      @@teiskovich because it shocks the tree and washes away beneficial fungi. Generally you don't wash roots.

    What happens without the pond baskets? I’ve transplanted multiple junipers and pines into normal little plastic pots and they have been doing fine.
    Does the increased oxygen just increase growth rate? Wish I wouldve thought of that. I’ve been using great soil, a mix of extra fine gravel and bonsai soil and sometimes good mulch with added nitrogen for my trees though, which could explain my success so far.
    Knock on wood they turn out well.

    • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai  5 місяців тому +9

      Hey! Without pond baskets, your junipers and pines can still thrive, as you've experienced, but there are some differences in root development and overall growth that you might notice. Pond baskets are designed to allow more air to reach the roots, which increases oxygen availability. This encourages stronger, more fibrous root growth and can help prevent root rot by promoting better drainage. The increased oxygen can indeed lead to faster growth rates and healthier trees, especially in the early stages of development. In normal plastic pots, roots tend to circle around the inside of the container, which can sometimes lead to root binding.

    Bonsai . The art of keeping a plant on the brink of death

    • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai  2 місяці тому +1

      Hi! 😊 This is a common misconception, In reality, Bonsai are probably the most cared for trees on the planet. Everything we do is to ensure that a tree is at optimal health. Before doing any work like this, the tree must be strong and healthy. We never want to risk a tree dying (especially some that are crazy expensive!)

    I have bunch of adenium that didn't sell and I am thinking about turning them into bonsai. They were braided and some od them died. 🤔

    • @iamshredder3587
      @iamshredder3587 5 місяців тому +1

      Braiding seedings together can be a good way to get a nice thick tapred trunk for bonsai fyi.
      Braid then grow out til the graft togther and form one unteresting trunk. Sometimes with some species you can get interesting jin and shari deadwood from the individual plants in a braid dying off ...accidentally or intentially... and have deadwood thats mouled in as if from one tree and twosing and bending through and around the trunk. Wh7ch can be pretty cool.
      You dont have to braid either but can like plant a group together and tie or pin them together or graft small onto thicker one to thicken trunk or improve nebari or get a branch in a bare spot etc. Even drill a hold through a trunk and thread a seedling throughto come out where tou want a new branch, grow it abit then cut off where inserted and wahlah.
      Anyway lots of options and fun you can have there. I always like to have a binch of young seedlings spare for any bonsai species im working on especially decidious and vrisd leaf stuff.
