Hear me out - I have a theory regarding Umar's loss and what might have gone wrong with the game planning. Khabib's team seem to keep saying 'he made mistakes' regarding his loss. During some of the corner moments, even early on, Khabib kept telling Umar 'only wrestle now, stop striking', which he would go on to not implement in the round. I think its possible that in the EARLY rounds, Umar may well have been able to implement a grapple-heavy gameplan sustainably to a win, provided he put maximum effort into keeping Merab on the ground. It might have been that engaging with Merab on the ground as much as possible, early on, while fresh, could neutralise Merab's cardio weapon by stopping him from doing what he does best - spamming takedowns. It seems to me like it's the constant cycle of 'defend takedown attempt - get back up - engage in standup while fatigued - repeat' which exhausts people so much, which actually offensively pursuing merab in grappling on the ground could potentially avoid. It doesn't seem impossible that this is what Khabib's team were getting frustrated at Umar for not implementing.
