Nice work, glad to see something saved and repaired instead of just replaced! I used a pretty similar method to fix our rolling garbage can that had split... I bent 1.5” 16g finish nails into an S shape and melted them in!
Exactly that mate, I chose not to explain it in detail, as I've already covered it in two videos before, but it seems many people don't watch the older stuff, so maybe I will do a refresher simple skills on it another time!
Got some bags that are a bit knackered. Never thought of repairing them like that (plastic welding) was going to bin them. Hmmm time to try some thing different Cheers have a good weekend and safe trip
Hey Willie, it took me ages to find them small enough.. they are the same model as the bags on the T2 bike....just have the Ealskin inserts.. an other bag i saw was just massive and made the bike look like a Heritage...
You have the patience of Job, the saddlebags came up really well. Have you thought about a bit of dubbing, it'll soften & waterproof (maybe for the snakeskin) Fatboy looks good with them on --have a great weekend
Thakns Geoff... the boot polish made a great job of them, i have lots of 'products' ive tried over the years...neatsfoot oil, Renapur balsum, nikwax etc etc...but i still find just plain olf black boot polish makes a great finish to them..!
Depending on the use you IME you should be careful with dubbin as it's quite sticky and will clog the pores of the leather. It is good for waterproofing though. Personally on old leather I'd have used some sort of nourisher first as an extra conditioner before polish - ideally left over night somewhere warmish (not hot). Polish will obviously help condition as well and the leather looked in VGC without cracks, so it might not have needed it. Got to say the plastic brazing was amazing!
Ha ha, well its the same principle i guess... you feed the tip in and out all along the crack to melt the two halves together, then add filler material.... same as Tig welding but with plastic.. it was even TIG wire i was melthing in as stitches to re-enfource the repair..!
Is there no end to your talent's Del. lil metal tags, melted in and then melty plasticy to repair and make it all back into one piece. very cleaver. would never thought of that myself, have used the boot polish trick before tho. You'd make a great Starfleet engineer lol
Yo, Del, you gotta give an explanation on exactly how you did that. That was one of the coolest things I've ever seen on how to fix busted leather. Please tell us step by step.
Hi mate, I have two other videos on plastic welding in the playlists... and covered plastic welding in great depth and detail in both of those videos... so I thought pretty much I had covered it in the past, but it seems, as those videos are a little old now, people aren't watching anything but the latest video, which is cool, so perhaps I will make a simple skills on this method of plastic repair to bring it up to date, as a few have asked...
Cheers mate.. had to chuckle.. this was billed as North meets Midlands".....and now ALL of you lot in the Midlands have cried off, and half of you flounced out of the forum all together...hysterical mate... so its now, "South meets North" aye...lol.
+Moonfleet41 ain't col and Stan going the collective more of a southern thing anyway dude know what ur saying though I'm looking forward too Jurassic run
No mate...after practically begging me to come...Colins' now left the forum all together, and Stan's still workin on his bike...also two others flounced out of the forum becuase "Squires" wasn't a private party just for them... and dont forget.. this was YOUR lots event....Colin set it up, and no nobody from the midlands is even coming, thats even if they are still on the forum at all...pathetic and shameful behaviour mate... im deleting the Midlands section just as soon as i can be bothered..may take a dump instead as its more interesting..!
+Moonfleet41 hey buddy im still a member always will be because others behaviour is inappropriate doesn't mean others are I do my own thing hope things get sorted catch up with u soon
Yeah, sure thing, not tarring everyone with the same brush mate, it's just the odd behaviour always seems to come from the same people, all the bad mouthing we tolerated, and we never bit back... can't be done with them all any more... see you in September buddy!
Hey! Learned a lot from your soft tail service videos! Thank you so much! I also own a year 2000 FLSTF FatBoy and youtube brought me back to tour channel. Do you have extra videos when it comes to fat boys? :)) Because I’d like to change/upgrade my tank, cuz my fuel gauge is not working. Typical I know. Also if I want to change my headlamp case I’d need to access some cables that are also tucked in below the tank. Eventually I want to upgrade the tank so I can install a more modern fuel gauge with leds and maybe a new speedo and console cover. Please let me know if you have such a video guide of sorts behind the patreon paywall or something. I’d pay for it gladly. Thanks again for all you do / share. Keep it up. Wish you guys the best. Greetings from Norway.
Hi there.. Sadly, im afraid i don;t have any more Harley videos than are already in the play lists, it sounds like there are a lot of upgrades you are planning, and other than the engine service and suspension videos, we cover a wide range of other bikes as well as Harleys, so only what we have on shown and no more in Patreon unfortunately.. but thank you for your kind support, we're glad they our videos can help you in some way.
Hi Good job on the bags, they look new. Been watching your vids for a couple of years now. I am planning on buying my first motorcycle and I want this to be a 883. Preferably a 883R (2004-up). Is there anything I should be aware of in regards to known problems with the 883Rs? I am not into racing and just want the bike because of the sound and looks. Other than your vid explaining what to look for when buying a used motorcycle any input regarding things to look out for is appreciated. Thanks for your informative videos.
+Moonfleet41 thanks for the input. The good thing is I do not have to stress with finding one. I can take my time and dont rush anything. Given that it rains almost 300 days here there are many low milage possibilities. Cheers.
Nice work Del! How much watts is your soldering iron - I get good results with 40ty but I think it's a bit hotter than needed for plastics... One pice of advice - you could use some hand cream to recondition the leather before shoe polish - it gets softer and holds better in wet weather... On the other hand - who drives a Harley in the rain :d
I DRIVE A HARLEY IN THE RAIN ill have you know... i dont own a car so no choice..!!! and yeah, vasaline, even baby oil wiped over before the polish makes the leather shinier...but iwanted to feed lots in bone dry as they are 24 years old and very dried out... great now, and Mr Sheen brings them up like new..
+Moonfleet41 yeah, you have no car, but also no snow :p here I have to stop riding for several months and to become peasant driving old vauxhall :d Cheers Del, great work!
Different take on it with this one Del. Cracking job there with the saddlebags. One question, did you buff the polish off after a while? or did ai just miss it. ha. That tune was sweet as well. Cheers mate.
Thanks buddy, I actually put 3 coats of the polish on, and the dry old leather, just breathed it in... only on the 4th coat did it sit on top a little, so once they were mounted on the bike, I actually gave them a buff up with the cloth... and the music is a new selection from a kind musician who just makes it for his own enjoyment ... !
Hi mate.. they are genuine Harley items from 1992, made from 4mm thick harness leather, really soft and supple, responded really well to the polish too.. probably cost about £500 when they were new.. chuffed to have found them.!
Nice job - came out looking great. Two questions for you. Did you use andy leather protectant or waterproofing after the polish? And I remember a 'How To" you did on plastic welding. Is there a link to it? Never mind - I found the plastic welding tutorial. Here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/61iyLarL258/v-deo.html
Not in 100 years would it have occurred to me to plastic weld with a soldering iron and a zip strip. For that and the melted-in wire reinforcement, I am much obliged, sir. Neither of our Harleys need such attention st the moment, but it’s only a matter of time, is it not?
Hey buddy, of course, that would be fantastic... we aren't simply interested in one from each state, or place, but any viewer who wants to send a plate that they would like to see on the wall... we believe it's a little personal connection with our audience, so if you contact Penny on: moonfleet10@yahoo.co.uk she will give you some land address details! Thank You
Way....! Use TIG welding wire, cos it conducts heat brilliantly, figure 8 is the best shape, as straight stiches can pull out, press the soldering iron on them, and as the plastic back boards are 5mm thick, they melt right inside, and form a perfect endo-skeleton... you don't really need to melt plastic over the top, but it does give a little extra strength!
+Moonfleet41 Never thought of using tig wire... I usually cut n bend lots of heavy duty paper clips or staples into the right shape, then heat em with a torch till I can drop one on n press it in!
Naah, thick paper clips are spiringy.. Tig wire is soft and bendy, and you're wasting your time preheating them, just drop them over the crack cold, and press them with the soldering iron, they pick up the heat and burn right in no trouble.. then beef up over the top with some more plastic both sides..
SO I guess Im just supposed to guess what your doing? Watching you do work on the bags with no narrative on what your doing or why is of no help at all!
Sorry Bill.. the camera developed a fault and stopped recording sound for pretty much all of this footage.. i had noo choice but to salvage the image file and use the music to make it watchable... made it clear onscreen at 00:23 !
Nice work, glad to see something saved and repaired instead of just replaced! I used a pretty similar method to fix our rolling garbage can that had split... I bent 1.5” 16g finish nails into an S shape and melted them in!
Liked the welding of the plastic. Great way to recycle into practically as good as new again and they look the part on the bike...right proper result
Thanks buddy... that method of plastci welding works on body panels too...great to save seom cool old bags aye... thanks for watching mate.
Brilliant idea using the zip ties! And great job bringing the leather back to life. Great as always. Cheers, Rodrigo.
Hey Rodrigo, good to hear from you, have a bash yourself, its real easy and you can repair all sorts of things rather then throw them away.!
This was interesting, I never thought about using tie wraps for filler...Another awesome learning video...great job
Thanks mate, it's an old ghetto trick and works on just about any injection plastic....!
Great job! Brilliant idea stitching it together with wire and plastic strips. That looked time consuming.
Don't even go there mate, 9am till 6.10pm ! A proper full day in the garage... but well worth it !
Sweet little nugget of knowledge, plastic welding. Nice. I used two old respirator haversacks for panniers.
love the idea of melting the clips in, very clever
Simple stuff Dave, make a strong skeleton stitch across the crack to stop it flexing and braeaking again..!
Great job on those saddlebags! I could anticipate your solutions due to your previous 'How to' videos. Great stuff..!!
Exactly that mate, I chose not to explain it in detail, as I've already covered it in two videos before, but it seems many people don't watch the older stuff, so maybe I will do a refresher simple skills on it another time!
Wow ! That's quality. Nice work Del
Thanks Tobias, much appreciated mate.
awesome fix and rework....ya nailed it
Thanks Robert, really chuffed with them .
Wow, Del the garage looks amazing! You guys did a phenominal job.
Got some bags that are a bit knackered. Never thought of repairing them like that (plastic welding) was going to bin them. Hmmm time to try some thing different Cheers have a good weekend and safe trip
Thanks mate... really lookin forward to it.
What an awesome set of bags , the two tone sets them off .
I must admit they do look great well done on finding them, JJ
They look great Del. a real find. Plastic welding is great saves a lot of money.
Cheers Pete.
Sure soes Pete.
Had a chuckle at the "Vintage 1992". What does that make my bike and bags? Freaking old!
It makes them almost as old as Penny lol !
+Moonfleet41 P
Mines almost as old as me, but it has an easier time getting going the morning.
Tut tut Del, kiwi polish is the way to go lol.
Yeah yeah i know... didnt have any.! consider me on jankers..!
Good job , jobbed . Somewhere for cake and a cuppa 😋
Ha ha... sure thing mate... hope you're healing well fellah. !
+Moonfleet41 it's goin to be slow but fingers crossed should be at Jurassic run
that was brilliant,,I really enjoyed something different 😊
Thanks mate, I agree, variety is important!
love the ending. such a humble guy. love your channel
Thanks Frankie, really appreciate your kind comments... take care. del.
Great job ,good lookin bags, I am jealous wish I had them on my machine.Keep the shiny side up.WW
Hey Willie, it took me ages to find them small enough.. they are the same model as the bags on the T2 bike....just have the Ealskin inserts.. an other bag i saw was just massive and made the bike look like a Heritage...
Great job on the bags Del.
Cheers buddy.. really chuffed with them..
Excellent refurb, now I think the Ebay seller wants them back!
Having done a little research, and found out exactly what bags they actually are, I certainly think he under-sold them, that's for sure !
You have the patience of Job, the saddlebags came up really well. Have you thought about a bit of dubbing, it'll soften & waterproof (maybe for the snakeskin) Fatboy looks good with them on --have a great weekend

Thanks Byron, so chuffed with the look.. small enough to fit in and not look like a Heritage...but big enough to carry a fair bit too..
nice1....looking box fresh again...lol :)
Thanks buddy... great find and happy with them now.
Awesome work! Just saw a portuguese license plate! Yeah! :)
Thanks Filipe, we have many viewers from there, and personal friends too.!
absolutely fantastic. great job.

Nice save with the music del
Thanks mate... counldn;t beleive it when i loaded the data into movie maker...
Today I learned: how to fix broken plastic with little metal squares and some zipties
FUCKING ACE
They suit the bike perfect and not too wide like some bags. Love the panels on them too, snakeskin? :)
Thanks mate, really pleased with them... and yeah, it is real snakeskin... was gonna dab over the black, but I kinda like 'em in a retro kind of way !
+Moonfleet41 Definitely look good as they are mate, classic and a bit different!
what a new tin.. couldn't you find the dried up one under the kitchen sink, it might have been the same age as the bags. they look great my friend
Hey Tony....yeah i know, i even melted the last crumb out of the old tin for my boots in the week... so had to relent and buy some new stuff....!!!
Good job del keep them coming 👍
Well, when the music started I cut the video. I want to hear what you did not listen to music. later
You can see in detail what he's doing though, so I don't see what the problem is?
I like them.... there unusual...kool
Exact same bags it turns out as in the "T2 Harley Fatboy" www.jsonline.com/multimedia/video?bctid=4360019251001
(P) Great restoration Del, see you on Saturday!

How can I get the motor oil off my leather saddlebags??
great job, i do like plastic welding but boy it can stink and sting your eyes
You are right there mate, open environment too as it gives off some pretty nasty poisons!
Hi Del, What are the bags made of are they leather or a plastic sorry to have to asked but I could not turn my volume up, Cheers for now JJ.

Hello Del did you say Squires Cafe? As in Leeds?
I mostly certainly did Sir ! Be there with a few others from mid-afternoon Saturday, and leaving Monday morning... you coming over for a brew then?!
+Moonfleet41 I'll try and get over. Hope to see you then.
i did not see a ohio plate. Do you want me to send you one?
