Jan Matejko - Why Stanczyk's sad?

In this video, I tried to highlight the reason of despair of the man in red. Who is Stanczyk? There is information about his real existence. He was born around 1480, near Krakow and descended, apparently from a noble family, probably died in 1560. Little is known about Stanczyk, except that he was a jester at the court of three kings: Alexander Jagiellonczyk, Sigismund the Old and Sigismund II Augustus.
This painting, not the most typical for Jan Matejko, can be called a key work of his to understanding of Polish artist
