I am starting on Amtrak next week as a signal apprentice. It helped that I was a veteran but also that I was myself in the interview and I studied up on signals the day before the interview! I will admit to being a bit of a rail fan but I think it gave me a step up as I knew what the job was going in!
gregrocks66 I didn't have ANY electrical background when BNSF hired me to be a Signal Apprentice and after I finish the schooling they put us through then I can become a Signal Maintainer. Keep applying.
+Joe Dohn Electrical background is super helpful. I did a year in electrical engineering school, one of those accelerated vocational programs. They teach you everything you need to know. Small investment in an otherwise well paying career, especially if it's unionized and has a state funded pension. I wish I was told this stuff when I got out of highschool, my old-school family was like, "Get a job at the supermarket and do good there and you'll be fine." LOL
Joe Dohn Yeah, I've noticed for some strange reason there are many puns related to the rails. Ha ha! I also applied for engineer but I got called in for the signal maintainer test, my electro-mechanical background probably had something to do with that. Oh well, at this point anything pays better than what I'm making now which is $0. To be honest I graduated from vocational school like in 2002, a lot of that stuff I forgot, one thing you never forget is Ohm's Law, and it's like the easiet formula to remember from the crap load of formulas they teach you. It's probably the most essential. Oh, and P=I×V, lots of things are rated in Watts so you need to know that one too.

I just passed a signal maintainer test for NJ Transit. Doesn't look like a soul-crushing job. I've had soul-crushing jobs in the past, household goods mover was probably the worst, it's like boot camp, up at 6am, work till the job gets done, walk up and down stairs with sofas and armoires all day. Box truck is about 115 degrees F in the summer time.
Dame Murray I had taken an electrical engineering course at a local technical school, it ran about a year, 13 months maybe. And I have taken automotive engineering courses as well.
I'm 19 years old and I would love to work for you guys I'm kinda fresh out of high school and I just want to be able to support myself and my family with a good paying job that has benefits and ever since I was little I had interests in trains. :)
Do signal maintainers travel a lot? I had an apprenticeship opportunity but I didn't take it yet because I'm not so sure what being a maintainer is like. I have some experience in train crew and switching on a volunteer railroad, but none with signals. Any help/info/advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

@cheryl Guevara
Key phrases, "my father", "my grandfather"....that's basically what you need to get a job with the RR.
Yep I always use my father/uncle's/grandfather's...etc. And preach safety and military experience if any.
Connections help with everything. Dont get discouraged.

Also I heard you have to paint signals so if you don’t like that idea then..
I'd like to know sometime hear a bell ringing on train when it's moving slowly why or what it for? Thank you.
In UK signals points go wrong all the time. Track Ciruits are not something that terrorists must know about.
Something I always wanted to do, but I do not have any connections, nor skills that electricians have to get in

Jess Whallon normally you are on call every other week. so that way you have a weekend off 2x a month for sure.
