Really glad to hear you read one of my favorite short stories. The battle with postpartum depression, her deteriorating mental health while nobody else takes it seriously, really breaks my heart.
I first read this in a literature class where the teacher insisted on interpreting it literally. It was infuriating to me, because the more I looked into it, the more obvious it became that the author was writing a dramatized version of struggles with post partum depression that she likely either experienced or witnessed. At the time, post partum depression wasn't understood at all. Enforced isolation and bed rest was a common "treatment" for it. Isolation like that, especially while dealing with post partum depression, can absolutely lead to psychosis.
Typically I dislike audiobooks, the reader/actor isn’t chosen for being good at the task and doesn’t ever seem to understand or care what they’re reading. Always at some point I just have to turn it off. But you are amazing! You preserve the sense of the story so perfectly, and the emotional tone. Story after story. It all comes across just right and I never once regret that I’m listening to you and not just reading the short story myself. Top tier performance, keep them coming!
Agreed. I've only found a few audiobooks in which I've enjoyed the reader. The way Kristian reads these tales is very engaging, and has actually made me think of how I read stories to my son. He doesn't put on any overly exaggerated voices for any characters or make them sound emotionless and flat, and the pacing and atmosphere are all utilized well.
Fun fact: "Hysteria" was thought of as a woman only illness, for quite a long time, and when doctors saw soldiers exhibiting the same sympotms after WWI, and to not humiliate them by giving them the same diagnosis as women, they called it "shell shock". And jsyk hysteria is no longer acceptable as a medical diagnosis
Such a good story about her struggle of postpartum depression. Having anxiety and depression myself, it really resonates with me hearing her struggles, knowing that (though i believe treatment for postpartum depression is different) everything that her husband is doing for her is the wrong thing. Isolating, not being creative, napping so much, its all so reminiscent of someone spiraling further and further.
Love your work 👊 The sound of your voice is so pleasant, I could listen for hours. I can't pinpoint the origin of your accent, and enjoy trying to work it out by listening. I love a good mystery 😁 Thanks for all the great work you do, much appreciated.
I read this story on my own time in high school. It really stuck with me, and I had all my friends read it too. It has haunted me ever since. I love it.
You have an excellent voice for reading, it makes listening to these stories a pleasure! I hope you continue making these, I've been enjoying them immensely
Strange story of insanity growing inside the mind. Not sure I liked it much. The ending lacked of any conclusive emotion, though gruesome hanging herself by standing on the bed and joining many others hidden in the wallpaper patterns.
