournaments with some people he invited. Love this game!
@kubevubin That's because old NTSC TVs had an overscan. There is a small percentage of space outside of the image that you would normally "see" because it's not drawn within the frame of the image on a typical CRT television. It appears on captured videos though because the video capturing hardware grabs everything. Also - I suspect that an NES dev would see no reason to waste resources by drawing sprites outside of the overscan.
I think the old school sports games are better then the onces on newer stuff. Ice Hockey is a great game spend alot of weekends on it. I will say Blades of Steel is a great hockey game too. Great job CGR HD.
Great game...awesome review...although I was booing you when you hid behind the net. That's so bush! i still remember beating this game in the 100's There was a trick in shooting from the centre circle. Great choice.
I used to play this game with my father as well & whenever I watch a NHL ice hockey especially the Philadelphia Flyers this game's soundtrack comes to mind this could had also been a great NHL based hockey video game for the NES if licensed by the NHL of course.
Just simply one of the funnest nrs games to play if you have a somewhat equal opponent. Tense and exciting, palms sweating for sure. We played this game for id guess hundreds of hours
Man I remember having this game as a kid and I used to get SOOO MAAAD because the computer would whip my behind but that was motivation for me as a kid to get better and eventually I beat the compter!!!
Heeeeeeeeey, Mark What's up dude? It's been a while since i've dropped you a line. It's Joe From, Pittsburgh, Remember..,the Saturn games. Are you ever going to review Mr Bones, or Beyond Oasis, man? Those are great games that should be showcased on the show. At any rate. Wow, How about the Hawks, huh? Oh well, Pens will Raise Lord Stanley next year most assuredly. This was a year of transition. GREAT review, dude. Only thing missing was some brew lol a little hop devil, perhaps lol.
@FortuneNeko he did review that for the Sega Master System. It looked really choppy and somewhat buggy though. Double Dragon II on the nes though is one of my favorite games of all time.
as a canadian im glad other countries are getting better at hockey as the entertainment gets better and better. However its still our game damn it!! lol ;) nice review
After all these years, this is probably still my favorite game ever. The only sports game I was ever good at. In fact, my only problem with this game is I got too good and now no one will play me. I guess after beating up on all my friends with double-digit shutouts it's to be expected. haha
WOW, thanks for the memories Mark! This sure brings em back, but I still preferrred Blades of steel. The BEST Hockey Game EVER was NHLPA 92 (or 94?) On the Genesis. (Can ya tell I'm Canadian? LOL)
I begged my dad to get me this game when I was a kid. He did and didn't hesitate to tell me to my face that it cost $40 at Target. Even as a 10 yr old I thought that was a fucking shitload of money for a Nintendo game in 1990. Well I did the inflation adjustment and today(2012) that game would be a whopping $70!!!!!
Great review, this game does look awesome lol and I need to get this game on the wii. Makes me think of a cool soccer game I had on the NES..can't remember the name of the game tho..
@rmenes yea I wouldn't mind seeing him give that a go since all of his hockey reviews are awesome. He previously reviewed NHL 2K for the Dreamcast on his original run with Dave and reviewed Atari 2600 Ice Hockey.
Played this more than Mario when I was a kid. Maybe the first game with that “one more game” hook about it. This one gave me blisters and callouses for sure.
One of my all-time favorite games. Holds up ridiculously well.
+Nelson Kaiton wow, Nintendo did ice hockey, its really holding up.
I tried it but I can't even beat the first AI opponent. Any tips ?
photo-realistic graphics for the time!
Still one of the best CGR reviews!
I soooo miss this game! Besides river city ransom & super dodge ball, this is a all time favorite game.
Those were my favorites too
Fun childhood memories with this game. The stick bashing before a fight... funny as hell. Thanks for sharing this video.
One of your best reviews yet mark! It's good to see 2 players, makes it more exciting to watch!
This was the most intense video game review I’ve ever seen. I cheered every time Canada scored. Good review.
I loved this game when I was 9. I always went with all skinny dudes. :)
Used to play this with dad all the time in the late 80's/early 90's. We loved the brawls.
2 things I've noticed..... :) Some of the characters look like Mario from SMB 3, and they also use the Victory Song from SMB, only altered a bit at the end, and sped up.... :D I guess not many sprites were available when they were putting them into the games file... ;)
Played the heck out of this with my brother when we were little. It still holds up! I played it the other day lol
one of my all time favorite hockey video games. spent alot time playing this as a kid
my childhood!!! the battle between players are so funny! so memorable
Mark you are the fine wine of UA-cam Video game reviewers!
what a great review! I was actually on the edge of my seat and was really excited when you won.
This game provided hours of fun back in the early 90's.
lol ha I love the "WTF" @ 4:03 that was an instant classic
Love the classic 8-bit music, great review and great game. The 8-bit music was the most inspirational of all to me. :D
FIGHT! FIGHT!!! gotta love that pixelated blood. i used to always pick fights with the other teams. blades of steel is an awsome hockey game too.
This one and NHLPA '93 are the best oldschool hockey games. They are as much fun today still as they were back then when they were new.
I LOVE your hockey game reviews, you are so awesome dude. I'm going to watch/like/favorite every one of them.
Damn, this episode was the funniest one Ive seen since, probably, the People Hunt review from the old days. Nice job Mark. FREE BEER HERE
man 8-bit sounds just makes everygame better its just the best game sound they sound so cool:D
And this is why Mark should do the classic game reviews. Keep the classic gold coming.
This is the most fun sports game that I have ever played. Ahh...brings back high school memories...
Nice game and WHAT A COME BACK!. I could never beat the computer.
we will rememeber that match for a long time..
awesome review, i could wach it all day.
we want more rivalry mark ! more MArk vs...
My brothers and I would play this for hours on end!
I always got a kick out of how the spectators all looked like Beatles clones, and how loud they got in the final seconds if the game was tied.
one of the funniest reviews you ever done Mark! and you should try to post a version of this with you and derek and the cursing XD
Aww I remember this game, so much fun back in the day :)
Swedish Ice Hockey fan here btw.
This was the first NES game that I owned. My mom and dad gave it to my for Christmas in 1988.
I loved this game. I used to hold the puck forever with the fat guy and let go the lighting shot go.
Watching you two play, I acted the same way as I do when I watch real sports!
Classic Game Room was the first channel I subscribed to years ago
This review nailed the experience perfectly.
I missed this game when I was a kid. Shame. I would've loved it.
Great review as always! By the way, you _can_ pull the goalies in this game. On the title screen hold down the A and B buttons on both controllers, then press Start on controller 1. This also has a nice side-effect on the puck :)
What song is used for the 1980esque sport's montage? It's pretty awesome.
OMG!!!! i REMEMBER THIS GAME. I loved it. They should rerelease this.
I like the crowd around the side!
This is one of the best games on my ~500 NES-game cartridge for the GBA... Good fun on the road.
The graphics have such a awesome classic NES look too them!
I remember playing this game as a kid
A friend of mine has this on his NES and tomorrow i'll grab a bag of beer and i'll spend the afternoon there playing tournaments with some people he invited. Love this game!
You will hsve a blast....... 6 years ago
I must have been 10 when I used to play this game with my dad. He was not a gamer but he would always beat me... Good 'ol Days!!!!
Do you make all the music for these videos? :)
that was one hell of a sports montage comback!
another nes-game to collect....my wife is killing me ^^
great show!!!
I still play this till this day damn
definitely my favourite NES game, so unbelievably fun.

Great game...awesome review...although I was booing you when you hid behind the net. That's so bush!
i still remember beating this game in the 100's There was a trick in shooting from the centre circle.
Great choice.
that was an epic match. from 3-1 to 3-8 to 10-8 :P one of my favourite reviews :D
What happens if it keeps being tied? Is it shootout, no goalie period, shootout, no goalie period until a winner is declared?
I loved this game. I always ran 1 fat, 2 meds and 1 skinny.
I used to play the hell out of this game. Loved it.
20 years later, this game still rules
I used to play this game with my father as well & whenever I watch a NHL ice hockey especially the Philadelphia Flyers this game's soundtrack comes to mind this could had also been a great NHL based hockey video game for the NES if licensed by the NHL of course.
GO FLYERS!!!
What a comeback! U-S-A! U-S-A!
It's nice that you've started doing NES reviews! :D
This was a great review, thanks for the laughs.
Just simply one of the funnest nrs games to play if you have a somewhat equal opponent. Tense and exciting, palms sweating for sure. We played this game for id guess hundreds of hours
i just love that game, just bought it on the wii virtual console!
I like the stock music Mark throws in around 5:00.
Your review here may just have helped me choose how to spend my last 500 Wii points.
Love seeing some more NES reviews
First game where the whole team could fight. Classic!!!
Man I remember having this game as a kid and I used to get SOOO MAAAD because the computer would whip my behind but that was motivation for me as a kid to get better and eventually I beat the compter!!!

Holy shit xD I had this game when I was young! I remember that I liked to make them all fight!
I love the USA vs. Canada part
@FortuneNeko
he did review that for the Sega Master System. It looked really choppy and somewhat buggy though. Double Dragon II on the nes though is one of my favorite games of all time.
America can have this one. Canada will see you this summer! :p
as a canadian im glad other countries are getting better at hockey as the entertainment gets better and better. However its still our game damn it!! lol ;)
nice review
I always played more Blades of Steel back in the day, but this game was still awesome
Still one of the greatest hockey games of all time. Just beaten by Blades of steel for nes and EA hockey genesis
that was one of your better reviews! ! great job!!
If you end in a draw in the 4th period, you go again to shootout.
Great laughs with your review!
After all these years, this is probably still my favorite game ever. The only sports game I was ever good at. In fact, my only problem with this game is I got too good and now no one will play me. I guess after beating up on all my friends with double-digit shutouts it's to be expected. haha
+Mikeum Too bad it can't be played online..
OMG I would wreck house! If they did an online ICE HOCKEY I would be ecstatic. After a while beating up on the CPU 13-0 gets old haha
one of my favorites on the nes
Excellent game...round robin tourneys are still a norm in my house.
WOW, thanks for the memories Mark! This sure brings em back, but I still preferrred Blades of steel. The BEST Hockey Game EVER was NHLPA 92 (or 94?) On the Genesis. (Can ya tell I'm Canadian? LOL)
YA GO CANADA!!! WOOOOOOO!!! Aw man... We Lost :(... XD Awsome Review. Wish i could find this game again. Probably just head over to the flea market :P
that soundtrack of the 80s montage is bitchin.

yea I wouldn't mind seeing him give that a go since all of his hockey reviews are awesome. He previously reviewed NHL 2K for the Dreamcast on his original run with Dave and reviewed Atari 2600 Ice Hockey.
This game is one of the best sports games ever made. RBI Baseball 2 takes the cake though.
A great review for a great game. I hope the opposite doesn't happen for a bad game.
The one thing I did not like about this game was the clock. Why not have a normal ticking clock??
GO CANADA GO! Great game, awesome review!
All the Nintendo NES sports games like "Soccer" and "Ice Hockey" are great.
"They will never...WHAT THE F(BEEP)!!!!" That seriously made me laugh.
If i gets this system soemday, i ought to look for this game
Sick video as usual Mark!
