    flaps increase the wing surface area. so they provide more lift at slower speeds. they lower the flaps for takeoff otherwise they'll end up not lifting off before they run out of runway because the plane can't reach lift off speed fast enough on a 12,000 foot strip. for landing the flaps settings are adjustable for different speeds. the flaps on the top are speed brakes (spoilers) which aid in slowing for descent. the flaps are lowered all the way down when the plane is on final approach just before touchdown at 175-180 mph. if the flaps weren't lowered they'd be landing at a dangerously high speed in excess of 220-260 mph and may not be able to stop before overrunning the runway

      "flaps increase the wing surface area..."
      Not entirely correct. If that were true they would simply extend them straight back but if you notice on landings the flaps drop down considerably. It's not that they increase the surface area of the wing, but rather they change the profile of the wing giving it a

    The middle one moving fast is the Ailerons which control the movement and banking/turning of the aircraft, the slowmoving ones that gradually point down are the flaps which increase drag of the aircraft.

    Only flaw I saw was after landing, it is a general practice to make NO changes to flaps (retract) up until clear of the runway. The unlikely, but possible mistake of putting landing gear up has happened on many occasions - more so in general aviation - nonetheless all my training focused on after landing checklists - with flaps up - after clearing runway.

      +greysponge66 If your camera has a manual focus option, use that and set it to infinity. This will make the camera ignore window artifacts and not try to focus on them. On most consumer cameras such setting may be deep inside the camera menu, it might take some time to find it so you may want to search for the feature in advance. The airplane is a B767.

      They are actually just fairings that cover the mechanisms that move the flaps. The hydraulics are used on the PDU (Power Drive Unit) that drives rotary actuators thru long torque tubes to both wings for each mechanism. You can see one of the green actuators under the spoilers, bottom right corner. 4:45

      +lxthomas except that the air beneath the wing travels faster, not slower, than the air above. That results in the oft-0=discussed wing-tip vortices (aka "wake turbulence) when the two airstreams come back together at the trailing edge.
      Back to flaps: flaps add camber (curvature) to the wing to cause the above, which, in turn, adds lift. A low flap setting upon takeoff is intended to optimize lift vs. drag until airspeed is adequate for lift. Flaps are set fuller on landing where both lift and drag are important. The drag on approach allows a higher power setting on jet engines without causing an increase in speed. The higher power setting is important because jet engines are slower to "spool up" on lower power settings. Hope that helps

    • @jefffrohman1113
      @jefffrohman1113 8 років тому +4

      Actually the air over the upper surface of the wing travels faster creating a lower pressure than beneath the wing :)

    • @derekwall200
      @derekwall200 8 років тому +1

      +lxthomas the flaps on the rear and the slats in the front are designed to help a jet fly at lower speeds during takeoffs and slowing down for the final approach so they don't touchdown coming in too fast otherwise the jets weight (whatever remaining fuel, luggage, cargo, and with the weight of all passengers) combined will cause the jet to over run the runway on touchdown even with both engines on full throttle reverse

    No information, no descriptions, no voice track or graphics, no banana. If you don't know how flight surfaces work, you won't get the video, and if you do, you don't need it.

    Why is the Captain messing with the Flaps during Take Off and Landing
    its standard to olny do this wenn the plane is at 3,000 ft or during Taxi

      Airplane Fan 1998 the plane I fly we retract the 10 degrees of flaps that we used for take off at 300-500ft to the get the best rate of climb, nothing wrong with retracting flaps while climbing so long and the climb is established and there is a positive rate of climb
