This is a random question, but could all this advice help people who wanna work on comics and video games (video games with a story, like RPG games, for example)?

    • @mileidyclass
      @mileidyclass 3 роки тому

Also, what you said about the other perspectives and getting other people to help you with the story and characters is definitely something that I always wanted to do and currently am doing, kind of.
For reference, I have a 2D (sprites, like 16-bit) RPG video game idea that I talk to a close online friend of mine with a lot. I've also talked about it a bit with a few other people, but I've discussed my ideas with him the most. However, I still wanna get other people to help me with the game, mainly Native Americans, or indigenous peoples of the Americas (including the Caribbean), since a large majority of game's main cast consists of people of those ethnicities and cultures. (2 of them are of indigenous ethnicities/cultures that my friend and I are descended from though; there's a Taíno character and a Mayan character, and since I'm Puerto Rican, I have Taíno ancestry and you can even see some of it in me, and my friend is half-Mexican half-Cuban, and on his Mexican side he is of Mayan descent, and he could also be a Taíno descendant since he's half-Cuban, but I'm not entirely sure though).
I'm not currently working on the game itself yet though, right now it's just in the ideas and concept art phase. I'm probably not gonna be working on it for a long time though, since I need to learn to program first.
On Discord, I'm on a server where me, my friend and our other mutual friends and acquaintances where we share our ideas for stuff and show concept art, stuff like that. I feel like this could help us a lot in the long run, though a huge issue I have is I'm very shy when it comes to my ideas, mainly because I'm scared of people ridiculing me for them. I'm open to advice related to this, if you wanna give me it. (By the way, I'm Autistic myself, since I also have Asperger's.)

    Two elements here:
On the first, as an autistic creator, I legit just took 6 years off bc I had to deal with some things and my mental health wouldn't let me work in the way I need to to get projects going. There's no shame in that, and it's unfortunate that I think a lot of people put their value in themselves as creators to the point where they would see that as a value judgement to take the time you need.
On the second, I tell literally everyone who is going into storytelling this, and it bears repeating again and again: ideas are not worth shit. Ideas come, ideas go...the only point of an idea is to find one or ones that *you* like a lot, bc you are going to spend time working on it, so you should work on ones that bring you joy to work on. But there is nothing inherently good or amazing about any particular idea. The entirety of if a work is good or not comes down to the execution of it all. That's why you shouldn't be precious about things, because that gets in the way of creating.

    • @sunettas9738
      @sunettas9738 3 роки тому +26

That's really good advice, especially the last bit. I tend to get bogged down by ideas, reinventing and revising them in my head without getting any work done. I find that it's easier to make something you're proud of when you just do it, even if it doesn't turn out the way you originally imagined it.

I listened to Bad Book Club, a podcast hosted by people were unaware of Enter, and were not familiar with cartoons, they felt that many of the jokes in the novel simply didn't work, because of the format. I think rather than writing a book I think that Growing Around would work better as one of those graphic novels that you see in Schoolastic Bookfairs and elementary schools. When I'm writing, I have to translate the images in my mind's eye into words. A lot of the flatness of enter's writing comes off like he's doing that without being aware he's an issue, compounded by the fact that Enter thinks reading more would be bad for his writing, so he's stuck trying to fit the round peg of the medium he's familiar with and what comes naturally to him in the square hole of the medium he can access

Or you save it to perhaps be used in a different project in the future, if it turns out to fit.

I honestly like the modified versions a bit better, though I do admit, I miss the fairy's video game obsession.
Heck, now that I think about it, I've re-imagined and incorporated a lot of characters from scrapped projects... and now that I've typed that out, I realize that I may have *too many* characters, even though the overall plan is to have multiple groups of characters with their own stories...
Crap. Now I'm not sure how to go forward with it.

A lot of what you say here really speaks to me, mostly because, yeah, when I write a story I'm passionate about, I always come up with all sorts of ideas in advance. But then there's always a point where I think 'does that idea I came up with actually work here?' And if it doesn't, I come up with something else that does fit with what I've written up to that point. This has resulted in me repeatedly relying on tropes that I'm not usually the biggest fan of, and it's made me realize why said tropes are so common, because so often, many of my stories just couldn't work without me relying on them. Oftentimes when I actually do go against usual clichés, I end up regretting it later.
To name a good example of this, there was a story I wrote years ago where, like many a TV show writer, I was initially planning on having the male lead end up with the first female lead he became friends with. You know, the usual placeholder for a romance. Later I introduced a rival for said love interest, but I wound up giving her so much chemistry with the male lead, I ultimately realized pairing those two up made much more sense. And honestly, I'm happy with the direction I took because in hindsight, the initial pairing I had in mind wouldn't have worked nearly as well.
As for the whole 'don't get too precious' step, that instantly made me think of what went down with Star Vs. during its final season, how it was painfully obvious the people behind the show were absolutely certain there would be a fifth season, not knowing Disney has a four season limit for their animated shows. And yeah, this resulted in a clumsily written season with a disappointing conclusion. If they had prepared in advance for the possibility of the show ending after its forth season, it could have been great.

When Toriyama drew out his panels in order to meet with deadlines he had to catch every frame of the action in a way that conveyed the story without going into detail; he also applied the less is more philosophy to his designs, there's a reason Frieza's final form is less detailed then his previous forms and that's because it was 1)easier to draw 2) helped to hide how terrifyingly powerful Frieza was. and then there is the Super Saiyan design, the idea of him having yellow hair was done just so Toriyama's assistant wouldn't have to do so much work inking in Goku's black hair which in the end saved a bunch of time and it ended up being one of the most iconic looks not just in Dragonball but anime as a whole.
Something that gets brought up a lot with the Dragonball Super manga is that Toyotaro (Toriyama's protege) is too busy with his panels, like you guys mentioned in the video regarding how writers should go too far into detail with their world building is similar to the habits Toyotaro has gotten himself into with how he writes out and draws for DBS's Manga, there are too many panels he puts on each page, some that can be trimmed out to better pace the story and some that can be trimmed out because there is to much exposition going on that distracts from the fight taking place.

Almost everything said in this video, I’ve had to learn through struggling as a beginner writer. It’s 10x better to learn this stuff through small one off projects rather than one big passion project. It saves you a lot of heartbreak and helps you come in at your most skilled.
This is a more beginner thing but with simplicity in design, I feel like a lot of people forget about that aspect. With any medium trying to convey character, clarity is key. It’s hard to kind of express traits through a “creative but efficient means” rather than just saying “He’s bold”.

Before watching this, the problem with Growing Around is that there's a lot he could do with the premise that he isn't doing. Like focusing on the adults instead of the kids. Enter doesn't seem like a... very happy guy to say the least. Since the world of Growing Around shares a lot with our world on paper, he could rationalize his own beliefs and struggles through a cartoon that he makes.

    • @TuesdaysArt
      @TuesdaysArt 3 роки тому +2

I feel like he focuses on the kids because that childish wish fulfillment is popular in children's media (which he tends to analyze), though it'd be interesting to see an adult animated show from the adult's perspective. It probably won't be as fun, but at least it'd be something fresh.

I've been working on a comic for a little while now. One that I haven't really shown anyone yet besides close friends. Partly because I'm self conscious about my work and partly because as much as I try to find the best ways to improve upon on my art and the story, I know very little about how I should go about the process of putting it out there into the world. It's about five chapters in and I keep thinking things like:
"I should be further along by now!"
"I can do better, I'm going to go back and fix some stuff" (Even though doing so always takes up a lot of time)
"I have these other ideas that I also want to work on, but I don't want to give up on this."
"How am I going to handle the monster that is actually putting it out there into the world? I don't know about marketing or what's the best way to get this seen!"
I really want to say thank you for this video which has given me a lot to think about in how I go forward.

Good stuff! Thank you for the upload! 💜 ❤️
In regards to Gus's comment on building a very good story around tight sentences, I had a difficult time writing short stories because I didn't want to kill my darlings, and I thought every single thing was important for the audience to know without allowing the story to progress naturally.
Flash fiction or micro fiction helps with that so much. I'm actually a part of this writing Discord server, Tale Foundry, where people can participate in a weekly (barring skipped weeks) writing submission based around a prompt. It's a different prompt every week that it's done, and there are rules for it. Maximum word count is 350. Also, a select amount of stories get chosen to be read on Twitch.
I digress. This particular form has helped immensely. It allows you to trim so much fat and unnecessary filler and padding. It's really good when you want to focus on particular moments rather than an overarching plot. I highly recommend it.

Honestly instead of nursing the same decade-old project forever, I just sorta shelve it and forget about it until I can come back to it, get a fresh perspective on it, and either recycle it into something new, shred it and weave the shreds into a different project, or, rarely, continue working on it if I genuinely believe it can still work (likely while also tossing out a lot of my original work on the project while keeping the more general stuff like the world and core concepts).
Sometimes I'll also just re-shelve it until I can think of something cool to do with it. God knows I've dug up old writing projects from when I was around 13-20 (2009-2016) and gone "huh, that's actually not bad... no idea what I'll do with it but I wanna use this concept at some point".

I needed to hear this today. I'm currently solo writing a video game plot, and very often I get so self conscious over my plot or plot points and elements that I have to ask like my entire friend group and multiple family members if I'm doing it right, and like, I realized after a point that most of the time (around 90%), I was overthinking it. The points I needed criticism were the points I was definitely doing something too obtuse or making something convoluted in a way the player won't understand.
However, very often I get self conscious of how long I have been taking to develop this, and have been comparing my concerning thoughts to Mr. Enter's trajectory, especially since I scrapped MANY ideas about animation prior to this project because I realized that animation isn't my specialty. I'm forced to remember (thank you guys), that I have at least been trying consistently on it. While I'm in the phase where I'm writing the plot and drawing some of the characters on my own, someday I will be able to develop this game with a team I can hire, but I know that I'm not there yet. I still have many skills to learn before I'm ready and many more ambitious bits to work towards, but I can see in just the last year alone that I'm almost done with a whole region despite my health issues getting in the way, and haven't slowed down since.
While my plot document is big and long, I have made it clear for both dialogue, gameplay and visuals and sometimes I have to remember that I have to make it work for everything. Still, I find it comforting knowing that I am actually doing better than I thought as an aspiring indie dev 🥺. Thank you so much guys

Which would then lead to adults finally rebelling, taking over the world, and forcing kids to start living the lives they do in the real world (which, of course, will be portrayed as a complete and utter hell), and Sally will be forever remembered as the person who ruined everything because she tried to make things better instead of just ignoring her problems and waiting for them to go away.

The thing Enter doesn't seem to realize is when you have insanely high standards for what you want in other people's work, other people are gonna start holding you to that same standard. The whole "You can only criticize creators if you've already created things yourself" argument is indeed faulty, but if you're choosing to create things just to prove you can do better than all the people you've criticized, then people are gonna start anticipating you put your money where your mouth is. People like John K and Doug Walker have torn apart other people's work for years, and yet the things they consider flaws in other people's work are very much present in their own stuff. Enter has basically the same problem, as almost everything he insists makes cartoons awful is in Growing Around.

The point was to explore how the girls cope with their first experience of ongoing pain, and the second is flatly wrong. Go-Bots preceded Transformers, and Orbots bore no meaningful resemblance to either.

It's kinda frustrating to be told and many beginners will buck at it but sometimes it has to be done to make a better product. It’s important to not be too precious or obsessive about things, sometimes things are really holding you back, but sometimes something is precious because, whether you consciously realize it or not, it’s important to making it *yours*. A lot of creative writing advice out there is extremely market-oriented, very focused on getting out a slick product, almost possessed of an assembly line nature. But I don’t think even close to all of the noteworthy writers out there really think this way.
Identity doesn’t come from the central thrust of given works or ideas, but from their differences from one another. What to one author might seem frivolous could be the entire goal and driving force for another. Sometimes obsession is reasonable, other times it isn’t. I think the key is figuring out which obsession you’re having.

I have an anxiety disorder as a partial consequence of head trauma. I ended up on lamotrigine (which worked fantastically until it ruined my liver). Now I'm on variety packs of benzodiazapenes at nonsensically low dosages. I didn't have typical reactions to any of those, and my prescription for my symptoms is kinda weird according to my doctors.
Here's the thing, though. If I'd tried just "stopping" my lamotrigine? I could have given myself a stroke. The meds I'm on now, because of their low dosage, are a lot friendlier to going on or off them as needed (which is nice).
DO NOT go off your meds on a whim to see if they improve your writing. You need to check with your doctor before you try something like that.

I think a lot of what you guys said realy encapsulates the problem with Mr Enter and his entire work beyond his own original concepts.
You're both neurodivergent but you have also grown as people, you are self-aware enough to know your own shortcomings and then work around them in order to do your own thing and become better in the process.
Enter by contrast... Hate to say it, but he snowflakes a lot, the whole "I don't do studios or marketing" mentality for instance is a guaranteed one-way ticket to tank your project before it even exists, same goes for the whole writing everything and THEN presenting it, concept art, one shots and pilots exist for a reason, but he sadly managed to delude himself into thinking he can just bypass the entire workload that actually goes into a passion project and pretend it already is a thing...
A little humble pie and accepting his own limitations would go a long way, that stubborness of his is gonna be his undoing.
I am an aspiring writer and a digital artist, and the one thing I learned that really liberated me is accepting my limits and also realize: no matter what happens or how old you get, you never stop learning, you are constantly growing and improving, provided you are willing to take that first step.

I once heard a piece of writing advice for getting over the precious feeling people have over their ideas. Write 100 one page pitches for movies/shows/series/whatever. Come up with an idea, put in enough thought and work for it to fill a full page, then abandon it and move on yo the next. Helps writers really internalize how cheap ideas are, amongst other benefits.

the fact that he wrote over 100 episodes blows my mind like that's an insane amount of effort for a project that hasn't really gone anywhere. i'd understand if he just liked writing scripts and had no real expectation of bringing them to fruition but fuuuuck 100 episodes of a show takes an insane amount of money and time especially without the backing of a major company and the resources they can bring to market and monetize the show

It reminds me of the fanfic writer DarkKingMykan, who has basically written 2 complete series, each over 100 episodes and a few specials. But since he refuses any sort of criticism or attempts at improving, it ends up being just a lot of disturbingly revealing rants rather than anything that could ever hope to be made.

What I find interesting about Enter's approach to Growing Around is that, in the past, he's told Seth MacFarlane to give up on writing comedies, yet has never once applied a similar approach to his absolutely cursed "show".

I mean he's also the same guy who called for Spongebob writers to be 'blacklisted' from the industry for writing a grossout episode, (which lead to the writers getting viciously harassed online) yet he's here glorifying parental abuse and playing it off as 'just'

Honestly? I can somewhat understand the logic behind the whole "I don't wanna scrap something because then I've wasted that work". Yeah, it feels bad to do that - it feels bad to think you work on something and then just scrap it because you feel like it doesnt' work.
But that's part of the creative process.

Asking a writer to write something shorter is more like asking a background artist to draw a house vs a city or a character artist to draw a portrait over an entire character simple as that

I personally love Mr. Enter's content, but I do see that he has flaws he should work on. He gives insightful opinions o a lot of animations and it seems he's really passionate about the artform. He's one of the reasons I started developing an idea for a series I had for a while.

    • @henrygalley2831

One of the big problems with Mr. Enter is that, in a lot of places, he just doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Based on comments he’s made quite recently, he doesn’t seem to understand how animation is actually done these days, his knowledge seems to stop at hand-drawn and cel animation.
In addition to this, he doesn’t really know anything meaningful about writing and storytelling. He’s one of those guys who I think it’s easy to mistake as knowing what he’s talking about cause he has conviction in his ideas, but those ideas just aren’t good. Growing Around is essentially the perfect example of why none of his philosophies work in practice.

honestly his review on a episode of sabrina the which really shows a good few of his flaws as a review he has many good aspiring reviews but then some he went in were it shows he almost immediately lost interest in the review but continued anyway but showed he didn't have the decently to even do a quick google search to get a quick understanding on the characters

@@henrygalley2831 It's so bizarre to me how Enter can be sometimes. Like in one moment he'll be shockingly mature and thoughtful compared to most other youtubers, like in his COPPA video. Then another moment a series of *bafflingly* stupid takes, like with all the COVID denialism.

This is a good video but to come at it from another angle also: sometimes your passion project isn't something you can sell. I don't think there's anything wrong with writing a bunch of scripts for a show without it getting picked up first and refusing to edit any of them so long as you know it almost certainly won't ever become one. That doesn't seem to be the case with Mr. Enter from the context of this video but as someone who is a professional at like two creative skills but a passionate amateur at a hundred it's fine to let your darlings live and put your own ego above overall quality so long as what you intend to get out of the project is the act of creation alone and the usual other important outcomes of others seeing it and getting paid are much less of a consideration if at all.

That's true. And with the accessibility of posting comics, shorts, whatever online there's no reason not to just make a passion project in one's free time and do updates on Twitter, UA-cam, or other fitting platform.

“Don’t be precious with it!” This! This exactly, I personally was forced to not be precious with my passion project after having three arcs planned out (paragraphs and bullet point) and lost it all when my phone’s logics chip died in my phone. They couldn’t get it to boot nor would it allow me to back it up, so now I’m slowly rewriting and I’ve found that I’ve ended up scrapping so much of the points in the book that I used to adore.

I've had this idea for an original D&D campaign/novel idea for years now. I spent months furiously writing any thoughts that came to mind for it and two phones worth of fully written paragraphs of ideas.
Just a couple months ago, I scrapped almost all of it and started over again. It feels liberating to throw away work and start from scratch in a way.
