ian is so right…his fans will defend anything he does when they really shouldn’t
I mean it’s just a show a fictional character you do know most of them would act completely different if Damon was real
Why not? It's a vampire show, not a nun and saint show. You watch it for the gore, the violence and sex, the dark. Goody goody moral characters have no place in a vampire show and if you expect that, you are watching the wrong genre or the shitty Twilights. Having say that a great redemption arc of a character that is presente bad and is actually not more complex than that, that has motivations,depth, very long troubled complicated life, makes it interesting to watch and easy to relate to the vulnerability shown and to the fact that a bad guy turned into good for the love, of a woman or friends, or a brother is a hit with audiences and has a very emotional impact. There are out there, fortunatelly, more good people, that are ready to show compassion and forgiveness and that can relate to the issues presented by that specific character, as he explained, then little toxic problematic crazy people, ready to vomit hate, projecting their problem on a fictional character, because are problematic people, don't have compassion and cannot relate to others and hate everything that they think is different from what they know. So actualy what that says, it a good thing, there are out there lots more good people full of kindness and compassion, then bad people full of spite and hate ready to express it. Damon character brings out hate and negative feelings only on people that have those feelings inside. The normal people understand that this is a fictional character, in a vampire show, and love it because it's utterly entertaining an have lots of fun with it and is showing that trope that we all love, the though and rough, bad ass guy with deep inside a soft wounded heart. The Vampire Diaries is mainly the story of the two brothers finding redemption in the love for one another. There is no redemption arc if don't have anything from which you have to redeem from.
@@Patricia7561 Yes!! I have been saying the same thing for such a long time. If Damon was a real character, everyone would be terrified. But it’s a show about vampires which means there will be blood and violence. The same when I hear that Klaroline and Delena were toxic. So what? It’s a show to watch not actual couples. People need to differentiate between reality and a fictional show. Just enjoy it and if it’s too much for you, don’t watch. It is that simple.
@@karolinastachowiak1629 Exactly. It's a fantasy show, in a universe with different rules from reality. That doesn't mean that by using allegories you cannot talk about very real things, or make by exageration analogy with real problems or by putting the characters in extreme situation, you cannot make some phylosophical point, or raise some though provoking questions or generate some strong emotional respond that are very real. With the entertainment side, there is depth in this show, if you want to see it. It is great plus and makes the show a classic, rewatchable, that can be enjoyed over and over again and
still be fresh, and be discover by a whole new generation and still be as much loved as it was when it aired. That is why we still talk about it and I guess in the future too.
@@Patricia7561 Very true. I just can’t stand people complaining. Just by the title, they should know it would be a violent show with villains doing horrible things. I love anything about vampires so I don’t get bothered. But I feel like people instead of switching to something they would enjoy more, they just prefer to annoy others with their complaints. In real world we don’t want people like Damon or Klaus. But watching them on the screen is fun in my opinion 😊

to be honest i thought the interview was so awkward at times with many awkward silent moments because the host was just sitting there absolutely unengaged and passive and not saying anything.

I thought the series would have fallen when Nina left but I really must say that when Chris Wood showed up, it actually made the series even more wonderful to watch! Chris is a darn good actor & being able to be mean while doing it with humor was powerful! I am not a younger person who has watch TVD over & over again but I really love watching each character and how they play their roll. I am so happy to say that TVD is an outstanding series and wish everyone of the actors, writers, producers, and directors of this show a lot of credit for holding it together for so many years. One word BRAVO everyone!

Ratings wise it did fall when Nina left. Also, Nina was there when Chris was introduced.
Chris came in season 6 and she was still there, she left in the end of the season and the character Kai went too both Nina and Chris came back season 8 in the end.
I absolutely agree with u Phyllis, this show delivered high quality content, so emotional and deep. I absolutely love it and agree that whole team did an amazing job. After watching this discussion series I understand better how much time, work and energy was invested to produce tvd by every single crew member. Amazing job 👏👏👏
@@Hi-cq2hm TVD was already contracted for 6 seasons to after the first season. The ratings dropped AFTER Nina left in season 6, so the ratings were still high and so a season 7 was renewed, which then Ian and Kat (Damon and Bonnie) said season 8 would be their last season before leaving, so with the ratings dropping as well as the key characters leaving it wasn't continued. The originals was hugely successful for the first 2 seasons, but then ratings dropped as most fans said it became predictable after that, which is why season 4 and 5 only have 13 episodes as opposed to 22.

It's really too bad that Ian and Nina can't get together just one hour to do one of these. It's odd to just ignore the Damon and Elena story with the impact it had for 6 seasons.
Yeah, Ians wife Nikki is very weird about him and Nina.. and also Ian I think is a little uncomfortable with the Delena fan base because they bullied Nikki, so I just think he doesn't really want to touch on it to excite the Delena fans and open doors for more comments about Nikki.
But I agree, very strange and I think they should put it aside also and realize that their relationship is one of the biggest factors of this show and the reason they're able to even make this video today.

I gotta dock points for not having Stefan sing in the karaoke episode. They've mentioned a few times how he loves Bon Jovi, so hearing him do a bland emotionless cover of "Dead Or Alive" would've been hilarious

You can tell Ian genuinely loved TVD and the experience he had with everyone despite any issues there may have been. I feel like Nina and Paul could take it or leave it. I think its admirable how Ian is so appreciative of a show that made such a huge impact.
Oh I think Paul enjoyed it even if he thinks some of the writing wasn't great. He seems pretty fond of the experience for the most part.

I always have been a bit confused why Damon looks so shocked at Kai when Kai confesses he murdered his family. When Damon himself confesses earlier he killed a pregnant lady and a bunch of other people in the 90’s

I wish the last Damon/Elena scene was covered in this, the dance and how that scene was created. Good episode but it went off on a tangent compared to other season recaps. Elena compelling away memories of Damon was a chunk of the season. Also forgotten was Elena and the cure! I understand talking about an ex Ian has to be careful, but that was a big departure. She was there 6 seasons!
@@Hi-cq2hm ian did mention elena couple times but only when he was dragging down the early season damon and talking about fan behaviour? Hardly in the context of s6. Nina's segment ended up being more about Katherine and Stefan and acting in general (which I liked). So, no scope for damon mention I think. I don't see anything sinister or fearful there.

As a writer, that is EXACTLY where I would have gone. I had never seen a greater opportunity to redeem a seemingly irredeemable character than the merge. And it would have been way more interesting than him just going back to being evil like they did.
A sociopath with a soul would been like when Spike and Angel get souls on Buffy and it would have worked SSOOO well with Kai!!

Making Kai this evil irredeemable psychopath was so hypocritical, everyone else in the show has done things just as bad yet eventually they're all forgiven? We all know it's because julie plec hated bonnie and did everything to ensure she won't have her happy ending. And eventually she did. Kai 100% deserved redemption

Ohhhh When Kai shows up at the store I was in awww of him. I had such a feeling that he was going to be bad bad news and it had to be bigger than a original.
One of the best episodes of this series so far!!! Loved hearing them talk more about what it was like behind the scenes as actors and that as the show grew, their crew got to upskill too!
Watching Chris Wood Makes My Day
I just kept thinking while watching this, "When this interview is over, he can go kiss his lovely wife and adorable baby boy" Honestly such a perfect couple/family
Chris Wood is incredibly talented and skilled. He is a fantastic singer and has one of the best voices I have ever heard. Disney needs to hire him and Melissa to do a live action film for Tangled. ❤
No deep dives in the idea of Bonkai? Bamon? Is Julie going to pretend we didn't notice the writers' attempt to redeem Kai after the merge? They literally turn him into a puppy who begs Bonnie to forgive him and who sticks his tongue out to catch some snow. The evidence is there.
Julie literally said Kai was supposed to be irrevocably psychopathic, so any hint of redemption that fans may have read was merely a deluded hope. Him begging may very well be a ploy, and you really want Bonnie to forgive her abuser just because he has puppy dog eyes? Just like how fans forgot the whole Caroline-Damon abuse?
And she said in previous episode that Bamon's love was platonic and their friendship was more important than any romantic implication.

I think Julie talked about Bonkai enough to understand what was her intention about his persona.
Although I enjoyed the episode, this one missed so much about Season 6! Bonnie's amazing arc during the season, Elena having her good memories of Damon removed but falling in love with him again, Stefan and Caroline falling in love, the Gemini coven which carries over into Legacies now with Lizzie and Josie, Damon and Stefan's mom is alive which leads to season 7, Tyler and Matt stuff, Alaric is human again, Elena's future profession etc. Season 6 was a return to TVD form in my opinion but only a slice of it was talked about. :(
Thats because loves to talk so much. 😊. And I love to listen&watch Ian... But its only 50 mins and seriously the guests took over&went on tangents leaving no time for the moderator to to ask important questions.

I don't hear hatred coming out of Ian's mouth, the opposite actually. He was fascinated by the fact that Damon was so loved despite the things he did. How people's minds work etc etc. He loves Damon just like we all do. He loved portraying him. He loved all of it.

I think it's funnier for Chris Wood to act like this was the very first time he heard about the Bonkai ship or that some fans shipped Bonnie and Kai together. I mean what is up with that?
@@tracysimms8701 Yeah, I thought so too. It's been brought up in interviews many times and both Kat and Chris tweeted about it in the early days, so why the faux surprise? Chris comes across as being sycophantic to Julie, he probably doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds him. Anyway the Bonkai fan vids still being made years after the series ended is testament to the potential pairing's popularity. As for TVD seasons 7 and 8, the abysmal ratings speak for themselves. 📽👍
@@LL-os8ms Yeah, he has done interviews where he has talked about Bonkai or Bonnie and Kai's interactions before. And at times he has acknowledged the Bonkai fandom and claims that he ships them or supports the idea of Bonkai together. So' I'm wondering why he felt the need to act like he never heard about them before. Even though this isn't the first time he sort of questioned why people ship Bonnie with Kai. The show has been over with for years, so I'm not sure the exact motive or reason would be to act surprised about people shipping Bonkai. Ian's reaction I can understand more, since Bonkai fans wouldn't interact with him much or since he wouldn't follow a ship his character isn't involved in.
@@LL-os8ms There were also rumors going around about him and Nina dating. And rumors about him dating or being interested in multiple other women co stars, including Kat. Some people claimed that him and Kat had a "thing" but she shut down those rumors on twitter and said that her and Chris were just friends. Even though it's possible he may have had a crush on her at the time. Kat has chemistry with almost all of the TVD actors. But JP loved to downplay Bonnie's desirability, even though multiple TVD actors ship or support their characters with Bonnie.

It really would have been nice if they discussed Damon and Elena, Elena getting compelled, them falling in love again, her taking the cure, the final dance and just how emotional that episode was.
I get that what happened between Nina and Ian was unfortunate but I wish they were professional enough to give us that conversation.
Liz's death was 100% based on buffy even the way Julie explained the rationale and the inspo she drew from buffy; i mean they even gave her cancer
I've watched season 1 thru 6 of the this 'podcast' and Julie mentions in almost every single episode that Buffy is one of her fav shows (and Angel) and a major inspiration for so many of her ideas&scripts for TVD.

When he says “don’t leave the mothership” he’s talking about Nina, but they burnt her out with all the different roles she had to perform - which, while awesome for her career, wasn’t what she signed up for.
I felt that about the line in the 9/10 min mark too - 'idc how tired you are or over it....being grateful when you're part of a hit tv show' etc etc. Seemed like a pot shot at Nina's (and Paul's) segment where she/they spoke about being exhausted (not so much against Paul I'm sure lol). of course, I could be imagining it all. anyway, true, she gave her all and more for 6 years.
yeah clearly Nina carried a chunk of the show with her Elena/Katherine. The Stefan-Damon conflict wouldn't have had the lasting impact without Nina's performance. She did her job, no one should hate her for that
@@annushankar3032 I agree. I def don't hate her, but I do think it was dumb to leave the show at that point. And where did it get her? Granted I no longer follow Hollywoods every move but Idk of anything she's actually doing-aside fromthe wine her and her bf Julianna Hough have produced.
@@ShikhaJohn shes the only person who left the show by choice so I agree. I dont think she carried the show all by herself but being multiple characters is exhausting. And she did far more of that than any other actor on the show.

Man, i can probably write an entire book on why Kai deserved better. He had every reason to turn out the way he did, i feel like everyone always skips over the fact that he had a truly awful upbrining and ended up spending most of his life in prison worlds (and hell). I don't know why they decided that he, out of every other murderer in the show, doesn't deserve redemption or forgiveness. Maybe if Elena had fallen in love with him they would've found a way to justify his actions, cause that's always how it goes.
Honestly! That's what pisses me off the most. They really drove into the viewers deep that Kai had a horrendous upbringing. That he was ignored and no one ever gave him a hug because of his abilities. So imagine, growing up as a baby/young child and not being nurtured properly. Then to put icing on the cake, he learns that his siblings got more love than him/normal amounts of love AND that his parents kept having even more kids to show love to(that Kai wasn't even receiving) until they got another set of twins. Its honestly a slap in the face from a psychological standpoint that the writers would think that it was just "Eh he was born bad." No child is 100% born bad. That whole nurture vs nature thing. Kai lacked nurturing and its shocking with how many kids his parents had, he was the only "deformed" one? Really? Not likely genetically speaking.
Then to top it off after the merge, Kai started to change as a person/human and they sunk that when they got the feedback of fans seeing the redemption arc. Its like Luke's personality all but "disappeared" from the merge from earlier seasons

There was obvious chemistry between Kai and Bonnie (even Chris Wood acknowledged it) and his character arc was going in such a good direction after the merge. And then Bonnie just had to strand him in 1903 and that stunted his growth. I understand why she didn't trust him but I honestly think it was partly because of Julie Plec's feelings towards Bonnie. That moment could've been a turning point for his character. Idk why they deleted that scene between Jo and Kai after the merge, we never really got to hear his POV on things but I guess that would've made the viewer wayyyy too sympathetic towards him and we don't want that !!! !!
@@ash3043 Absolutely! I loved him simply because I understood how he ended up that way... I suffered domestic abuse at the hands of my mom and sister and it messed me up. My favorite line of Kai is when he says that "when your family decides that you're an irredeemable piece of trash, guess there's nothing left to do but to prove them right" because I get that! I used to think that way and acted out manipulating people and just proving to everyone that I could be ten times worse than they thought I could be. It made me feel powerful in a completely helpless situation. I'm glad I got out cause I am doing so much better now thanks to Melissa Benoist's story. Which by the way, makes me love Chris Wood even more. He's so good for her and I think she is just the most unique, beautiful, strong woman ever! She inspires me in that, you don't have to change your smile and your joy simply because someone mistreated you.
@@ash3043plec hated bonnie character that's the only reason kai gets this irredeemable label over everyone else she has this childish Attitude about bonkai shippers and really hates that kai was written to be all about bonnie she didn't have much Influence in the early stages of s6 because she was doing the originals or something at the time

when Ian was talking about dont leave the mother ship i thought about Nina; personally i dont think you should quit something if you are in it well enough if you're gonna go then do it in the beginning bc it is that much harder... but i understand even before these podcasts nina needed to leave for herself; i love the family bond of the this group which is why i think we all love this cast and show so much; paul and Ian's episodes are really good i think they owned the show in s7 and s8.

6 years is a very long time to do the same TV show playing the same character. She would've been around 30 by the time the show was done (if she stayed on) which means her entire youth would've been spent playing Elena. She wanted to do bigger, better things and she's very strong and mature for having the courage to leave the show. I don't think she owed it to anyone (including the fans) to stay on the show. Personally I think they should've ended the show after 5 or 6 seasons--by season 5 the writers were just dragging the story out and making things up. I felt everything that needed to be told was told by the end of season 4.

I haven’t watched many interviews of Ian Somerhalder but he is so well spoken, so wholesome and warm, and you can tell that he loved his time on Vampire Diaries!
It must be amazing to work in a team with Paul and Ian. One is funny and a bit of an asshole(with all love in my heart to Paul😂) and the other is such a supportive nice person. They both give off that vibe.

Chris was an extremely impactful character, just a bit shorter amount of time given to him in this show. That’s probably why he didn’t speak much in some bits. All is well. Take care of you all

I’m glad Ian brought all that up about delena. It’s super sad that Stefan gets hated for basically breathing and saving everyone but Damon can get defended for everything. I love both brothers but omg. Some of the delena fans are absolutely annoying.

It's not like damon was the only evil in the show that ppl always find way to defend his actions klaus & stefan & even kai and enzo all of them have fans who always say something to defend them , and ian saying how ppl still defend damon is not a hate it's just the way it is . he is kinda right but we all know how bad they are all but still we love them as a character not a real person and nothing wrong about that ppl watch it for fun not for lessons in our life if i wanted that i would go read some books not watch dark fantasy show .
yes we know that the characters in tvd are bad people, but we are not talking about any of those characters, he is holding damon accountable for his actions, he is right period, damon needs held a lot more accountable for his actions than he actually is.
