Sometimes I feel more like I’m cleansing or refocusing my intentions more than the cards. I often feel like my intentions are distracted or I haven’t connected enough to the question or shuffling.
I appreciated the variation in cleansing techniques! I knock 3 times on the back of my decks to cleanse before every reading. If it’s a new deck, I’ll usually do a smoke cleanse with either a handmade bundle (I love cedar), or an incense stick.
I shuffle my deck(s) for me and the deck getting to know each other and the deck getting to know my energies, so more of a 'charging' then a cleansing, but I totally understand using the shuffling as a cleansing cause your moving the energy around the cards.
I love the Woooo Wooooo part of the tarot practice. Loved you showing all the bits and pieces you use. Reminded me of some of the things i use to do and moved away from that I am now going to re-visit, while of course continuing my new methods that I have started doing also. Thank you again Lisa, I love everything you bring to your channel. Terri from Australia 🦘 🇦🇺 💜
I mostly use the term "clearing" in the context of my cards. I only read for myself. To clear the previous reading I riffle shuffle with my cards face up. If the reading was heavy I will use Reiki as I shuffle with the intention to cleanse and clear. Selenite is my go-to crystal for cleansing and clearing items as well as bringing in Moon energy. I generally avoid smoke cleansing and incense because we have cats. The older cat likes to be around when I am doing witchy stuff.
Thank you for sharing more options for cleansing decks. I do multiple readings back to back and sometimes I notice I need to cleanse my cards and currently have a sage candle I use. I will be looking into other things.
You've put into words why I resonate (🤣 no pun intended) with sound cleansing so much. 😁 I adore using my singing bowls for cleansing. Maybe I'll get a little shaker too. I like that idea a lot. I like cleansing with Selenite or Smoky Quartz also. My go to cleansing a deck is simply shuffling. Between allergies and asthma, smoke is definitely a no-go for me. I'm not often drawn to cleansing decks beyond shuffling very often. But the past few years I've heavily relied on my Happy Tarot and Affirmators Oracle for personal support. I haven't been drawn to work with them lately. Part of it is I'm using other decks. But I wonder if they would benefit from a more intentional cleansing after all that heavy usage. I'm going to give it a try. Thanks! I believe they're called tingshas.
When you set intentions do you say something specific? Like I say “cleanse this deck with love and light. Release any old, stagnant or unwanted energy and release and negativity.”
Whenever I bring a new deck in, I smudge it using a cone incense and then charge it with a couple of crystals. I do like the sound thing. I may do something like that before I do a reading as I think it would also help me center and prepare both the cards and myself before working with them. Like two becoming one.
When I do cleanse, I like to keep it simple too. Shuffling, putting in order, a bell or I use my breath and/or visualization. Rarely I'll add a stone to store with the deck. This was fun. Edit: I sometimes like to burn some cinnamon sticks to cleanse the air a bit, I try to keep incense to a minimum due to my allergies.
Very useful video, thank you. I don't like smoke so I use selenite on new decks. Before each use I shuffle or use a small bell to cleanse. I also put decks back in order if they haven't been used for a while. 🌟
I have never cleansed my decks before, but it’s something I can consider trying. On sound I actually have a really pretty rainstick I bought (I had one as a kid and just wanted one) and now I’m thinking about it. What’s funny about putting things in order is when I used to play with playing cards but I suppose I’ve been hesitant since each deck has a different order of things, but I suppose organizing it how I like it would be doable. That being said I’m not a great shuffler so maybe not. I actually love crystals. I have to look into them more because may use some of mine for that purpose. One time I left my stones on my windowseat to charge, though don’t think they got any moon and I’m not well versed on the phases, but I want to more. The only thing renotely smoke based I have is my diffuser I use oil in, but don’t think I’d do that :D I just feel a bit weird expanding and explaining it since I’m getting used to living with someone again, but I have to believe in what feels right :D
Great ideas !!! I can't burn incense at home because I don't really like the smell so I flame cleanse the cards. It's a bit tedious but it gets rid of major energy gunk.
This is so helpful, thank you for sharing. I usually use the smoking method with either incense or palo santo, and I have a selenite crystal I have specifically on my alter for cleansing both my decks and my jewelry. I need to try the sound method, I love this!
Oh I forgot to say all the things I do....Incense sticks smoke, every so often as I feel the deck requires it. ... My regular every day reading for myself I knock on the deck 3 times and then brush my whole palm over the as if clearing and pushing the energy away in that swipe. I then place the deck over my heart with closed eyes and thank the cards for the reading of clear clarity I am about to receive ( and I totally believe every word as I speak). Then I place my energy on every card by touching every card and placing it in a stack in front of me. Then I shuffle it. If I have not used the deck for someone else to read with. I will just use the deck the next day or over that week. Only having to knock on it 3 times and thanking the deck for their clear clarity. But if I am reading for some one I get them to do the same ritual with out the smoking the deck with incense stick or palo stick. As that is just something I do when needed. I also store some of my decks with a crystal or a shell that I feel belongs with the deck. When I go to reading I always use one of Peggy's Extra, Extra Large Tarot cloths. I place Crystals up the side of the cloth. Crystals mean a lot to me. This is why I love Peggy's Extra Extra Large Reading cloths as I love having room on my cloths for my larger crystal when I want them. Which reminds me I would love a few more of Peggy's Extra Extra Cloths for readings. Could you please let Peggy know I Have been keeping my eyes open for the more but they haven't been in her shop recently. I know Peggy will do more thats why I keep looking. My sister wants one also. Anyhow, getting side tracked. Those bells are called Tingsha bells. I also use them. Terri From Australia 🦘 🇦🇺 💜
Oh my gosh, when you first showed the shaker at the beginning, I was mentally noting "search for other types of sound cleansers"... and then you showed more! My ears are delighted 😄 I've been looking for ways to develop rituals of my own that feel "right" and natural to me. I love this reminder of involving the senses in this ritual/act of cleansing: smell, hearing, sight and touch sort of - should I find something to eat/taste to help "cleanse" as well? 😂 Oh and one more thing, the way you speak and teach is always so soothing and gentle. I've enjoyed so much of your teaching videos in the past and love that you continue to make so many more. Thank you!!!
Thanks Lisa. I used what we use locally like most ppl use sage...benzoin resin. I am feeling so much happier with my cards now. The somehow feel more colourful and bright.
I absolutely love the little sand rattle - or whatever is in it, sounds like small pebbles or shells even? 😮❤! I'm getting ideas for using this. In my experience, palo santo (and yes way to reference ethical sourcing🙏🔥🙏) has a way deeper, powerful cleansing effect, like it's more specific, whereas sage which I also love, is much more uplifting to me, like white light in a leaf if that makes sense? Thanxx so much for sharing ❤🕉️🌈!! PS i don't cleanse decks halfway often enough, and often I'll only notice it's 'off' after not using the deck for a longish time. It's like whatever I did with it last, sticks to it. I'll put them in order and let them lie with a crystal on for 24hrs or more. Feels like the cards get a nice rest that way😊. PPS your Tibetan bells are called Tingsha bells, i had 2 look that up...
@lisapapez do you ever pull cards and realize the entire message is for someone else, maybe Peggy? I recently did a spread and couldn’t figure out the message till it clicked that it wasn’t for me. Is this something that can happen?
Lots of good ideas here! I used to sage everything, but it's so smelly, and also I would rather leave the sage for those who have used it in their practices for eons. Now I have a selenite disk that I set the decks on overnight, then I'll shuffle around 10~ times to put my energy back in. Sometimes, I'll smoke cleanse with incense, but we have an asthmatic in our family, so I have to do that outside. ✌️❤️🃏🕯🪄🔮
The Tibetan bells you have are called Tingsha bells. ☺
Thank you!

YES THIS! :) For sure I think that's often what I am doing!

Tingsha bells I believe. I found mine at a head shop.
Your shaker reminds me of the sounds from a rain stick. I also like the thought of the rain washing the ick away.
I shuffle my deck(s) for me and the deck getting to know each other and the deck getting to know my energies, so more of a 'charging' then a cleansing, but I totally understand using the shuffling as a cleansing cause your moving the energy around the cards.
Nice ideas. I hadn’t thought about sound cleansing with rattles or bells.

I loved how you talked about it being effective when it has purpose and meaning. Great topic. ❤

YES Tingshas - thank you! :) Yesss if the deck has felt... distant... cleansing can be great to reset it!
When you set intentions do you say something specific? Like I say “cleanse this deck with love and light. Release any old, stagnant or unwanted energy and release and negativity.”
Sometimes! :) I'm hoping to make a video about words of power with divination as part of this series!
