- In this tutorial you will learn how to use the updated Lens Effects for V-Ray. We will discover the basics, add Lens Scratches and Lens Dust, play around with Obstacle Images and I will explain how to use Filter Images. We will discover how to save Presets and finalize by exploring which kind of issues and problems may occur when using materials with very high intensity values.
I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 5 in this demo but you can also use the same techniques for older versions such as V-Ray NEXT and V-Ray 3.

dont know if anyone cares but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can watch all the latest movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Have been binge watching with my gf during the lockdown xD
@Allen Kamdyn Definitely, I've been using InstaFlixxer for since november myself :D
@Allen Kamdyn Yup, I have been using instaflixxer for since november myself :)
@Allen Kamdyn yea, I have been using instaflixxer for since december myself :D
Very useful and precise! thank you.
Amazing!
Thanks a lot!
I just started watching your channel Jonas. and i am loving the level of detail in explaining every tool in Vray!
i myself is a Beginner in vray and dont know many thing about it.. and still alot to learn..but watching you explaining those tool is so much fun to learn now ! thank you ! now i know how to use Lens effect LOL
pls don stop making these amazing video jonas! pls help people like me hahaha
Thank you!
If you want a certain toppic covered as a tutorial let me know here in the comments :)
It would be awesome if you can make one about VrayEnviromentFog, but a little bit strong one, with a cloudy/smokey pattern all over the space (I hope you understand me)
Great idea, I will do some additional research about it and add it on my list!
I never got the lens effect working, is it because i use architectural feets and inces unit setup instead of mm or cm or is it something else, also when you use Vray sun along with interior lights and use lens effects there is bloom and glare in all the illuminated portions even when you play with the threshold value it doesnt seem to work so if you can help in that it would be great, i can also share a simple scene to illustrate that
well explained..........
Thank you
great job
Thank you for this tutorial it is really helpful.
I wish you do some tutorial about rendering under ACES color space
Hi, great idea! Will definitely cover this topic as well after some additional research.
Thank you for the explanations!
Problem: I don't get any bloom/glare-renderpass, when I'm doing an animation. It doesn't even show up in the render elements tab to add...
It's just added when I'm saving a single frame. (I'm using Vray next update 2.1)
Great One !, Keep up the awesome effort
How can I generate Bloom/Glare for specific lights in the scene (Instances for example) or how can I have more than one type of effect applied inside the Frame buffer without the need mask it in the post (photoshop)
For example
First one is settled effect for the large sources like windows
The second effect could be much stronger for small sources (lamps/spotlights ...etc)
Hi, thanks for your feedback. Regarding your questions, AFAIK right now it is not possible to have multiple lens effects with different settings for different light sources in your scene. The only way to control where the lens effects are appearing is with the treshold so you can just limit the lens effects based on the brightness of certain pixels. For a combination of different lens effects you would need to go through Photoshop. I agree it would be better to have more control about this, such as multiple lens effects for separate lights and so on. Let's hope for a future update :)
Even if it seems that we are working on light, it is in fact on the parameters and the nature of the lens placed in front of our camera that these settings apply. It is therefore natural that these adjustments apply to the whole image. You cannot use several objectives with different types of diaphagmes or different lenses depending on the part of the image to be processed.
hey Jonas I love your videos, i was wondering why you never use the mesh light option for lighting things such as this light bulb metal piece
Hi, because mesh light is like the most ineffective way of lighting something, because it would internally create one light per each polygon face. So unless there is a really specific reason why you can’t get around mesh lights I would basically avoid to use them at all costs :)
@@JonasNoell wow, I didn't realize it creates a light per polygon, that must be heavier on the render engine.. what if its a very low poly mesh though, thanks for answering
@@sherifhany386 The more lowpoly the better of course, but I would always try to fake as much as possible by just using planar, disk or spherical lights wherever possible. So far I haven't really encountered a plausible situation where meshlights were the only possibility. But anyway it depends on your specific situation. I'm not saying you should definetly not use them, but you should be aware that meshlights are the most uneffective way of calculating lighting in V-Ray. So if possible try to use other approaches :-)
Thanks for explonation. I have some issue - when I save final render in PNG, all my lens effect, which out of alpha, ar disappeared. How I can fix it?

Hi, the chosen units do not have any impact on the lens effect as it is a very 2d post effect that is applied to the finished rendering. For the other part you would need to share a scene and I can take a look :) info@jonasnoell.com
thanks for the video. but why it is not showing if I put exponential in my color mapping and have my burn and bright value adjusted. Thanks
Had the same problem. Someone else pointed out that it may be the Color Mapping render settings. Instead of using Exponential try using Reinhard or Linear Multiply. Worked for me.
Hello Jonas, I use V-ray for Sketchup which is almost the same as explained here. You advised not to use the filter_generator, but I disagree. You can generate cool realistic effects which can give your work just that little extra to win the customer.
Hi, thanks for the feedback! That is interesting to hear, so far I personally never really got something that looked convincing out of it but I also can't say that I tried a lot. Can you share of how you are using it exactly, I would like to try out!
@@JonasNoell Just by trial and error and see what you like and is "realistic". I agree the generated outcome should be used moderate. Sometimes less is better.
@@richardvankesteren7013 Alright, I will give it another try! Thx for your feedback!
Hello @JonasNoell
I have a render scene of 3dsmax+Vray and somehow I cannot run the lens effect except when I open a new max scene from scratch. What you have to switch on that it will work or what can cause it's not running?
When I've got open a new scratch scene it works but how can I select, that for example only one light bulb of three is glowing and the others not even if I applied VrayLightMtl?
I dont know where else to ask
This only works in the latest update of V-Ray where you can apply a mask to the LensEffects. You can check out my 6.1 Update video for that.
As why your lens effects only show up in a new scene probably your original scene doesn’t have the ‘Autoswitch to Effects result’ enabled in the render setting in your original scene…
@@JonasNoell Thanks JonasNoell but it's ticked on. Somehow I dont get why it's not working in my scene anymore. Maybe something is colliding or avoiding it.
Anyway I would like to ask you another question because I am pretty sure you know how to solve it.
Cars most often have Daylight LED in the front. Is there another way you can light it up in Vray than with VrayLightMtl because I am missing the lens effect (glow effect)
How do you save out the lens effects pass in animations? Not just stills?
Hi, it generates a RenderElement pass calles Glare, that contains the layer so you can use it in post. There should be no difference between stillframe and animation in that regard.
@@JonasNoell I usually have to render a still frame then apply glare. Do you mean once I have done that go ahead and re-render the frame as a sequence and it will then apply the glare effect settings to every frame? Through frame buffer/seperate render channels?
@@DavidBaca3d I hope I understand your problem correctly, but you would basically need to enable the lenseffects and then render out the sequences with all the renderpasses. You then have a layer that only contains the glare. You could technically substract then the glare layer from the RGBColor pass to have both of them seperately and then later add the glare effect back in again.
Probably you can also hide the LensEffects pass while keeping it enabled and then this way you would render out a RGBColor without lenseffects and still have the Glare in the renderelements. But I didn't try this out, so don't take my word for it :)
@@JonasNoell Yes exactly what I was wondering! In my mind I was thinking "Am I going to have to render out this sequence twice just to be able to seperate the glare pass from the base render?" I'll do some testing and try it out! Thank you for the replies!
@@DavidBaca3d Actually I just tested and when you render a sequence you will get following 3 passes:
- RGBcolor pass that does NOT contain your lenseffects but just your raw rendering
- Glare pass with the lens effects separated on black so you can add it back in compositing
- EffectsResult pass that has the lenseffects applied to your RGBcolor (together with all other colorcorrections and so on)
Like this way you should have all the things you need technically :-)
Hello. I use V ray 5 and my bloom effects are lost after the render finished. Why can it be? Please, help my friend :(
You mean once you save the picture or when are they lost? If you check the saved out frames there should be an EffectsResult Channel or something similar that has the lens effects saved in. Just go through all the saved out channels.
@@JonasNoell This is very strange but I opened a new page and tried to do this effect and effect didn't lose any more. I had used HDR Light Studio for the last training. Perhaps, it changed something. Thanks, my friend. I like your videos and I follow you.
@@JonasNoell, Finally I solved this problem. It is about threshold settings. When I make it closer to 0,000 then I could see great results on the object and I saw you did it. But you made intensity is very very high. Even if I don't touch it, if I make the threshold closer to 0,000, my object seems perfect with bloom effects. Thank you for this great video.
Ok good to hear you managed to solve it 😀
@@JonasNoell Thanks so much. :)
In pervious version of Vray I can save render element from glare/bloom in a separate channel .... in Vray 5 where I can find this option ?
This option AFAIK is not available anymore and both are combined in one element which is called "Glare". Basically the way the lenseffects work now is that you don't have bloom and glare separately like in earlier versions but they are combined in one effect where you fade between bloom and glare.
@@JonasNoell you didn't catchup what I am saying ..... I mean how to make all glare into an element so I can use it in Photoshop and mask what ever I need
@@mego2022 It should create a renderlayer automatically which is called "Glare". In there you have your lenseffects separately on black so that you can screen or add it back on original rendering. There is no need to manually add the option to create a renderelement anymore like in earlier versions. Are you not getting a renderelement that contains your lenseffects by default?
@@JonasNoell Here, This a link for a screenshot I've made on a pervious Vray version and I Mark on the option that I do not find in the current version
pasteboard.co/JE12wF9.png
@@JonasNoell No I am not getting the element automatically, Any help?
there are no layers over here. no lens effects.. nothing. how do you get them back? can't find a solution anywhere
Should be there by default, in fact there is no way to remove it manually :-) Try switching to Scanline render and then back to V-Ray and see if that does anything
@@JonasNoell strangely enough that did the trick. thank you!
