- Scott ToyGuru Neitlich reviews how the Masters of the Universe Classics toy line attempted to streamline and use all of the various (often conflicting!) story-lines from past MOTU content to create a definitive origin for He-Man's Power Sword. Where it came from, how it works, and why it tastes like chicken.
I've been a MOTU fan practically all my life, yet watching your videos have given me a completely new level of appreciation of the IP. Thank you for these incredible videos.
I am so glad to hear! Any help sharing these videos is so appreciated
The incorporation of all the stories and inclusion of new stuff was the biggest draw for me with the classics line. As a kid, I hated that the She-Ra figures looked diffent from the He-Man figures. The cartoons worked together, but the toys didn't! That drove me up the wall lol. Classics did a pretty darn good job of making the toy lines into one real universe and I absolutely loved that. Hopefully this new line of figures does the same or at least close to it 🤞. Thanks for the retelling of the power sword story.
Glad you enjoyed. And I am also looking forward to what Mattel does.
@@spectorcreative1872 Hey how does She-Ra's Sword Fit in here?
@@ravoniesravenshir3926 from what I recall, there are two stories to She-Ra's Sword. The first is Filmation's where the two swords were forged at the same time and both resonate with the different powers and magics held in Grayskull.
The second (and one I like most) is that the Sword of Protection is a sword forged by King Grayskull after coming into the possession of a magic stone. He wanted Veena to have a sword that was comparable to his, but she didn't want it as she is a magician. So he, instead, Intended it to be for his greatest warrior, bodyguard and champion that would fight for the Kingdom of Grayskull when he could not. Ine that would defend the peace, the strength and the honor of Grayskull.
out of everything in masters i loved the sience and mystic part of it
Having those two themes come together really does set MOTU apart.
Fun video! Thank you! I just finished that "Masters of the Multiverse" comics omnibus, and it was a blast.
Tim did a great job with that comic!
Would love a full breakdown of Skeletor as to his magick and skills via the serious, was actually a threat to He Man, version.
I'll get to that too!
I love that when i was a kid, i also had a mystical orb on a pedestal in my Castle Grayskull, back in the 80s. Mine was a sparkly oversize green high bounce ball that set on top of the bottom part of the training spinner. The images in this video are SO close to that.
Thats amazing... It is always cool to see someone try and make sense of something that at first glance makes no sense...
Also, if this is the origins of the Sword of Power, whats the Origins of the Sword of Protection?
I'll get to that in a follow up video soon!
THIS is the video I needed! I owe thanks to our mutual friend Adam (from GoFigure) as he told me to search this video for information.
Very informative video, Scott! Now i gotta look up how Dare fits into the lineage for my own curiosity 🙈
So glad you liked! Any suggestions for topics are always welcome
Great video ToyGuru. It cleared up some thing I was confused about in The Classics storyline.
So glad to! And more is coming
Fun video, I really enjoy stuff like this. Looking forward to the sword of protection video. I've always had in my head Canon that the gem in that one is the one from he-ro's staff.
More videos in this vein are coming!
It's magic, we don't need to over think it.
Well yeah, everything is magic
@@spectorcreative1872 Great answer! It's great to acknowledge that magick(as a noun) is at the root of all existence. Science is merely a way to describe and interact with that energy. The practice of magick(druidect in my ancestors tongue) is the oldest known way to consciously interact with that core energy or creative force. 🙏🏼 Love your videos!
Love your videos Scott. Thanks for entertaining and educating. Your channel is becoming one of my favorites.
I am so glad. Suggestions for topics are always welcome
I don’t envy you. That was a task trying to merge everything into one universe.
It did take a while but a labor of love!
I can dig this story. Love it. Always wanted to know more details as a kid watching the filmation toon
More like this coming soon!
Nice, love how this ties everything together. Really have to show this to the guys at the comic shop.
Please do! More like it are coming.
I like the name The Sword of He which was made for Classic version.
Thank you! It really did "fit".
I remember that as a kid, I found it funny that a kind of “technologically advanced” prince became a primitive barbarian. It was something that I didn’t NEED to explain in order to have fun with it, but I always enjoyed being able to explain things. Especially as I got older.
The whole technology and Barbarism mash up is not always easy to handle story wise.
@@spectorcreative1872 True! But I’m mainly a fan of Warhammer 40,000, so that’s a mashup that I encounter daily, and I’m quite a fan of it! Thanks for the fun video, mate 🙂
I like how the new CGI cartoon reconciled the jungle warrior and prince of Eternia backstories, with Adam having been kidnapped as a baby, like Adora, and raised in the jungle by Cringer and his Pride.
Found this video trying to understand who has the power, the orb or the sword... After watching Revelation I was extremely confused. The power was placed in the orb but then the sword now has some of the power? Classics seems to have done a much better job of clearly defining where the power is coming from. Great video, thanks.
Hmmm, I wonder how She-Ra and the 'For honour of Greyskull,' would've fit in with MOTU Classics?
I’ll do a follow up on that for sure!
@@spectorcreative1872 YAY :D I wanted to know about this too. what is her sword even called?
@@ravoniesravenshir3926 the Sword of Protection
So... Magical energy from a ball flows into an erect sword and gives He-Man his power?
Oh the symbolism.
You're telling me... Like the Phallic ending to A New Hope
What about in the comics when Adam still had to go to the mystic cave in order to transform?
Lets just say he did that at first until he got the hang of things.
Kudos to this one!
Well thank you. Glad you enjoy.
Kevin Smith should watch this video!! This is great!! Awesome!!
The best transformation and representation of the power rising from the caverns is in the "Into the Abyss" episode of Filmation's series. Love that episode. Also, it's where Adam finally puts Teela in her place, something which imo she regularly forgets!! - "That'll be all Captain" handwave! - Goal scored reaction!! *YEAH!!*
Oh yes very much so
And next, a video for the Sword of Protection!
That is coming actually!
That backstory is he-lariously cool!

3:12, Gorpo was a badguy? Oh, no! Back in the '80s, my parents managed to get me some of the British pre-Filmation-debut books which, I guess, were based on an early version of the series Bible. All throughout, the little Trollan guy was called Gorpo, not Orko, and he wore blue. First impressions count, and Gorpo is what I've called him ever since! Maybe somewhere in the Multiverse, the goodie version of Gorpo is still fighting the forces of evil at He-Man's side!
Originally Gorpo was Orkos name. But it was changed in the US to ensure the animation could be flipped (the "O" on his chest). Naming the Unnamed One Gorpo was an homage to this.
Filmation had a nightmare with Superman for that very reason! 😆
Maybe goodguy Gorpo is from the Mirror Universe and is the sworn enemy of badguy Gorpo!
Hello.;) Great video. As always.
I am a teacher of Concept of Character Creation and Screenplay for fictional universes of videogames, comic books, animations, etc. I work in colleges in Brazil. I love to present your videos in the classroom.
One of the concepts (tropes) that I like to introduce to students is the concept of '' interchangeable battle body ''.
These are human characters, usually without any power. When you say a secret magic word, or use a mystical artifact, or a special device, or the sum of it all, a transformation takes place. An ordinary human being, without powers, gains a new body, with super powers, a special costume or armor. But in reality, this is not necessarily a transformation. This is an exchange of bodies! The body of the common human being, when activating the "trigger of transformation", invokes a substitute body. A special body, a battle body, which is stored elsewhere. Perhaps another dimension.
This special body, which has been summoned, is teleported. And it replaces the body of the ordinary human. And the body of the ordinary human being is sent to the dimension of the special body. Where is safe. Until the transformation is undone.
The hero's soul or mind remains in both bodies. Controlling one body at a time.
This explains that Adam or Billy Batson does not increase in size. Not even his civilian clothes become the costume of his heroes. They switch bodies, just for battle.
Shazam (original Captain Marvel); Captain Marr-Vell; Thor; Kamen Riders; Young Samson and lion Goliath (Hanna-Barbera); Darkhawk (Marvel); She-Ra; He-man and Battle Cat; Miracle Man; Sailor Moon; Madoka Magica; and other heroes, in fact, are users of interchangeable battle bodies. There are other variations of battle bodies users: Neo in '' Matrix '' or the protagonist of '' Altered Carbon ''. Or even the protagonist of James Cameron's Avatar.
There are also examples, many of them in the "Kamen Rider" franchise, where an ordinary human being can choose to summon more than one battle body. Other Kamen Riders can innovate and control two battle bodies at the same time. Or two ordinary human beings can share a single battle body. Something that happens in the concept of characters like Firestorm (DC Comics); Baron One (manga and anime); or the effect of the fusion dance that the heroes of "Dragon Ball" do, when they are combined in a single body (which does not have the sum of the mass of the two characters).
I appreciate your attention and I'm sorry for my poor English. ;) A big hug.
I would be honored for you to share these videos. Obviously Joseph Campbell is a big influence, I would also suggest the book "Our heroes wear Spandex" by Knolls.
@@spectorcreative1872 The honor is mine. ;) His explanation of the difference between dolls and action figures is magnificent. In fact, the entire content of your videos is of great value.

I want to know more about the sword & it's many abilities / properties ( Filmation Sword a ball of living power in the form of a sword) the orb of power also tapping into the star seed.. Etc. Why is Galactic He-man 3 times stronger than regular He-man? Are there other versions that are even stronger?Classics has given so much to the lore, but has created so many questions.. I love the MOTUC Bios. I'm not sure if they are all in a book but they should be. Some of the bios would make great Episodes of He-man! Thank you Scott for your creative process & dedication. I love this series.. Please keep creating more content! Good Journey!
I've got some follow up videos on the way!
Great summary and compilation of the power swore, it seems to fit quite in a good way. I admit being one of those kids who got he man in the form in the 80 s before there was the filmation series I was always more into Oolar version of He man than of Prince Adam /He man. And there has never been a true story that explains that transition between Oolar and Adam maybe something the two future shows will attend or something that was maybe imagined at some point , because turning from that savage /barbarian He-man to Prince Adam seems quite blurry. I saw recently a video from Roger Taylor that prefers too the barbarian version of he man in his point of view. Great video Scott, as always nice insights into the Masterverse and the Motu Classics world.
I will work on more videos filling in some of the story gaps ASAP! Thanks for taking the time to post a great comment.
I figured that's why Skeletor had that sword in the 200x version. That would have been an interesting way to go. When the He-Ro figure came out in the MOTU Classics line, and came with that blue sword, I thought that the story of the sword was written at that time, and not before, as a way to explain why the sword is blue. Because I thought it was an homage to the blue sword that came in the old weapons packs. So this has been very informative to me. Thank you!
You are most welcome. And the blue sword in the weapon pak was for Vikor!
@@spectorcreative1872 The all-blue sword in the original 80s weapons pack? Was Vikor going to be released back then?
Awesome video. I really loved the classics line. At least for me they were really hard to find. They sold out very fast and I had a hard time collecting them, but man were they cool.
So glad you enjoyed the line. We sure loved making it
@@spectorcreative1872 I really did enjoy the line. That must have been a dream job to be able to collect and create at the same time. Especially the filmation figures. Those were awesome. I miss out on them.
The only thing I ever knew about the Power Sword was that it was better than the Sword of Omens. I knew this because Death Battle told me so.
It was a pretty good episode. Hope y'all saw it.

When you said Shazam, I was a little disappointed you didn't show a panel from MOTU vs. Injustice 2 when Prince Adam actually does become Shazam. :P
Oh that is a good point. What a miss!
A great way to start the day!
Happy day start~!
I always thought the magic of the sword distorted the view of other, even if Adam and he man looked the same, you would see someone else unless you knew the secret.
Not a bad concept actually
Not a bad way to look at it, but in Classics we went in a different direction
Hey Toy Guru! I love your channel and always find your intricate explanations of MOTU lore so fascinating. One question that I am not certain has ever been answered: Who were King Grayskull and Veena's children? Or child? They must have had children before King Grayskull died if Adam & Adora are descendants. Though I have yet to see who they might have been. I do not believe it was established in the MYP cartoon. Were their children added to the Classics bios? Thanks! Have a great weekend! 😁
Oh we will get to that! Promise
I had fun playing with the lighting to get that photo of King Grayskull holding the orb just right. I'm proud of that shot!
You did an awesome job. It is one of my favorites I have seen. I'll be sure to credit you on screen next time!
@Spector Creative.
How Does She-ra's Sword Fit in to all of this?
That video is coming soon!
In the unified Classics version of the tale, does scrawny, young Adam ever use the electronic sword?
Yes. I am working on a video that fills in the gap between 200X and mini comic # 1 that will cover this!
Good stuff! It’s funny you touched on how he transformed from skinny to buff. As a 80’s kid, most of the boys I knew and grew up with equated manhood to looking like He-Man and other buffed up hero’s / wrestlers we watched and played with. Many of us are still to this day pretty over-muscled lol. Was anything like that ever discussed inside the toy industry?
The whole skinny to buff thing comes from the 200X series. Classics was an extension of this!
I believe the legend of King Arthur was an influence behind He-Man.
And so are we!
Awesome!
So, after Prince Adam's time some one else will be He Man?.
Does She-Ra's Sword of Protection tap into the Power Orb also?
Yes it does. I'll do a follow up on her sword and how it works!
This make you wounder about Shre's sword as unlike He-man in the old show was shown to be damage where the power sword never was.
Oh a video on she ra is coming too!
Eternia has better Wi Fi than I do. Cheers from Australia.
Very cool information on The Power of Sword. Its cool that u are giving use a story line to follow on all that has taken place with this topic. Now the big question is about The Sword of Protection and it coming into play. When, where and how was She-ra's sword that also lay's in Castle Grayskull with The Power of Sword. I thought that that's where the two sword deal was later changed to from what we know now from the earlier first concept???
I can certainly do a follow up to that!
Best cartoon soundtrack for its time....and even now!
Pretty much!
I hate the term Power Sword ,...it's THE SWORD OF POWER
Or Sword of He in Trollan
Just like power nap.
It's THE NAP OF POWER!!
Power Rangers have Powers Sword,
He-Man has Sword of Power.
i myself prefer Sword of Greyskull seeing as how Adam inheirited it. but i'm also curios about the Sword of Protection as well in how it was fordged.
I truly hope they go the original route in the future where a barbarian is gifted by the Green Goddess armor and weaponry to become a savior to the people.
I would so watch that!
Me too. It would be awesome.
this is exactly what they showed in the masters of the universe revelations. shit they went all out on it. now it is even more interesting.

@@spectorcreative1872 Just FYI I have seen your video before, and I am from India and wanted to let you know how you much you made our childhood awesome. Back in the early 90's we did not have cable tv in my home. The funimation cartoon used to air on the national television channel in 92-93'ish. Watching those were always a joy. When you said the sword worked wirelessly, I did wonder if that helped justify the Sorceress telepathically calling Adam all the time. The sword could also be a telepathic cell phone, maybe even a hot spot for communications.
Magic wireless. But yeah, wireless in a way....

Still one of my favorite sayings
Electronic sword? Oh my god... you have created the midiclorians for the power of Grayskull?

Nice! I appreciate that!
he would hold up the sword and say the phrase that pays, Okie Dokie Artachokie, and connect to the orb via bluetooth lol
That was the back up command.
Two kid-minded royalties arguing:
PRINCE ADAM: I have the power!
LION-O: Thundercats, hooo!!!
PRINCE ADAM: Your sword is powerless when the Eye of Thundera is damaged.
LION-O: You hide if you don't have your sword.
PRINCE ADAM: You're just a kid in an adult body
LION-O: You're an adult with the brain of a kid.
Someone hire this guy for the MOTU movie!
I'm confused... In this narrative, you say Oo-Larr is the one who combined the 2 halves of the Power Sword so that it was ready for Prince Adam to become the true He-Man. But in the Classics Man-At-Arms' bio, it was said that Duncan helped construct the Electronic Power Sword for Prince Adam to use until he could unite both halves of the sword of King Grayskull. Comments?
Oo-lar combined them after centuries of the being lost, and then placed them in special places for Adam. I know, it is a little repetitive.
Ok this was cool. :) I collect the Mega Construx MotU toys. So the blue orb stored in room in the top of the Castle Grayskull playset is that same orb of power that the power sword summons the power from? :O I didn't know what that orb was for til I watched this video. Yeah I liked this video and the Classics explanation of how they all tie in.
Glad you enjoyed! And yes that is the orb!
The multiple He-Men over time got used in the Netflix She-Ra Series were She Ra is a title that got passed down protecting magic and ethiria

Your goofing on misnaming the Sword of Power in the beginning ("Excali... Sword of Ome--...") reminds me: Is there any "canon truth" to the idea that Blackstar, Bravestarr, and MotU are connected/one continuity/shared universe?

Was any lore ever developed on the origin and mythology of the Sword of Honor wielded by Adam's sister Adora?
That video is coming!
Why did they pick pink for Adams clothes?
They were out of silver with sparkles
Having seen many iterations of the lore over the years, I just came to conclude the property hadn't completed developing the back story, and definitely there wasn't consistency between media, ie mini comics, DC's mini series and DCCP crossover, Filmation's series etc.
This wasn't unique in it's day, presumably because not all toy lines had a completely consistent lore throughout their history. And to look as an example the numerous versions of Batman figures have never really been tied together
Trying to combine the various versions from over the decades is no small task and it's admirable the attempt was made. A multiverse explanation would probably have been the easiest, and would allow every iteration to be valid on it's own.
I don't have a problem with rebooting the franchise every once in awhile and having that as it's own thing, taking inspirations from the past iterations. We've seen this done with Transformers, Gundam, etc
I think Tim Seeley did a great job establishing the "Masterverse" as a multiverse for all the iterations. This video focuses on the Classics storyine

Honestly I like the whole sword of power Power sword there is no reason why I should have been called the sort of he. I also like the idea of that gray skull was the source of Adam's Power some quirk in their bloodline where they had the potential for great power but it's basically spent time sleeping as it was needed less and less as the time went on until of course the Family Feud happened Uncle vs. Nephew for the fate of the planet

@@spectorcreative1872 I think I used that as a motto for my first couple years in college. The reason why he’s able to turn into he-man is simple the planet they live on was the very first planet ever made Castle Grey skull is an antenna going straight to the Starseed. When he calls on the power he transmit life force from every living thing in the universe into his body which makes him the most powerful man in the universe. Pretty simple . Also there’s some German influence into this cartoon the word he in German means many. So he would be many men. Not including the iron cross blonde hair blue eyes.
