Oh this song… It’s nearly perfect. I haven’t been able to get that chorus out of my head for decades! This movie was like an elegy to a time and place that was unique and this song was just magical in the way it captured the early Athens grooviness. Just amazing…
The Beatles taught me a song need not mean anything to mean everything. The human brain is a rogue organism, it will go where it wants. Athens, GA 1980-84
Man, I listened to this song so many times. I listen to this song 100 times a year. Usually over a 2 or 3 day period. Always come back to it. I'm not sure why it hits with me. It reminds me of a place i never went, but can't wait to get back.
I went to summer school in 1990 in Athens. The first week we saw Pylon at the 40 watt. The next week we saw the Yams and the bass player for the Squalls was playing bass and smoking the a pipe. We saw Killkenny Cats and Love Tractor play as well. It was kind of the tail end of that era although Pylon and Love Tractor got back together.
Cool video, I had the cassette from the documentary "Athens Inside and Out" back in the day! Must've played it thousands of times while I was a student at USF Tampa. Really enjoyed the Squalls, Pylon, the BBQ Killers, Love Tractor and all the other great talent on that tape. Man I wish I had that thing digitized now, this song brings back great memories of my college days! many thanks!
Always loved this song. Other worldly harmony vocals by Bob Hay and Diana Torell. Swell lead guitar and if anyone's going to smoke a pipe, it might as well be the bass player. Forgotten how beautiful Diana is. Time to get out my VHS copy of Athens Inside Out again.
Me - Saw REM about 10 times in their small hall salad days; loved Let’s Active, Don Dixon, the Reducers, et al. But somehow missed these guys back then (was living in CT at the time..) - Just discovered them 40 years later. They’re like the missing link btw Marshall Crenshaw and The Connells.
@@e34eric 1980-84. Went back to visit about 2013. Buildings seemed to be packed in every square acre of campus except north at the arches. No big spaces scattered all over to lounge outside and read, no East Campus ag pastures. No magic. So fortunate to have been there then, it was a blast of a town at an awesome time
The lead singer? The white semi-teardrop guitar? I think that'd be a Vox semi hollow or a copy (don't think it's a real Vox...) And it'd have that natural twang and shimmer compared to the G&L Tele. The solos are on the Tele, the rhythm guitar is the Vox.
All wrong, sorry! It's an Apollo Red Baron. It looks nearly identical to the Teisco May Queen-both were made in Japan-but where the May Queen has dot inlays on the neck, the Red Baron has block inlays. Although interestingly, this is the first and only Red Baron I've seen that wasn't finished in red. Either Apollo offered it in other colors, or someone had this one refinished at some point.
This should be played on repeat for school kids FOREVER

every song on this record (Athens ga inside/out) is a killer. what a project.
I love this song so much.

Sounds great. Everyone looks so young and beautiful! Love the dancers, too!
Who is watching in 2020? I loved seeing the Squalls when I was a student 85-90 40watt club. If you have videos from that era or even now please share.

@@jontaylor9128That is a GREAT through line to draw!
Also in Athens, 85-88. I was a skinny goth punk. Tons of townie friends. Athens was magic. Pure magic.

This song is GOOD !
Love this track. Maybe unfortunate they were spotlighted next to some even bigger names and voices with the documentary. But fun to hear again. : )
BEAUTIFUL
The bass player doing a Donald Dunn impression : )
That bass player with the pipe and hat! lmao
Takes me back to Stichcraft days although this is GT or maybe the Watt
Diana Torell was so dang adorable.
What guitar does the lead singer have??
Ovation Breadwinner solidbody!
Actually it's a 1984 G&L made by Leo Fender after he sold Fender Co. and his follow up Musicman Co.
@@gabrielfricks-starratt6813 cool guitar. Has a great jangle too it.

This was funny :)
So lame they couldn't even come up with words for the chorus.
Gosh Sunny, that wasn't very nice.
@@gabrielfricks-starratt6813 only memorable band in that thing was Flat Duo Jets
