- The film features acclaimed classical vocalist, Tito Gobbi as himself, with the orchestra and chorus of the Venice Opera House. The theme music by Nino Rota was also a contemporary hit. A tale from folklore concerns a mountain made of glass and a man's attempts to climb it, to win the love of a princess. For each step he takes, he slides back two steps; so, cleverly, he turns about and climbs it backwards, gaining double elevation with each downward step.

This film had all the hallmarks of a great movie, were it not for the male lead. He had all the passion of a wet blanket. Totally unconvincing as a driven composer.

Another interesting version for piano and orchestra. I prefer Mantovani's version with what sounds like 2 pianos. I love the glittering arpeggi especially of the piano playing - ascending AND descending.

Hi Steve, I've re-surfaced and can now tell you that this is one of my all-time favourite pieces of music. Saw the film when it first came out and found the music too beautiful to ever forget.

Beautiful, atmospheric piece Steve - I was unaware that Norrie has such a diverse repertoire. I've got this on a Studio Two sampler from way back but I think that's a different version.
Thanks Jo - I think it must be s different one - unfortunately I cannot locate the recording details as the cassette case disappeared some years ago!

Very nice Steve , Norrie was such a big name back then , movies always had such great themes which did a lot to make you want to see the film , dont know how you get that swirling cloud effect but it is great , liked and shared possum :) ms
Hello again and thanks Al - (I do wish YT wouldn't keep suspending comments for "review"). As for swirling clouds - its all very primitive technology using "obsolete" software! - try doing it with the "latest" video editing software and it won't happen.
wordsmith52 yes I still have to approve all the comments , takes ages......... I am with you on the latest software . I downloaded a sky movie maker and I might as well have been a worm being given an aircraft to fly .. my movie days will be over when they stop me using the basic simple movie maker as I will never understand the new stuff .. plenty clouds swirling outside and the wind is now blowing pretty hard .........welcome to Autumn again ..
yes I've tried that Sky thing and it is not very good - too complicated for such little features.... June has / will be a devil for the weather I fear this year... it should clear up in time for winter ...lol!

Music Selection- yes that could be a problem - I really don't think it will make much material difference to most people whatever happens - might make them feel better for a few weeks and then...back to "normal" - whatever that was or is...!

Just watched it again after many years. The music is soo haunting. Watched it first time in my teenage years and have never forgotten it.
