12:25 into the video, i did something similar with milk crates, Hey john thatnkyou for being so vagabondish in your gardening ventures, I would not have seen half the stuff you have made vid's on if not for your time, dedication and willingness to help others! I really like that john!
I have motion sickness horrendously, so I got a little dizzy, but not too bad. I can get sick just riding a couple blocks with a friend, so if I can tolerate it, it must be okay! :)
Jon, if you haven't already, come visit the great state of Oregon. here in the Willamette valley the soil is so fertile... your videos have raised my growing spirit and for that i thank you.Happy trails!
That mallow looks amazingly like what is growing in my next door neighbor's back yard. She doesn't have the money to get her yard mowed, so it just goes, but there is so much of this ground cover that looks exactly like what you said was mallow. I need to check it out. I am always trying to grow my own food and I learned how to cook poke salat from my Daddy, who grew up on a farm and loved the stuff. I am disabled and the government allows me a stipend of $15 a month for food stamps, so I am always interested in learning about weeds for free food. I just ate a delicious salad of two bell peppers and a tomato from my garden, but always looking to add to the mix, as with dandelion greens, poke salat, etc. So thank you for the tip on mallow! I'm going to check it out and if it is what it looks like, I will have an abundance of greens to harvest and I'm sure my neighbor would be thrilled to get it out of her yard!
Hi John I have problems with pests in my organic vegetable garden. Can you please send me a link of an older video that might help or give some afvice please. I am still in the learning curve of becoming as successful as you are . Thanks for all your awesome content. I love what you are doing.
Glad I watched your video John, specially the point about leaving your cards on the table. From now on will be canning the leaves from broccoli and cauliflower plants also since we can't eat all the fresh greens we grow in a few months here in northwestern Canada. But we are enjoying a variety of canned greens from kale, pigweed and stinging nettles all winter and adding something new will be a new greens taste experience. Had not thought greens tasted much different from the next one until I started canning them, what a surprise that was. Sure envy that you can eat fresh greens all year:) all the best!
In the youtube settings, there's a "stabilize" feature under "enhancements" that does a very good job of removing any camera shake. We call them "Hog Panels" around here. People use them for livestock pens, hoop houses, very versatile. Sounds like Mallow might be good as a sprout or micro-green.
The yomogi plant is also known as Japanese mugwort. The celtuce lettuce he mentioned is also known as stem lettuce, asparagus lettuce, celery lettuce, or, wosun at Chinese grocery stores.
The selfie stick adds some dimension to your vids, but keep in mind that we know what you look like and you don't need to be in every shot. A lot of youtubes never show the speaker. Great videos, John, keep up the good work!
OKAY SORRY BUT THIS COMMENT IS WORTH IT!!! ☀️🌱NEW MILK CRATE IDEA🍃 for you and your viewers🌿I have not seen this on UA-cam or anywhere but I’m growing on a tinybalcony and I’m using milk crates now (it keeps progressing) ..... you can stack them in a checker pattern and also have some flat against the walls and some poking out towards you and stack them like that! (So they aren’t all straight on top of each other) you can increase growing space and sunlight. .... hopefully that makes sense. I think milk rates are great bc it was free and I’m using somehting that would have just gone into landfill ...and ALSO I lined them so I do t think the plastic is even effecting my soil let alone the plants. 👍🏻
The selfie stick worked well. I prefer tripod but sometimes it limits the view while the ability to move the camera around with the selfie stick gives more perspective to the whole garden.
Thanks for showing off all the variety. Really amazing and I was totally into the crate thing - so glad you discussed the issues in dry climates because that would totally be a problem for me!
The cheapest raised bed for okay soil is what I've done on my channel you pretty much just take that 6 in of loose soil you get after you till and rake that into your raised bed and I've added coffee grounds from a coffee shop and too put back beneficial fungi I raked out the top layer of matter in the woods and shoveled the decayed fungus matter into a bucket and chopped it up making the best compost ever in 10 min and for mulch I just got the top layer of matter pine needles wood chips and leaves from the woods and put that on. You've got to replicate nature!
John I enjoy the content of your videos a lot but if I may offer a suggestion - try filming more of your segments from a "point of view" perspective. This way your viewers are able to see more of the scene you are trying to show as opposed to being distracted by your handsome mug :)
you have made me wanna be a farmer. I have wanted to do off grid living but this really makes the whole thing more complete. I really like your channel and personality and how helpful you are. I do have a question though that is off topic but I have not noticed you using hydroponics, aquaponics, or aeroponics (though if you have I might have missed it as I am new to your channel). is there a reason for planting in soil over the *ponics systems? is it just preference or some other reason? anything against *ponics?
The mallow looks a lot like Miner's lettuce that grows wild near me. I'm in Riverside Co in So Cal at 2K elevation. I've seen it other places too. Is it the same or related plant?
Thanks for wonderful tips. You have aided my gardening! I would love to buy the weed book and seeds you mentioned by Katrina Blair! Could you give us that link, please?
You look nervous with the stick lol I would attach it to backpack or my belt (or my dog lol)or invent something so I didn’t have to hold it haha Were you feeling SLIGHTLY embarrassed with a selfie stick? Hehheh
I think this is the country song lyric you were looking for: "You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, Know when to walk away and know when to run. You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table. There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done." www.lyricsfreak.com/k/kenny+rogers/the+gambler_20077886.html
did you know that tire chips are being used in some "organic" composts and soil? i have just put up two videos about "organic" gardening. i did a lot of research on "organics" and "organic pesticides." links are provided in my description, so that, i can back up my facts.
OCD strikes me. Sir maybe you can arrange the plastic crate on raise bed more neatly…. I agree with the plastic crate … been using beer crate here in my garden… I call my place as "Beer Garden".
And that is not all the $.99 stores are good for... I have purchased, organic cauliflower (huge head), organic Romaine (either leaves or whole, 3 in a pack) other baby kale and spinach ready made salad greens (clean ready to eat, what a nice service) and ripe bananas are always available. Can't beat the price. I totally play the numbers game when it comes to paying for my produce. And I still do well, as I locally source much of my food. When I get back to the earth again... oh, happy day.
Firstly, thank you so much for sharing lots of ideas to make our garden better, Mark!!

very few people can truly rock the selfie-stick. You rocked it dude!
I like your use of the stick, gives life to the video. Your use of the stick is excellent.

Love the selfie stick. To be honest though what ever makes you more comfortable when filming is truly the most important thing.
I have motion sickness horrendously, so I got a little dizzy, but not too bad. I can get sick just riding a couple blocks with a friend, so if I can tolerate it, it must be okay! :)
Awesome talent and effort to make sure that others have better life and health
For a change the stick is working well. The content is the most important. Thank you for the inspiration. Peace...

Grow for it!! Love the show, always great tips along the way.
The stick worked great. Another awesome, helpful video.
these videos are fun and full of information. thanks
Big fan John, Your a Huge inspiration.
Your winter looks like my summer. Your channel makes me want to move.
Honestly, it looks great with the selfie stick.
Interesting crate system...you could even grow mushrooms in the bottom level. I would line each crate with straw.
Yes, I like the selfie stick. It is more comprehensive and keeps our eyes looking. You will feel more at ease with it when you use it more :)
I'm sooo happy you came down to sunny So. Cali♡♡♡♡♡
Hi John

You're in my head ahhh!! :) I have a ton of those from a move and was just thinking the same thing.
John I lived there in that city for 11 years! :) Happy to see you are in sunny cal!
you are doing a great job with the stick. I'm enjoying it.
Good video and like the stick and movement around the garden

I think the selfy stick worked out pretty well.
He needs a girlfriend that is interested in this stuff so he wont need a selfie stick.... jk lol

Thank you! This is all very helpful! I'm growing my first garden!
Yes, you do have too much fun! 😀
Great job on the point of view. I usually do not like selfie sticks or go pros but this one wasn't bad!
The yomogi plant is also known as Japanese mugwort. The celtuce lettuce he mentioned is also known as stem lettuce, asparagus lettuce, celery lettuce, or, wosun at Chinese grocery stores.
the selfie stick is working out good. with a little more use you will have it mastered! regardless i always enjoy your videos.

I’m like you.. I could never just sit at a Hotel. Too much to explore! At least she is okay with you going and doing your own thang!’ 👌🏻😋
You did a great job with the selfie stick. I like you can move the camera with you more.

Please don't do too much POV. It makes me motion sick and I know others who get sick and can't watch "found footage" type movies.
Awesome!
Is it possible to grow oak snowman spinach or longevity in zone 7
