LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS: Because I know folks will be asking about it, I'm saving it for a potential sequel episode. I've been wanting to cover the Roger Corman version for some time.

I always try to highlight the suit actors when I can. They are such an important part of classic sci-fi. Yet, so often they aren't credited. Then there's cases like The Man from Planet X where all you have is rumor.

Very true. And though I do really like the John Carpenter film, I feel it overshadows The Thing from Another World a bit more than it should. The two are so different, it's not really a far comparison.

Can't agree with you more on Triffids! As I'm sure I've mentioned... it is arguably the most influential Film to the Post/Apoc. Sub Genre! & I more than understand your feelings to 'Inhumanoids'... as I have virtually the same sentiment towards 'Thundar The Barbarian'! Have always speculated that 'Heman' was a more kid-friendly reimagining of the Franchise!

I've seen the 3 feature films highlighted in the video & like 'em all, especially the Thing, which has a claustrophobic noir quality that has always haunted me! I watched both the animated Swamp Thing series and a handful of episode of the live action show. The latter always bugged me a bit because I wanted to see Swamp Thing fight creatures, not just normal humans. Kind of like how the old Marvel live action shows never had supervillains. Though to be fair, the Swamp Thing series may have had monsters, I just didn't give it enough of a shot.
All good choices for the honorable mentions. I had wanted Zoltan from the Killer Tomatoes films/series on the list. But darn if I could not find any footage to use.

The Thing, I saw it on tv. Million. dollar movie, twice a day for a week. Saw it on our black and white TV. scary even with commercials. Although credited to Christian Nyby, It was clearly Hawks mentoring the shoot. As was pointed out to me at art school, When Rembrandt is giving you a lesson you do not take the brush. Carpenter was good and closer to the source, but the feeling of isolation and being under assault by an unknown entity in a hostile environment was captured perfectly in the original. The Thing From Another World has a very special place in my heart and memories. When I was 15, I was watching a creature feature show on an ABC affiliate located in Jacksonville, Florida on Friday nights called The Nightmare Nickelodeon. The host offered viewers a chance to be a guest announcer for the show. I remember copying the address down and sending them a letter with my phone number. After a week had gone by and a screaming match with my mom, the studio called me and told me that I was selected. They told me whom to contact and the movie I was to announce. I had to write down a one minute script for the film before and a one minute script after. The Thing From Another World was the film. I told my mom when she came home from shopping and she didn’t believe me (she was still pissed at me ). She called the studio and another guy involved with The Nightmare Nickelodeon explained to her that I had won a chance to come to the studio and announce for the show. She hung up the phone and apologized to me. My mom immediately called the local newspaper and sent them a picture of me. A few days later, I was in the local paper. We all went to Jacksonville (me, my mom, my sister and younger brother) . We took a taxi to the studio and we went inside. We had s couple of rehearsals before recording my voice. The producer of the show did an introduction for me. I remember part of the script that I wrote and recorded. It went something like this:
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight’s movie is going to show you what it’s like to be the only stranger on Earth. James Arness stars in The Thing.”
I remember falling asleep on the first part of my introduction in the show. But I heard the ending. My classmates and teachers were talking impressed.
The Day Of The Triffids was a scary movie (the BBC did a version that was more in line with the John Wyndham story in the 80’s and, I think, in the early 2000’s). Keiron Moore and Janette Scott would appear together in the sci-fi disaster movie Crack In The World in 1965.
The score composed by Ron Goodwin and Johnny Douglas (of Dungeons & Dragons, The Transformers and G.I. Joe and maybe The Inhumanoids)was very distinctive ( there was more of Douglas’ music than Godwin’s music). Goodwin had the main title theme. Douglas had the hacienda and lighthouse battle music.
From Hell It Came. The Tabonga. That thing gave me nightmares when I was little. It was the meanest thing I’ve ever seen. The dumping the woman in the quicksand scene was the most memorable. And it was simply the fact that the woman betrayed the Prince by killing him and he hated her.
Honorable mentions: The creeping vines in Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors.
The plant creatures in Voodoo Island ( it was Adam West’s first film).
The Martian plant creature in Angry Red Planet.
Matango (I have yet to see this movie). It was hinted that the film may have been the inspiration for Gilligan’s Island because of the characters having similarities but in a horror setting.
Navy Vs. The Night Monsters. From what I’ve heard and read about this movie, produced by Jack Broder(who produced Bride Of The Gorilla with Lon Chaney, Jr. and Raymond Burr), the cast almost walked out.

      @AtomicSnackBar  7 місяців тому +4

That is a great story. Thanks for sharing it with us. It's too bad you weren't able to record the broadcast. Were you able to save the newspaper article at least?
When I was around 8 or 9, I was on the local news for a little feature about a sci-fi con that took place in my home town. Patrick Troughton died at that con. True story. But I managed to tape the little segment. No clue where it is though.
I've heard great things about the 1981 Day of the Triffids mini-series and really, really bad things about the 2000s one. I've been wanting to check out the 1981 version.
I already have a list put together for a sequel episode if this one does well enough. The Navy vs the Night Monsters is definitely on said list. Matango would be good too, but I'm always hesitant with Japanese footage.

I didn't know that there had been a campaign to block it, but that makes so much more sense. We had 3 channels nationally for decades. PBS was there technically, but... really? Not if you were a kid. Sesame Street really brought it to the forefront. Just in time for Dr. Who, Monty Python and my teen years. Cable broke through in the... late 80s.

It was about some tourists trapped on an island spending a stormy night in Mitchell's mansion where people start turning up dead drained of blood. The final reveal is that it was a vampire plant that Mitchell had bred or something. The Tabanga actually looks like a John Carl Buechler design, and his 'trolls' would've scared little nickel as well.... hey! they'd go on this list too, I think they're half-plant! This is retro, though, not the full cinematic scope.
I won't detail too much, but my own modern-folklore-adventure-thriller story, WILDLIFE, has a chapter about a very LARGE Shambling Mound, possessed slightly by an aggressive fungal colony, the _wetika mors legatum,_ or the Coughing Hush as the monsters worshipping it named it. Man-Thing here is very cool though, the perfect aggressive defender of the Green. The Coughing Hush is subterranean, though, and is fed with... something _else._
*THE EVIL THAT LURKS WITHINNNN!* My friend Logan had this on tape, and he had the imprisoning Ribcage Inhumanoid, this show NEEDS a second go-around! It had real horror element potential, with the kaiju angle thrown in as well! Maybe the Legendary Toho series will lean into a nod to this junior property.
I've got a huge blind-spot for Triffids, so I have GOT to get on that.. but it's cool to know the man behind the kaiju mum from the UK was inside that angry plant from space. With Swamp Thing, I mean.. do you have a kind heart and accept the Ray Wise movie in there, or just the full Dick Durock experience? Either way, I can certainly say you picked the right number one for the job in this video. I did say earlier that you were on a retro kick with this list, so I can see how you'd not go with a few real obvious choices.

And in the next episode... different girl. A wiley one, that Mike Shayne, Detective.
