  • Jim Wilson was an English instructor at Iowa State College in 1931 when he entered a contest sponsored by the Alumni Association for the best school song. Inspired by the Stanton Memorial Carillon, he titled his entry "The Bells of Iowa State." It won the contest and a $100 prize.
63 years later, Wilson returned to campus as Iowa State University re-dedicated the newly restored Stanton Carillon in 1994. Here he tells the story of how he composed "The Bells of Iowa State." It is then performed by ISU carillonneur Tin-shi Tam and the Iowa State Singers.
