  • Acclimating shrimp is one of the most crucial aspects to making sure shrimp survive in your aquariums. When you receive shrimp in the mail or from the fish store, there a 6 steps to make sure that those shrimp live in your aquarium and do not die during the transition period (30 days). It is very important to acclimate shrimp correctly or the stress can easily induce molting which could lead to death.

Great guide except for the whole temperature thing. A lot of us have tropical aquariums where the water is significantly warmer than room temperature. So the whole leave the bag out to reach the temperature you want doesn’t work for many of us. But you also said don’t float the container in the water so how the hell would I raise the temperature then? I just bought shrimp online from flip aquatics so I am trying to learn the best way to acclimate but that seems like a pretty big thing to just not mention.

Your water temperature was very similar between the tank and bag. How do you acclimate if you're going to room tempersture of about 65 and tank temperature of 77? I would think the catch cup on the outside of the tank would and the slow drip would not warm the water to the tank temperature.

The "always reach out to the company" works a lot of the time however i recently had a horrible time with one company. Fedex ran 48 hours late. Once my shrimp got here they were all dead. Took pictures and sent them to the company. They have a 7 day money back thing. This company waited till 11pm on day 6 to tell us we needed different pictures because "The pictures you took still had water meaning our customer service cant verify completely". Needless to say that was a lot of money spent on dead shrimp. Purchased from a different company and they showed up live and healthy. Just had my first babies start popping out of the tank. Currently setting up a new tank so in a month or so imma give flip a try. Anything is better than the first company.

Well I bought your acclimation kit. And I bought the dipping pool (same one you link to). It just doesn't work with the dipping pool hanging on the side like that. You kind of completely skip over the part where you set it up and get it hanging just right, but I'm guessing it has to be oh-so-perfect, or the water levels become too close, and suction won't occur. Whatever. I put the dipping pool on a stand next to the tank, about a foot below the tank's water level, and now it's working, sort of.
Good thing I was testing it with snails, first. I'm a ways away from adding shrimp yet.

      Same in Canada.
Yes you can float the bag so it slowly adjusts to the tank temperature.
I now use an empty 2L container, dump the bag with shrimp in, drain some water so there’s about only 150-250ml of the original shrimp water. Then drip acclimate them in the 2L container until it’s almost full. Now you can dump it all into the tank.
If you don’t have an airline valve tie a knot in airline tubing or punch the tubing with a small clamp until you get about 3 drops/second.

@@ruidadgmailcanada8508 I think floating the bag is only an issue if it's one of those silky-feeling air-breathing bags. Floating one of those cuts off the shrimp's O2 source. I don't see an issue with floating a regular plastic bag or just pour them into one of those dip things and hang it on the inside water side of the aquarium instead of the outside. With a rock in it if it wants to float.

I had a 3rd tank of yellow neos but they weren’t as hardy and died off…I think that tank went acidic from over feeding. 😢

@@ruidadgmailcanada8508 Well it is quite a different thing moving fish or shrimp or anything else from a tank in your own home to another tank in your own home. Unless you've done something to deliberately make the tans differ from one another, creating water that's harder or softer than normal, all the tans in your home should all be the same water parameters, temperature etc. and shrimp will only need acclimatizing if the temperatures differ from one tank to another. At most you might want to float them a bit but generally I lun mine in and out of different tanks in my house no problem. But if I travel an hour from home and pick them up at a swap meet r something then I definitely do a drip for an hour or so.

Hi there from Germany, they might have died because they are from different tribes. When shrimps are in an Aquarium, they develop certain bacteria depending on the individual bacteria in this aquarium. So one tribe of Cherry shrimp for example in one Aquarium might therefore be able to tolerance bacteria A, but another tribe of blue shrimp are in a different aquarium and therefore they have a tolerance for bacteria B.
If you now put shrimps from these two tribes together in one aquarium, the cherry shrimp will now be confronted with the bacteria from the blue shrimp and vise versa. Now unfortunately in the worst case, all of them will die, because their immune system does not know the bacteria from the other tribe. That is one of the reasons why you only put one tribe into the aquarium.
You can however try to prevent the deaths if you want different tribes:
      - huge waterchange (80%) in the aquarium where they should get in before you put them in (its about lowering the germ density)
      - humic substances in the water (lowerinf germ density)
      - really slowly acclimation with the aquarium water, best over hours
One note: if they die because of the bacteria from other tribes, they do not need to die on an instance - it can take some weeks. Also there can only be one tribe dieing and one survivng.
In Germany ist called "Bakterielle Unverträglichkeit (BU)" or "Kreuzverkeimung" but I couldn't find the English term 😊

The temperature method won't work if your tank and room temperature are way too much different, example tank with chiller in a hot countries. Drip acclimate wise is good.

Agreed! there are plenty of exception. Now for the every day shrimp hobbyist that has never had shrimp, they need a starting place and this is as easy as it comes. I'll be doing another video on it to talk about issues addressed here.

It's important to read and understand the terms of "DOA" (Dead On Arrival) which your chosen distributor honors for your order because you will often be required to photograph any deceased livestock while they are still in the sealed bag/container they arrived in and may also be expected in some cases to pay for additional shipping/handling on replacement orders. This is also the first time I've seen a "breather bag" (I'm new to the hobby) so with such an opaque surface it could be key to also have access to a camera which can capture detail in good quality pictures in the event that some of your new shrimp don't make it.

Great video flip team. Nice to see you go back to your roots with an updated version. If I get another little fluval tank for Christmas I'm getting some crystal reds from you. I've only ever kept neocaridina.

yall ever have to siphon the water on top of a pool cover, not fun business, we had a tube that was about 3 inches in diameter, and dear god it would take about an hour of the hardest suck a man can deliver. usually resulting in me almost dying on swamp pool water inhalation followed by me spewing out my daily nutrition. well good to say this year we finally found a better system

There a lot of good resources out there for basic shrimp care, but from my understanding, two of the most important things to know about starting shrimp are: water quality and water temperature. If you decide to order shrimp online, read everything about the handling process for the distributor you'd like to purchase from and find any reviews you can for them through Google or ask in a Facebook group for recommendations. Some Petco stores will get new orders of shrimp weekly and may also take order requests, so if you live near one, I recommend calling their aquatics department or asking in person.

I'm sure I'll get hate for this but I've always just dumped them in and I've never had a shrimp die. I mean I have had random shrimp deaths every now and then but only like one at a time and never due to them not acclimating. I'm not saying you don't need to acclimate that I'm just saying I've been lucky.

When you have a normal bag of shrimp with no deaths, should you still leave the shrimp in a separate container for hours? Or does it depend on the temperature more?
