The Buried Ships in San Francisco, with Richard Everett - SFHS February 2022 Program

For decades, San Francisco was the biggest, bawdiest, and roughest port in the entire West. When the Gold Rush began, almost a thousand ships from all over the world came to San Francisco. Many of them burned in the infamous 1851 fire, leaving their hulls and cargoes to be buried by the sand hills of the early city. Richard tells the story of the past 40 years of these ships being unearthed, and shares images and rare photos. He shares stories about these ships and their cargoes.
Richard Everett is the former curator of exhibits at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. He produced museum exhibits there for 38 years, authored numerous articles, and collaborated on film documentaries related to West Coast maritime history.

Excellent video and presentation. All the times I’ve been to San Francisco and walked around those areas not knowing that I possibly could’ve walked over a sunken old gold or whaling ship. Absolutely amazing to know now that I probably did at one time or another. PLEASE keep up your AMAZING work of finding and excavating these pieces of history. 🙂

I recall decades ago near the Embarcadero Center buildings during site preparation for a new building one of the Gold Rush ships was uncovered.
