  • The Irish Guards marching along The Mall in London to Horse Guards Parade for The Colonel's Review - the second full dress rehearsal for Trooping The Colour.
    At the front is the battalion's mascot, an Irish wolfhound called Conmael. The Irish Guards are allowed to have their mascot lead them in parade. Behind are the military band, the fifes and drums and the pipers who are playing in this clip.
    The tunes played here are all Irish. The first is Kelly the Boy from Killane; at 0:36 it changes to The Minstrel Boy; at 1:11 The Sash; and at 1:47 The Wearing of the Green. You can research the histories of all these tunes on Wikipedia.

    I was in a Scottish regiment - back in the early 1960s the 1st Battalion had an Irish Regimental Sergeant Major, a wonderful man, strict but fair, originally from Dublin. When he marched the Battalion onto the parade ground on his first parade as RSM the Pipes and Drums struck up 'The Sash' - he good naturedly shook his fist at them - then they broke into 'The Wearing Of The Green' - big beaming smile from the Tara! Happy days!

    @seosamh1921 2. The regiment
    The regiment was indeed founded on the blood of Irish people. The current Irish Guards were founded in 1900 by Queen Victoria to mark the gallantry of the Irish regiments in the second Boer War. An earlier regiment of Irish Guards fought on the side of James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

    Who would have thought that my little tourist video would arouse such lively debate! There are some deep sensitivities here, and I now know more about them than before.
    My stance on all of this? I think these fine tunes lie well together in this ecumenical set. I have nothing but goodwill for these soldiers and musicians. If they are playing your tune you should be flattered. It was their day, and they did a magnificent job. It's also their turf and they can play anything they want. End of.

And regardless if men from the south join they are joining the British army and pledging allegiance to the Queen and Britain , basically giving a 🖕🏻 to most things Irish while doing the one thing very few of the southern Irish do which is honouring the brave men from the south who fought for freedom and democracy under the crown and give. Their lives only to be ignored by “the south” so I really don’t see what point your trying to make claiming southern presence in the guards. It’s mute 🤐

    The Last tune played is the Wearing of the Green not the Orange ABC which is sung to the British Grenadiers. The tune to which the Sash is sung is an Irish Republican tune called the Battered Old Black Cap, the Londonderry Air is a Song otherwise known as in her bright bosom, Danny Boy is the Catholic version sung to the same tune in the same way as " Londonderry on the Banks of the Foyle" Changes to become "Lovely Derry on the Banks of the Foyle" .

  • @thebigdrum
    @thebigdrum  15 років тому +2

    I didn't mention any dates; you should check yours. Dion Boucicault (or Boursiquot, but not your spelling) lived from 1820 to 1890. He added a third verse to WOTG and included it in his play Arrah-na-Pogue where it is sung by Shaun the Post. This part was played by Boucicault himself in the first performance at the Theatre Royal, Dublin on 7 November 1864 (20th century?).
    You may be confusing this Dion Boucicault with his son, born in New York, who had the same name and lived from 1859 to 1929.

    @EarthPlays
    Both regiments have their distinct histories and of course the Irish Guards are part of the Guards Division while the Royal Irish are infantry of the line. So expect public duties if you join the Guards, i.e. guarding Buckingham Palace etc.
    It's just a matter of which regiment you want to see yourself become a part of.
    Also, they're not swinging their arms to full height because they're wearing their capes and carrying their SA80s in their right hand under there as well.

    Nothing here conflicts with what I wrote. I know that WOTG does not mention St Patrick's Day.
    I was referring to the way that the original words were forgotten as the tune travelled and people came to unauthentic conclusions from just the title and the tune. I was on your side on this one.
    I mentioned one example. A more extreme one is The Wearing of the Grin, a Porky Pig cartoon dating from 1951. It's on youtube. Have a look - you won't like it.

    I am proud to have served in the Micks.
    But also as an Irishman I can understand why some Irish feel this way. I am not saying it is right but will explain. It is to do with the Irish desire for independence ever since Elizabeth established the pale and set to destroy Irish people. The resentment to mascots is in part due to an awareness of the fact that these are Irish things being appropriated in an insincere manner by the "English". Irish/Scots/Welsh symbols becoming "British" (aka English)

    Thanks, gaelicpiper, for correcting me on the first tune, Like or not, The Wearing of the Green is often used to signify joy at wearing green on St Patrick's Day - very, very different from the grim original. For example, it's a pizzicato scherzo in Leroy Anderson's Irish Rhapsody (1949).
    Research Rule Britannia (and Britannia) and you'll find a development that is as complex and fluid as for any of the tunes here. I have never heard it used as a march.

    The dog is a gift of the Irish Wolfhound Society, intended to promote the breed. The first was presented in 1902 shortly after the formation of the regiment and was called Brian Boru. The current mascot is called Conmael. Why shouldn't they have an Irish wolfhound? By all accounts the 1803 revolt was a heroic failure and Lord Norbury sentenced RE to be hung, drawn and quartered.
    There seems to be agreement that:
    The execution took place in Thomas Street opposite St Catherine's Church (your St Ann St.?)
    He was hanged and then beheaded when dead (what is your evidence that the full sentence was applied?)
    What is your evidence for the burning and scattering on the Liffey? Why the debate on where he is buried if you are correct?

    @LordWellington15 I knew that. I was just saying "Irish troops" the way I might say "Scottish troops" of the Scots Guards and know very well that they're British.

    @beverage2008 I respect your sensibilities, but in political terms Scotland *is part of Great Britain. I got the impression that a lot of Scots are pretty miffed with people equating Britain and England, actually.

    The colours are to the rear of the Escort. At the start of the parade the Colours themselves are not held by the Ensign, but handed over to him as part of the ceremony. You'd need to watch the whole event, the Colours change position several times depending on the point in the parade. They lead the Escort for the slow march, but return to the rear for the quick march...

    The two tunes immediately preceding it - 'Kelly the Boy From Killane' and 'The Ministrel Boy', and the one after it 'The Rising of the Moon' are old rebel tunes, funny to see the Guards playing them up the Mall!

    You are technically correct - The Minstrel Boy is on Wikipedia's list of Irish Rebel Music - along with The Wearing of The Green.
    Thomas Moore's patriotic words, though not explicit, may commemorate (inter alia) his close friend Robert Emmet who took part in uprisings in 1798 and 1803. Emmet was arrested and hanged.
    Early versions had an 8 bar introduction - rarely heard today - which surely at least acknowledges Beethoven's 1801 Piano Sonata Op 26/12 [Funeral March on the Death of a Hero].

    The soldiers with the blue plume on the right side of their bearskin caps are from the Irish Guards, which is made up of recruits from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
    The ones with the white plume on the left side of their bearskin caps are from the Grenadier Guards, which doesn't have any particular criteria with regards to where you come from.

      Grenadiers are generally from the south of England, whilst Coldstreams are generally from the north. Plenty of exceptions though.

      You got the 1st, second and 4th one right TBD. The Third one is not the sash. That would be illegal.
