As a medical professional, I can confirm that restarting one's own heart during fatal cardiac arrest would indeed require massive amounts of super gay love. It's just basic biology and studies clearly show that platonic bromance simply wouldn't be enough, scientifically speaking. Sorry naysayers, I don't make the rules here.
Lyra Melpomene. I noticed that too and I did wonder about what was going on! But then I thought about the fact my friends always called me a lesbian at school. I always vehemently denied it, because I was in denial and couldn't cope with the fact that I wasn't who I thought I was. I think this could be what's happening here in John's case.
I personally noticed it the moment they first met, but I'm not trying to brag. They make it so _obvious_ while also making it flow so _well_ that most people observe and think enough to notice it.
Hm… well here’s one take on it. The only reason that he reacts when people talks about women, is because with women, the stakes are higher. With them, it’s for real. With them, he’s at risk of having to face his biggest fear; feelings. Sherlock is an man who learnt at a young age that feelings only get you hurt. Being cold hearted is his coping mechanism, which has kept him from being hurt ever since he was a kid, very efficiently even. Therefore, his braniac image is all he cares about, he thinks that’s all he has. When he solves crimes he’s in control of his feelings, and when he gets complimented on his logic skills he loves it because that’s what builds up his self worth, his ego. Just like women way too often are reliant on their looks to feel worthy. Without his brain, he’d only be an awkward nerd with no social skills and no friends (which is why he come to value John so much). So… by forcefully explaining that he’s not dating women, he is just making it damn clear to himself and others that he’s not weak. For example: When he refuses Molly, the stakes are obviously high, because she’s literally a potential emotional trap, something he doesn’t want to come close to. His defense mechanism goes bananas, and he just cold heartedly shakes her off, and manages to do so without hesitation because he’s not even into her. Also he’s sort of a dick, haha. I can even go as far as saying that the fact that Sherlock likes Molly so much as a friend, tells me that he might have fallen for her if his mental health was better. However, when John asks intimate things like that, Sherlock is at no risk of becoming emotionally attached - simply because he’s not into men! And since Sherlock knows for sure that a man would never have any emotional impact on him whatsoever, he has no reason to put up any walls. He doesn’t need his guard to protect him against feelings when it comes to men, because there are none. In the end, Sherlock can calmly tell John that he doesn’t want a relationship. And the reason he does that is not because he cares what others think of his sexuality, but because he needs to justify and keep up his cold hearted self image. To him self, and to others. The writers just tried to make the story more entertaining by including this comedic suspense. It’s meant to keep us on our tiptoes, and it works because nothing about Sherlock’s inner world is explicit. Well, apart from his mind palace, that is. And it’s a genius draw to never have Sherlock brushing the rumors off, because it keeps us wondering about this mystery man. And about Irene Adler? Well, she’s not emotional at all, and does not need his feelings for anything, so he can stay detached. And that’s very easy to him; after all that’s what he’s successfully been doing all life. He gets off on Irene because she’s safe. And that’s his trauma wound right there.
Can't two bros be jealous over each other's girlfriends, comment on each other's cheekbones, be mistaken as gay by their closest friends and other gay people and leave the other one's wedding early in a heartbreaking scene without it being romantic? Jeez.
Can't a bro cut out and paste his best mates head onto the naked form of Leonardo Da Vinci's anatomically perfect male body without people calling it gay? Gosh
The single thing that gives me the most hope is "If anyone still cares, I'm not actually gay....Well I AM. Look at us both?" There is no "bromance" interpretation you could POSSIBLY make for that.
all these moments put together it's so obvious, like i first watched it all at once thinking it was a gay show cuz i hadn't heard of the books before.. like it was a great show but the queerbaiting is just sad kinda homophobic, just didn't wanna lose views
What's real sad is that I'm the only one out of all my friends and families hat can pick up on the gay subtext of Sherlock. I rather think that it completes his character beautifully. Well as a bisexual person I happen to flirt with everyone and my friends are like "Why did he say that? He's not gay" and I'm over here in my mind like:"Common! You've watched the entire series with me and you haven't picked up that Sherlock's gay?! What's with your brain?!"
38:44 these choices were made for a reason, and that reason being queerbait. Thank you for being everything and so much more we deserved and needed this show to be when its creators and writers failed it and everyone rooting for it so horribly. 💗
It's telling that he says "I'm flattered by your interest" and then tells him he is married to his work instead of saying he isn't gay, which would be the normal response if you weren't.
Again, as it has been said so many times, girlfriends aren't his area but he knows boyfriends are fine and he just doesn't have one? Like what's the straight answer for that?
without tjlc the entire show makes no sence. I am not even joking. Everything. Every speech, every scene, irene Adler and "look at us both"..or "you look sad when you think he can't see u". if it's not because they are in love..then why? At this point john living happily with mary far away from sherlock doesn't make any sence at all. and that's because we saw clearly that sherlock can't live without john anymore. the same for john. LET THEM BE HAPPY pls
What convinced me was that John could've easily said that he was straight and ended the possibility of a romance there, but instead he chooses to say he's just not gay and leaves the idea of bisexuality open. That way it's not the "if it's you, it's okay" trope which has been done too many times as it is.
HOW SHERLOCK IS SO SOFT IN ASIP WHEN HE SAYS "dinner?" GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! kills me every time also, awesome video. i feel like this is the first one i should show my mom to prepare her for january. this one and the romantic tropes i think will be the most accessible to her as a casual
***** i didn't even know who wrote what but im honestly not lying. Well actually, im listening to the audiobooks on UA-cam and reading Watsons journal. (Its pretty darn cool, too! It had letters and envelopes and stuff) And...i dont have enough space on my phone for Tumblr. I use Lineplay :D Its a pretty cool app btw. I would recommend it.
***** no, i just know how to read a narrative when i see one. Im not saying the cases dont make sense (though some of them really don't without johnlock). Im saying the acting choices, music, subtext, and dialogue dont make sense. John and sherlock are best friends and have already killed for one another so, narratively speaking, where does their relationship go? Staying best friends doesnt fit the way the story is being told. The show is centered around common romantic troupes and the acting is pushing a romantic narrative. All the people involved in the making of the show are award winning professionals. They can't be doing all this by mistake; they are the ones who wrote it, filmed it, acted in it. You can't accidentally write a story with that much subtext and accidentally have your actors carry the show like a love story.
***** i actually have read the originals and trust me, it has a lot of homoerotic subtext that had to stay subtext (cause you know, the late 1800s weren't exactly kind to the gay community). But honestly that doesn't even matter because this is a MODERN ADAPTION. In this modern adaption, sherlock and john can be anything they want. According to the show's narrative, what they want is each other. Or you could just go watch the rest of the TJLC Explained series where Rebekah explains in full detail exactly how the show doesn't make sense without johnlock, seeing as though you're already here.
I just found your TJLC series last night and IT IS SO GOOD 😱 I studied film for two years in high school and my film friend and I have discussed at length about how Sherlock is just technically one of the best shows on TV right now (when considering cast, art direction, costuming, writing, CINEMATOGRAPHY, etc...) but we've never gotten into proving TJLC and I'm watching all your vids and the bits of mise-en-scene analysis you infuse into your videos is FANTASTIC and so well organized and you would make a great film critic. ❤💛💚💙💜 As a bi/pan female I found your John is Bisexual video really interesting and thought it was a great analysis and explanation! After watching it it just seems so obviousss. 😮 I also ADORE your hair evolution throughout the series. 😁💕
I've thought this since the first episode - Sherlock seems smitten with John when they meet in the lab (I prefer the unaired pilot, btw). And yes, Sherlock finds nothing strange in inviting a complete stranger to flatshare, but most people would. But John says yes! Mrs Hudson mentions there's a second bedroom if they'll need it (John gets pissy) (she knows Sherlock is gay so she assumes they are together). Angelo assumes John and Sherlock are on a date. Some of this is canon, some of this is creative screenwriting, some of this is supportive of Sherlock being in love with John and John continuing to be in denial. Moriarty and Magnussen epitomize skincrawling villains, and Sherlock's weakness. Sherlock is not at his best when he's vulnerable. And I still want to know: why did Mary shoot Sherlock and let Magnussen go? I'm sure she didn't expect him to survive. And why did John stay with her after he found out? And yes, Holmes and Watson together forever is canon. And so is Sherlock and John. Some folks don't support or are offended by JL, but not me. It makes sense and the attraction between them is just too obvious to ignore. I hope S4 is better than S3
He stayed with her because she was pregnant with his kid? Quite probably? And because she's a dangerous assassin who would easily kill them all if he left her? And because he doesn't know how Sherlock feels about him, also... But, mostly, I think he did it to keep Baby Rosie safe, although we all saw he wasn't able to keep the act for much longer, after Rosie was born, and pretty much jumped into the first random romantic alternative that he saw. He didn't ultimately commint to actually cheating tho, because of his high morals, and ended it himself, but that alone was enough to cause him to hate himself, only agravated by "Mary"'s "death". And then he felt so guilty and disgusted with himself that he shut Sherlock out of his life and took all of his pain on him. (Also, proyecting his own guilt, about not loving Mary in the first place, and emotionally cheating on her with Sherlock). It's all a big mess for the poor man. Brilliantly executed Evil Plan, however.
It's funny, with the ships I have for the show, Johnlock was always number 3. I was never that into it, partially because I thought that it was just something everyone shipped and because I just didn't really see it. I could never avoid their bond, however, or the subtext, because of course as a fangirl and active shipper, I pick up on these things. Before watching these videos, I think the one moment that perplexed me was in The Sign of Three when Sherlock left the wedding party looking very upset. Like, that made me think that he must have had deeper feelings for John. And then in His Last Vow with Sherlock saying goodbye. I was holding my breath, hoping for an 'I love you', course we got the girl's name comment instead, but you could tell what he wanted to say. After watching a handful of these videos, it really makes me a believer in this ship. It would be crazy if it didn't become canon!
One of the things that consistently impresses me with your videos is how concise and articulate you are. I realize that comes from HOURS of script writing and editing, and then recording and editing, and probably doing retakes of challenging bits, and making sure EVERY WORD is clear. That is hard to do and you do it well, and it makes your videos stand out head and shoulders above most of what is on youtube. Thank you, it makes you not only watchable, but re-watchable! would-be vidders, take notes on Rebekah's techniques.
So, no lie, I kind of hated Sherlock for a while because I thought it was a jumbled up mess with bad writing and I was so confused as to why so many people liked it. And then I found these videos and my entire body went "OH! YUP, OKAY." And suddenly everything makes sense . . .
yeah like botany cumberbatch said, it doesn't really make sense to me why you, ladyblakeney, would ever have thought the show was a mess or bad writing. generally even people who assume no gay stuff love the high quality show and careful writing, etc
Well, I mean. There were characters I didn't think were necessary to the show (Molly, Sally, Anderson, Dimmock), relationships that made no sense (Sherlock and John as friends is a very weird, destructive friendship, John and Sarah never seemed very invested in each other), cases that were brilliantly plotted but that got pushed to one side in favor of random subplots (most noticeable in A Scandal In Belgravia); it all sort of meshed together to feel messy and poorly written. *shrugs* I'm no screen writer, but I do write, and it seemed a little like the second or third draft of something, where you're trying to weave all these elements from previous drafts together into something whole. The high production values further confused me (because why would you throw money at a show that seems to have no real point?) and I stopped watching after "The Reichenbach Fall" because it wasn't worth putting up with that much confusion. I feel like maybe if I had watched "The Empty Hearse" when it first came out I would have figured it out on my own? Maybe? Basically, I wasn't expecting it to actually do the thing and have John and Sherlock's romance be the through-line that holds the show together. And if you pull that out of the story, the whole thing kind of crumbles.
Dear Rebekah, We are all going through a tough time right now with handling series four. I just want to tell you that although I am quite devastated, I'm still going to hold out hope. I believe that someday the true story of Sherlock Holmes WILL be told, if not by these writers. And maybe it will be one of us who tells it. In a way, you already have. These videos are as well thought out as the show itself, if not more so. You're opening our eyes to the true plot. You're telling the true story, even if Moffat and Gatiss are not. Don't lose hope, because someday the true story will be told. And in a way, it already has. Much gay love, A hopeful fan.
This series made me feel all better, after watching Season 4. And, honestly, I still believe just as much as before! It's not over yet, guys! There's still Season 5, for the Moriarty reveal, the "Mary" reveal and, of course, the Gay Elephant in the room. And also, please keep in mind that Season 4 ended with Sherlock and John back in Baker Street, together, raising baby Rosie like a happy family! Don't give up yet... There's still a LONG way to go. :)
in A Study in Pink, when John asks Sherlock if he has a boyfriend and he says no, John says "unattached, like me" BUT in the Latin American version, John actually says "single, like me" ;D JOHN WAS ASKING HIM OUT JOHNLOCK IS SO REAL AND I SRSLY DON'T UNDERSTAND THE PEOPLE WHO SAY IT'S NOT I MEAN WHAT MORE EVIDENCE DO YOU WANT IT'S ALL RIGHT IN FRONT OF US
I will still come back these videos. All of them are so clever and beautiful! And it all makes way too much sense, for it NOT to be right. I still believe, and will continue to believe, long after Season 5 and the whole show is over. We are not stupid, and we're not wrong. The curtain hasn't fallen yet, the Game is not over, and all of this beautiful work only proves it further. 💜💜💜💜
For the most part I know that Moffat, Gatiss and Virtue are going to make Johnlock canon, but there's that tiny, consistent flame of doubt welling up every now and then, that they won't go through with it and leave the TJLCers hanging. But there's one moment in the show that never fails to calm my doubts and strengthen my faith in TPTB:They made John and Sherlock reunite in a Restaurant called "The Landmark"!Whenever I see that sign in TEH it feels like the producers are sending me this personal message, asking me to be patient and faithful... because landmark representation has to be done right and with such delicacy, too. And that's what they're doing. And that's why I'll stick around and not abandon this show. That's why I won't stop believing, despite that tiny flame of doubt.
watching this after season four gives me so much hope. i suddenly feel much less sad, you are love. all this effort put in your videos. i admire and look up to you so much. thank you.
I think this video has aged better than you might think-in fact, it has aged far better than the series BBC Sherlock has or ever will, given its frankly ridiculous finale. Why did they include all of those "comedic" queer-coded interactions between Sherlock and Watson? Because, if they never intended for either character to be interpreted as queer, it just reads as cheap gay jokes-even by the standards of the 2010s. Truly, the TJLC literary interpretation of BBC Sherlock elevated it beyond its source material!
I want to add to what you said in the beginning about if you believe a gay romance is going to happen you have to explain every detail. The sad part about that is having legitimate proof backing up your statements but then people go 'you're overthinking and turning nothing into something' like whAT DO YOU PEOPLE WANT?!
Outright, in-your-face umambiguous confirmation in explicit text, not just subtext and inferences because they alone aren't enough with regards to being undisputed and also providing legitimized representation. And, especially, when taking into account that the repeated Word of God from the writers say 'No' to the question of Johnlock themselves. (And to which, TJLC believed them to be lying about that, until TFP, which unfortunately shattered and legit traumatized Rebekah and other TJLCers). Even the cornerstone belief that the writers deliberately aiming for the Johnlock endgame was completely shattered when the writers revealed that they were telling the truth that 'Sherlock and John would never get together in the show' and that they never meant the gay romance, only just 'flirting' with the homoerotic subtext and queer jokes out of tangent reference to 'The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes'.
My first comment on youtube ever! but you're so worthy it. I've been binge watching your videos and now I believe. I feel really dumb for believing my cup-of-coffee-eyes ( see, I'm learning! ) and buying into the silliness of " they are just really affectionate friends". I actually see it for the beautiful love story it is and I want you to know that , even though I'm not the first nor the last person you have shown the truth, what you are doing is incredibly useful and does help those of us who lack the vision or are just plain ignorant to read behind the not-so-subtle lines. Keep up the good work! And on a totally unrelated note you have a very soothing and hearth-warming smile! you have an official italian fan now! =)
So I found your videos about a week ago, and I've been binge-watching them every spare moment I get in the days since my discovery. I'd just like to thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I've read all the original stories since I was small and have seen almost all previous film adaptations of the lives and adventures of Holmes and Watson, so the fact that you continuously reference these resources gives you invaluable credibility, engages as educates us as viewers, helps us look at things from alternate perspectives... Seriously, thank you for the time you put into this. These hiatuses kill me. As I know they kill everyone else in our fandom. And as you stated, a lot of us second-guess ourselves, we get nervous, we think it's not going to happen. You give me hope. And I'm actually thankful that I found these videos because now it means I can re-watch the show without getting devastatingly frustrated (of course I don't get that way with the pilot - the pilot is all-around beautiful), so there's that, too. Again, thank you so much. You're so dedicated and thorough and it means so much. Looking forward to your next videos. Keep up the fantastic work.
I whole heartedly believe they where so adamant on wanting johnlock to be a surprise thats why it never became canon and the series ended unfinished. Had to come from a place of ego, especially since as the show progressed these interviews appeared to be more and more passive aggressive. Writers wanting to be more clever than their audience, as if their audience picking up on the clues they purposefully placed is somehow ruining their build up
I think that they were at least willing to play around with the idea, even if only in a joking manner-right up until the point where fans started to engage with the subtext seriously. Honestly, I just think they grew resentful of their large, vocal queer audience, so they decided to throw in the towel for season 4 and phone-in some random, tonally dissonant bullshit so they could get it over with and take home their paychecks 😂
If its not gay... then why does the show even exist? The puzzles, crime-solving and side characters are all great but we all know the real reason this Sherlock is much more beloved and successful than most other adaptations :P
why did they always bring up romance and lgbt in the interviews and then proceed to produce the shitshow season 4 was? was it really just a cheap gay joke after all?
Don't they at some point in the series say that smart is the new sexy? Unless I'm mistaken, they do, and if that happens to be the case, then when Sherlock says that John is "smarter than he looks" and agrees when John (in Sherlock's mind, so it's really Sherlock) says "pretty damn smart then" he's basically saying that he thinks John is pretty damn sexy.
I bet they know your channel & have a love/hate relationship with it.. On the one hand you get what they're trying to tell us but on the other hand you spoil the surprise they've been planning for ever :D
I will say, though, that as someone who relates a lot to sherlock and really understands him, some of these moments aren't exactly queerbaiting. fx: sherlock was being "petty" towards/around john's girlfriend because that's his personality. he is usually very petty and always corrects people when they make mistakes. another example: when sherlock crashed john and sarah's date it didn't have anything to do with sherlock being jealous or anything. he merely found an opportunity (john's date) that would help him with his case and used it for his own good. i ship johnlock (or i think that sherlock is at least romantically interested in john) but i think it's important to take context and the nature of sherlock and john's character into consideration before you call any scene/moment gay/homoerotic. and i'm not trying to nitpick i just think it's important. sherlock also describes john's wedding as going into battle because there's going to be lots of people that he doesn't know very well and he has to make a speech about john in front of those people. this was a running theme in the episode, people being afraid that sherlock would panic because he had to make a speech in front of lots people.
Aww, I feel a bit bad writing this but I am excited to hear about your HLV pain? Having seen all of your videos up to now, I anticipate that you mean the kind of pain when you're empathizing with Sherlock and John's painful moments. When I started reading M Theory, I skipped down to HLV first (analysis of the relevant blog posts first, then the episode) because I had an idea of what it means to me and it made my heart swell reading it, made me love it even more. I think that because the romance is mounting from the beginning, HLV reveals a lot of their love for each other and seeing how far Sherlock is willing to go for John (he'd do anything) and that's why I like it so much. M Theory also gave me a lot more to think about in terms of sussing out what Mary's motivations most likely are, in addition to Janine's and Moriarty's. When I started to understand the things going through their minds, it seemed like the only thing left is the main story: that John and Sherlock are deeply in love with each other and circumstances keep driving them apart. As I've been watching your videos over the past few weeks and rewatching the episodes for the upteenth time, I've realized that I can't actually think of another story with this level of romantic tension. I'd fall back on X-Files but it felt like "I just know it's going to work out for these two" in the early years of that show (heteronormativity why you so omnipresent??). I didn't even think "John" the first time I watched the interview with Gatiss and he said the phrase "grumpy bisexual" but OMG YOU ARE RIGHT. It helps me a lot to have others act as the guide in terms of showing the way the writers change their tune in the interviews. When they pull the rug out from under the audience at large in the show, they could also still clearly say "regarding the misleading interviews: you should have seen it!" because they are telling us that they're intentionally misdirecting for the sake of the show. Because they love the show, and they take it even more seriously than we do (probably. maybe. possibly they take it exactly as seriously, hehehe). I've been a lot happier in my day to day since I stopped being deeply disappointed feeling sure that it was mindless queer-baiting. I have acute depression and any meaningful happiness in my life is a big help. I've even been tapering off alcohol (have to go slow because I have moderate withdrawal and we can't afford the inpatient detox copayment--and no, my doctor is not happy about it, but we already did bankrupcty earlier this year to clear massive medical debt for a surgery our son had and it will be bad for us to go into debt again if it can be at all avoided). I'm not saying my happiness hinges on BBC Sherlock (at all)--a lot of it comes from the support and validation I get from fellow trans and queer people every day in the support groups I engage with. But this helps too. It's really nice. :)
The title cracks me up. Wonderful video, as usual! Made my (slightly oblivious) husband watch this and by the end he was like - wow, this is so blatant! So thanks 👍😘👍
I mean... if a woman and a man were acting like THAT with each other on a tv show it would be nearly impossible for them to be seen as friends, you take only one of this situations and change the sex of one of the protagonists and you have a big fandom no question asked even though just one scene isn't quite enough to prove they're lovers. And there is A LOT MORE than just one scene !!!!!! It's sad that we have to prove their love when it's so obvious but I'd have to admit, before I imagined one of them being a woman I kind of wasn't a 100% sure there was something there. I thought I was maybe imagining it because I wanted it so much and I hate myself for it cause the signs are REALLY obvious ! The sex/gender shouldn't have affected how I felt about it but despite everything we are still in a society where it's easier to be accepted as a straight man/woman (hince the molly/sherlock ship when you know, no matter how you feel about Johnlock and wether John is bi or straight, Sherlock is gay !)
Because Sherlock doesn’t have any friends or anyone that sticks around for too long or anyone that understands him. This has never bothered Sherlock until he met someone like John who he thinks of as a friend. Every time John has a date or girlfriend Sherlock feels like he’s being replaced and that John won’t have anymore time to spend with. Sherlock was confused and lost because he’s never had a friend so he didn’t know how to react.
Sherlock might me bad with humans and interpreting their emotions..but he is also one of the smartest and most observant people ever So let me ask you: if the most observant man alive thinks that you're flirting with him..don't you think you might me flirting with him? Another thing is that Sherlock is obsessed with being right and he corrects everyone and everything (even the TV), yet he never attempted to correct anyone about him and John dating.
I've learned to avoid watching or reading interviews, maybe after the run of the show finishes, we'll get something honest out of them. Till then, stick to these vids and the show, and fic!
I feel like when they finally get together there's gonna b loads of footage that they show of previous scenes but with added bits, like the grave speech will be shown with "I love you" at the end as well as a bit that's always been there but we didn't know about it!! Can't wait for the three garridebs ep
While I agree with everything else in this video, there are three things I took differently. 1) "I wish you weren't whatever you are" might have meant "if only you weren't so crazy. If you were normal, I'd like you more." Not necessarily "If only you liked women." 2) When John keeps mentioing the dinner and how Sherlock has a girlfriend, I took that as just shock and amazememt. Sherlock is so...not openly into women, it's strange seeing him with one. Yes, that probably was jealousy, but there are many interpetations. 3) Same thing with the proposal. He just fake proposed to a woman that will be heartbroken. John is a kind person, a compassionate one. He can imagine what she will feel when she learns that was fake. And he is trying to understand why Sherlock is so detached from social norms that he thinks it's okay to do this. But anyway, the things you said about the wedding made all the sense in the world! I do believe John loves Mary...but maybe not as much as he love you know who. And at 35:25 I love how in the close captions it says, "heroic throat clearing" 😄 Anyway, really glad I found you. Gonna be binge watching all of your videos now!
Sherlock needed Janine only for the case "Magnussen" and he obviously didn't have fun with to fake a relationship. He felt so clearly uncomfortable in her presence. There wasn't any other possibility to get into Magnussens office, because Janine was his personal assistant. I have to protect him here. Janine knows, and it was not about Sherlock is crazy. I mean, they had a "relationship" and never sex, not even once? "I know what kind of man you are" meant she knews Sherlock isn't interested in women. Janine: "I wish you weren't, what ever it is what you are." Sherlock: "I know." She meant actually the same. Sherlock isn't detached from social norms, he only didn't understand them always that's why he needs the help from John to understand better how to deal with people.
So, I dont have a tumblr account or anything, so I'll just say what i think here. Season 4 so far seems to be markeded like an action movie, full of thrilling dark scenes. (I do think its gonna have a lot of action, but i also think its going to be very, very emotional.) So I think they want to keep the casuals close, epecially those who dont want too much emotion. Mofftiss is doing it right, softly, gently, so none of the casuals notice before its "Too late" (And everything explodes into rainbows and kisses and unicorns.) :)
This was a very comprehensive video; I like that! I did think of valid explanations for some of the questions, but most of them the only answer was "because gay!".
Hello again. Have you ever thought about making a video about the Granada Sherlock Holmes series from 1987? I love it, especially since Watson never gets married. Surely there are some really cool metas regarding the Granada series.
This has to be my favorite episode of TJLC explained. I've watched it a handful of times already, every time I'm feeling any doubts about what's to come. It's just so perfect to me.
Concerning John's session with his grief counselor, there's probably a lot of anger directed at Sherlock for dying, (it happens), which could be (another) reason why he has difficulty expressing those feelings of abandonment when Sherlock isn't there for two years... (I have had a lot of anger towards a friend of mine who passed away - why didn't she take better care of herself... etc...) So - that could be one of the (other) reasons besides "unspoken love" not being "allowed" to be expressed, even after death...
I'm not sure if you specifically pointed this out, but in the scene where Irene reads all her texts to Sherlock in front of John, they all ended with "Let's have dinner", in which John directly makes the conclusion that she flirted with Sherlock. Meanwhile we have another character who also seems to ask about dinner a lot *cough*Sherlock*cough*, see where I'm going? Anyway, I'm really looking forward to your HLV video since it's my favorite episode (and the one who made me tear up a bit). So thank you for making these videos, you mean so much to a lot of us!
Rebekah, srsly, you make me smile so much with your descriptions/phraseology/humor in all of the vids, but this one really had a lot of fun moments. Also, not to be creepy-stalkerish or anything, because I know I said it in a previous comment, but I really do like your hair like this. Lovely. Enjoying all of these vids so much, and I'm dreading getting to the end, because they've been like little fixes for my Sherlock addictions, y'know? Thanks for all your efforts, and that of your sources and helpers, for making them!
19:57. Love how “ fire exposes our priorities” and Sherlock is rescuing John more than his own wife and johns focus is not on Mary, she’s blurry, but only on Sherlocks face.

The fact that Sherlock's heart literally started again because of John is the gayest thing ever seriously there is no competition.
EXACTLY
FR
I have literally no idea how you can possibly watch sherlock and not pick up on ANY of the gay subtext? ?? ? ?!
Or it could be that he thinks his feelings are unrequited as suggested by many other observant awesome people. Or both. Something like that.
God, I can't believe I'm saying this. . . it's just heteronormativity.
Jeez.
Just bros being bros!

"Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."
Can't a bro cut out and paste his best mates head onto the naked form of Leonardo Da Vinci's anatomically perfect male body without people calling it gay? Gosh
Sorry, but your life is a lie.
The single thing that gives me the most hope is "If anyone still cares, I'm not actually gay....Well I AM. Look at us both?" There is no "bromance" interpretation you could POSSIBLY make for that.
No heterosexual way of reading it.
And add to that the silent stare of John.
all these moments put together it's so obvious, like i first watched it all at once thinking it was a gay show cuz i hadn't heard of the books before.. like it was a great show but the queerbaiting is just sad kinda homophobic, just didn't wanna lose views
@@dzydzy101wait you watched Sherlock without knowing the Sherlock Holmes books existed???
If it's not gay, then why can Rebekah fill a 45 minute video with scenes directly from the show that don't make sense if it's not gay?
"He comes back from the dead for John... platonically?" AHAHAH it killed me
thanks for these videos! hope you have a great day (:
Technically, through his best man speech, Sherlock has, in fact, in canon, told John that he loves him more than anyone else in the world.
You know what they say, "It's a show about a detective, not a detective show."
38:44 these choices were made for a reason, and that reason being queerbait. Thank you for being everything and so much more we deserved and needed this show to be when its creators and writers failed it and everyone rooting for it so horribly. 💗
i was looking for the recent comment saying this didn't age well but it doesn't make it less sad :c
I just dont understand why they would do that, the creator being gay
It's telling that he says "I'm flattered by your interest" and then tells him he is married to his work instead of saying he isn't gay, which would be the normal response if you weren't.
tylergirl1970 EXACTLYY
Again, as it has been said so many times, girlfriends aren't his area but he knows boyfriends are fine and he just doesn't have one? Like what's the straight answer for that?
Obsessed with these videos, usually I wouldn't have the attention span to watch long videos, but these just have me so hooked
This is very me
The two types of long videos I watch, Sherlock and your videos :))
without tjlc the entire show makes no sence.
*cough* *cough* Brotherly love *cough* *cough*
What convinced me was that John could've easily said that he was straight and ended the possibility of a romance there, but instead he chooses to say he's just not gay and leaves the idea of bisexuality open. That way it's not the "if it's you, it's okay" trope which has been done too many times as it is.
HOW SHERLOCK IS SO SOFT IN ASIP WHEN HE SAYS "dinner?" GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! kills me every time
also, awesome video. i feel like this is the first one i should show my mom to prepare her for january. this one and the romantic tropes i think will be the most accessible to her as a casual
the show doesn't make sense if it's not gay
it really doesn't
***** no actually. Im aware of the private life of Sherlock Holmes and im currently reading the original series...which are both amazing gay.
I use Lineplay :D
Its a pretty cool app btw.
As a bi/pan female I found your John is Bisexual video really interesting and thought it was a great analysis and explanation! After watching it it just seems so obviousss. 😮
I also ADORE your hair evolution throughout the series.
Sherlock's best man speech was his (barely adjusted) wedding vows to the love of his life.
I get so happy whenever you upload

I love that this is essentially a Johnlock highlights reel.
Thank you, it makes you not only watchable, but re-watchable! would-be vidders, take notes on Rebekah's techniques.
its been seven years...... why didn't sherlock tell john already 😭
So, no lie, I kind of hated Sherlock for a while because I thought it was a jumbled up mess with bad writing and I was so confused as to why so many people liked it. And then I found these videos and my entire body went "OH! YUP, OKAY." And suddenly everything makes sense . . .
Glad you finally watched it, welcome to the fam 💃
Can't see why you ever thought it was badly written to be honest!! Respect for watching Rebekah's videos when you didn't like the show though :)
yeah like botany cumberbatch said, it doesn't really make sense to me why you, ladyblakeney, would ever have thought the show was a mess or bad writing. generally even people who assume no gay stuff love the high quality show and careful writing, etc
Dear Rebekah,
We are all going through a tough time right now with handling series four.
Much gay love,
A hopeful fan.
thank god these videos exist idk how I would survive until season 4

This series made me feel all better, after watching Season 4. And, honestly, I still believe just as much as before! It's not over yet, guys! There's still Season 5, for the Moriarty reveal, the "Mary" reveal and, of course, the Gay Elephant in the room. And also, please keep in mind that Season 4 ended with Sherlock and John back in Baker Street, together, raising baby Rosie like a happy family! Don't give up yet... There's still a LONG way to go. :)

I’ll second all that
How are u so sure of season 5

"A grumpy bisexual person"... Did you mean John? Lol
LITERALLY
That's why I won't stop believing, despite that tiny flame of doubt.
oh my
lol gattiss and everyone kept repeating they were not writing a romantic love story between them you guys don't listen
watching this after season four gives me so much hope. i suddenly feel much less sad, you are love. all this effort put in your videos. i admire and look up to you so much.
Welp
Keep up the fantastic work.
also! at 5:55 john's eyes literally very obviously dart to sherlock's lips
The puzzles, crime-solving and side characters are all great but we all know the real reason this Sherlock is much more beloved and successful than most other adaptations :P
god I miss pre s4 tjlc
Same 😞
absolutely
why did they always bring up romance and lgbt in the interviews and then proceed to produce the shitshow season 4 was? was it really just a cheap gay joke after all?
either they're clowns, or we're clowns, but probably both. hard not to feel like they were spitting in our mouth
Not that I'm neglecting my homework by watching this video but I should really go and do my homework
OMGGG YES

there’s no heterosexual explanation for any of this
"what is a scene that is the most gay - other than all of them" 😂😂😂
i already love this vid just bc of the title.
30:00 Sherlock Watson - I have tears in my eyes
Aww you didn't mention that the "heart" Moriarty tries to burn is John in the bonfire???? That's significant??
My mum has never seen an episode of Sherlock all of the way through and even she's calling Johnlock after seeing bits of it.
at 25:11 at the Watson's house when john walks in front of the camera on the right you can see his hand is twitching again.
The viewer count on this series is going to triple after s4 airs.
MoogieSRO rip
Yup. Of all the things I expected to happen, them tanking their own show was... not one of them. Oh well.
I am so much in love with your bookshelf and book collections🙈🙈🙈
At 13:14 you called Jeanette "Janine", which is surprisingly appropriate, given both are irrelevant 'girlfriends'
"I'd say he's heart broken. But he's Sherlock. He does all of that anyway."
It's so OBVIOUS. Why don't people see!!
I mean... if a woman and a man were acting like THAT with each other on a tv show it would be nearly impossible for them to be seen as friends, you take only one of this situations and change the sex of one of the protagonists and you have a big fandom no question asked even though just one scene isn't quite enough to prove they're lovers.
Okay, EVERYONE needs to see this.
what a beautiful way to start the weekend
Because Sherlock doesn’t have any friends or anyone that sticks around for too long or anyone that understands him. This has never bothered Sherlock until he met someone like John who he thinks of as a friend. Every time John has a date or girlfriend Sherlock feels like he’s being replaced and that John won’t have anymore time to spend with. Sherlock was confused and lost because he’s never had a friend so he didn’t know how to react.
Sherlock might me bad with humans and interpreting their emotions..but he is also one of the smartest and most observant people ever
So let me ask you: if the most observant man alive thinks that you're flirting with him..don't you think you might me flirting with him?
Another thing is that Sherlock is obsessed with being right and he corrects everyone and everything (even the TV), yet he never attempted to correct anyone about him and John dating.
Yes to it all! I'm going to begin placing bets with people who don't believe in Johnlock. Also, at around 13:15, it's *Jeanette, not Janine :)
“Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.”
:)
I just read the entirety of the Mofftiss sexual-identity post-SDCC interview and now I am sad again, and so I need to re-watch all your videos :'(
I've learned to avoid watching or reading interviews, maybe after the run of the show finishes, we'll get something honest out of them. Till then, stick to these vids and the show, and fic!
His heart literally BEATS for John Watson.
in the past days we had a discussion on a page talking explicitly about this I'M IN LOVE
I was just going to sleep and this popped. Fuq sleeping i am going to watch this 😍 i really love you and your videos rebekah 😊💕
Ahahahahah that last scene 😂😂 i am deaded
I feel like when they finally get together there's gonna b loads of footage that they show of previous scenes but with added bits, like the grave speech will be shown with "I love you" at the end as well as a bit that's always been there but we didn't know about it!! Can't wait for the three garridebs ep
Fire exposes our priorities... like gun fire! Great video, I cannot believe this much gets past casual viewers!
Bless you for this! Exactly what my fragile doubting heart needed in anticipation of the final problem.
I LOVE YOU SOOO MUCH THANK YOU FOR KEEPING JOHNLOCK ALIVE
So, I dont have a tumblr account or anything, so I'll just say what i think here. Season 4 so far seems to be markeded like an action movie, full of thrilling dark scenes. (I do think its gonna have a lot of action, but i also think its going to be very, very emotional.) So I think they want to keep the casuals close, epecially those who dont want too much emotion. Mofftiss is doing it right, softly, gently, so none of the casuals notice before its "Too late" (And everything explodes into rainbows and kisses and unicorns.) :)
i seriously think their hiding the romance by using that mega-dark super-action, lady-lovin' trailer.
I don't know how the line "I like my doctors to be clean shaven" can be interpreted in any other way but gay
This is a phenomenal Johnlock video. You're amazing 😍
If people say this is bromance, just show them the scene with the vitruvian man. There's no other explanation for that.
"Why, just.... Why??" -everyone
I always thought that Mrs. Hudson assumes that John is sick because he is a bisexual man who grew up in the 80s....she thinks he has HIV/AIDS. :/
Ja. Ja, ich stimme dir voll und ganz zu. Was Sie gerade gesagt haben, ist das, was ich rund um die Uhr denke
I literally clap and giggle when I see the update on your videos. Rebekah, you´re awesome
19:57. Love how “ fire exposes our priorities” and Sherlock is rescuing John more than his own wife and johns focus is not on Mary, she’s blurry, but only on Sherlocks face.
I wasn't looking for answers but I still found them in TJLC.
