For thousands of years the land of Ulster has always been distinct from the rest of Ireland, both culturally & historically. Native Britons (Celts) have continuously moved back & forth between Ulster and Western Scotland, long before the plantations, and so what the Irish would call "British" genes have always been around in Ulster. A good example is the Dal Riada who had land on both sides of the water. Like it or not Ulster has ALWAYS been both British AND Irish
The 30th (Liverpool and Manchester ) division and the 47th (London) division took everything in front of them on 1st July 1916. The Army was let down by lack of communications and the English county regiments were slaughtered. Every county, city, town, and village paid the Blood Price for the First World War. Respect to all who lost loved ones in that terrible conflict. Respect to the Ulster 36th Division, but you were far from alone.

One thing I always wonder is how different history would have been if the ulster and Irish regiments had not of aided England and tended to affairs at home.
The 36th Ulster Division were the only British regiment to fulfill their goals on the Somme. Every lad on the Front saluted those gallant men. Even the Germans described them as Heroic.
The less said about the role of Southern Ireland in WW1 & WW2 the better. Got a lot of respect for those who did fight, they put humanity before hatred and bigotry
Remember The sacrifice of the Dead and Wounded Men who served their King, Kaiser, Czar, and President in the bitter Great War of 1914-1918. Allied or Central Powered, Men as tough as the ones who fought in this war aren't around anymore.
The Ulster Division deserves to be remembered for the sacrifice it made out of genuine loyalty to the United Kingdom, but this song is an insult to them, to the point where one could be forgiven for thinking it was written by a Sinn Fein troll or a communist trying to work up some kind of divisive scam. I am Northern Irish and proud of it, three generations of my family WW1, WW2 and the Troubles have served in the British Armed forces, and never once did I ever hear any relative of mine or anybody else for that matter express the sentiment that we were fighting England's wars. Yes, I too believe that some British politicians and 'Yes Minister' types stabbed Northern Ireland in the back and did so more than once, but people like that do not represent the United Kingdom that I loved any more than this awful song reflects the sentiments of Northern Irish veterans. As for the Northern Irish being so resentful of the so called 'Englishman' that we were no longer prepared to leave home and serve oversea, that is demonstrable, propagandist rubbish. No way should this song be used as an educational resource. And in conclusion, I remember from personal experience the decent young Englishmen who put their lives on the line in Northern Ireland. And lets not forget that an astounding number of Irishmen from the Republic have served with distinction in British Army uniform. As one Australian WW1 veteran once said to me, 'We were all in it together.' Amen to that.
What you said in your comment is true, but I don't think it's an insult to them. The soldiers that were lucky enough to survive WWI came back to a country that had been divided by politicians sitting in London.
@@farokudahitam you mean britain not england all 4 representatives in parliament put the vote through, yes that means from england, wales, scotland, NI, and even from the rebulic itself blaming just one nation out of all is bigoted and unfair and seems more of a dissident ploy to sow division like from rebulicans and the EU and its remoaners than loyalists and patriots... Well said. The south's losses were terrible as well. And they were damned because the political climate had changed so much between 1916 and 1919 that they went off as men doing their duty, and back as "traitors". Along with the child abuse thing, this state, my state, has an awful lot to answer for. I am only stating to realise now that it is as a gentlemans club, with all our history books geared to justify it, and its nepotistic politics. Well said though: nice comment, no bitterness.
Yes more English tommies died but the English population was a lot bigger than Ulster's and it was the working class across Britain who paid the price Lions led by donkies political donkies.
Its wrong to say that the English did this or that. It was the Westminster goverment who were responsible, not the ordinary Englishman. Another thing, it wasn't Englishmen who gave up the three lost counties, but Ulster unionists who realised they couldn't hold 9 counties for any length of time. In the 1800s Home Rule Bill it was the English MPs who defeated it. The Scots and Welsh voted for it. I say all this as a loyal Ulsterman. The truth must prevail
No - more Irish Catholics than Irish Protestants served in both wars. You should look into this. Over 200,000 Irish from the South in WW1 and 60,000 in WW2 - more than you in the North. Yes their contribution was ignored until very recently but this is also changing for the better.
I'll tell you for what To put the kraut menace down once again. One of the greatest things the empire did for the world, along with abolishing slavery and the industrial revolution. And I'd sign up to do it again in a heartbeat.
My Grandfather, his Brother and two of his Brothers in Law died on the Somme, They were English, I would suggest that far more English died during the war, that is not to take away the bravery of those Irishmen who did fight, wherever they were from.
@12ydder A big thank you - when I searched for the lyrics many of them contradicted one another. Therefore, I had to listen to the song over and over again - some of the singing is a bit ropey in places and it was hard to work out what he was saying. I just hope the sentiment was right!
My husbands grandfather fought in The 36th Ulster Division my Great Grandfather also fought there and he died my husbands Grandad survived and served in the Second World War brave men from the Southern Ireland fought and died also both bodies of men were betrayed by Westminster Faugh a Balagh.
Fantastic song, Englands decison to sell off the birthright of so many Protestants that fought and died for Britain was wrong. To the brave men of the three counties severed by Great Britain thanks you for your courage and valour.
"Sold away by those they fought to save"... Was it not James Craig, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, who convinced the British Government to abandon their plans for a 9-County Northern Ireland (I.e. All of Ulster), and go with the current 6-Counties; so that there would be a unionist majority in NI?
My great-grandfather was in the 10th Division during World War I. He joined the Tans after the war and ended up fighting on the pro-Treaty side in the civil war.

Edd Ryan ,1.5 million irish starved to death by the glorious empire ,meanwhile what food was produced was sent across thr erin sea to feed the english theives.
CHURCHILL,cowards ,disraeli and victoria sat and watched approx2 million irish die ,due to potato blight ,meanwhile ,the prijme beef ,and cereal crops harvested on the east coast, was shipped to feed the empire ,COWARDS MY ARSE.
e james You need to do some research ....look to the facts and figures....about southern Irish that fought in both wars .As for our neutrality in the second world war well that was Churchill's war along with his Jewish paymasters .....I had relatives that fought and died in both .....did you ?
Michael Ahern Yes certainly plenty of Irish men fought and died in the wars but what did your government call them? Traitors it's only recently that they have acknowledged those hero's weren't traitors at all but those families had to live with the stigma of being called traitors. I am glad of all who fought and will remember their sacrifice for the rest of my days but don't act like they were sent to help by the Irish people. They weren't which in my book makes them even braver as some where even hung on return
This song is about WW1 which is why ive stuck to commenting on WW1.The many southern Irish in WW1 have not had any of the respect they deserve especially from their own people.do you agree then that Carson gave up the 3 counties and they werent "sold" by England ???
It’s American pressure over the last 100 yrs on the assumption that northern Ireland is an occupied territory when on reality it’s a self determined province….respect to all Ulster men ….
bang on my dad was a rifle man! and yes the 36th ulster division were the only ones to gain ground! but they were all sold out to fight a bs war while the high and mighty sat back home in blighty drinking tea a bit like today
It's the UFF who use the O'Neill motto "Lamh Dhearg Abu" (please spell it right at least) and the Red Hand is an emblem that Ulstermen have always used to distinguish themselves from the rest of Ireland. Besides Ulstermen always have been different, long before the plantations ever happened. Do you know what the word "hun" means and where it comes from? You might as well call a spade a kettle!
@buckfastred Actually, neither Japan nor Italy were affiliated with the Central Powers (i.e. German Empire and allies) during the Great War. Both countrys fought alongside Britain, France, the USA, and the other Allied nations, and both sustained casualties fighting the Central Powers.
burnleyfan - Churchill's many and checkered decisions can (and have) be debated, give the many his due: in 1916, he was on active service, in the trenches, commanding a battalion of the Royal Scots. I know of no other major politician (at the time) from either side, who spent months in the trenches.
tim biggart just to correct you in that Churchill commanded a company of ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS not the Royal Scots. They were two different lowland Scots Infantry regiments who predominantly recruited from different parts of the lowlands with the fusiliers coming from AYRSHIRE.
It wasn't Haig either. Northern Ireland borders were agreed on by Carson and Craig (both Irish born). I also take issue with the claim that WW1 was 'England's problem'.Ulster volunteers fought as British men (afterall that is what the whole trouble was about pre war.). There were a number of factors which motivated men (inc Ulstermen) to enlist including patriotism, peer pressure, propaganda etc. Ulstermen never did anything at an 'Englishman's command' and it is disparaging to suggest they did.
@tullyDT How does Home Rule work when you have thousands of heavily armed loyalist Protestants marching through the Streets of Belfast opposing it in 1912 and the British Army Officer saying they won't enforce the Home Rule Law? There was never going to be Home Rule, and the British Government was never going to implement that law.
The Irish and the English have been inextricably linked over many centuries of blood and sacrifice. Many commanders at the top level of the armed services and politics have blood origins in Ireland - think of The Duke of Wellington and others. Irish officers have thus commanded the English as well as vice versa. The Irish Guards and others still bring pride to themselves and the armed forces of which they are honoured and admired members.. and the UK armed services.
what you saying , englands decision ?? last time i looked it was the british government with both scots, welsh and northern irish MPs sitting , the british government couldnt win either way, home rule was on the books during victorian times , each time thrown out by ulster protestants and unionist mps,,after ww1 , the unionists threatened revolt and all out civil war , so ulster was partitioned to save a greater civil war breaking out ,,in 69 the british army went in to prevent all out violence
Interesting footage. I recently visited the grave of my Great Uncle who died on July 1st and is buried at Thiepval - he was 19 years old. This song is dreadful. It associates 'Flanders fields' (Belgium) with the Somme and suggest 1916 is in the 'early days of WW1' - 1916 was the midpoint. Those are just two of many dubious assertions -It serves the memory of the fallen poorly to misrepresent their slaughter in such a song.
Nonsense - at what point does this talk about Flanders specifically? My great grandfather fought from 1912 actually but the slaughter was exemplified in 1916 when millions died and cowards back home in Ireland rose in rebellion. In 1912 this division was raised and then in 1914 we were threatened. 1916 to 1918 was the core of the war. Have you even listened to the song?
I'm from the South and I'm fed up of all the republican propaganda those bastards spat on the memories of deceased family members of mine for almost a century calling them traitors. Despite what they would have us believe the majority of Irish people in the south only wanted a home Parliament they were content to remain in the Union any objective history book will tell you this, if Maxwell hadn't botched his response to the rising I doubt the rebels would have gotten any sympathy.
That was a long time ago, we've all had the time to recognise that the Englishmen referred to in that song, are the Sires of the treacherous dogs that are betraying us now. But thanks to the internet, the game's up for that lot very soon.

One thing I always wonder is how different history would have been if the ulster and Irish regiments had not of aided England and tended to affairs at home.
God Bless the Thousands from Eire who Fought in both World Wars , Remembering All those Who Die for Peace .
The 36th Ulster Division were the only British regiment to fulfill their goals on the Somme. Every lad on the Front saluted those gallant men. Even the Germans described them as Heroic.
God bless these boys and the very many English boys who ran at them.
The less said about the role of Southern Ireland in WW1 & WW2 the better. Got a lot of respect for those who did fight, they put humanity before hatred and bigotry
Best song ever... what a story.
And still proud of each and every one . 103years ago they gave all
Remember The sacrifice of the Dead and Wounded Men who served their King, Kaiser, Czar, and President in the bitter Great War of 1914-1918. Allied or Central Powered, Men as tough as the ones who fought in this war aren't around anymore.
The Ulster men were and still are brilliant 🏴🇬🇧
36th division(UVF) gave their life’s for to keep Ulster free from a United ireland coz thy are British born and fly under the jack NO SURRENDER
Simple. So proud to be live in in northern Ireland. So proud to be British.
But as an Englishman we have always betrayed Ulster is it suited us and Ulster keeps proving its loyalty in blood and England doesn't seem to notice.
It aint right, its the whole of britain that done it.. And should be labelled so..
@@wor53lg50 Scotland and Wales have always had a small voice in Westminster.
Ireland was always just a chip in the game
@@farokudahitam dont be an idiot all your life, theres some good advice in that...
Thursday 1st July 2021 - We will remember the 36th Ulster Division 🇬🇧☘️
Please never forget the ultimate sacrifice
1st July 36th ulster Division 🧡💙💜 Loyalist Edinburgh
as a true englishman and a grandson of 2 tommies, i salute ulster but there has been much english blood spilt on ulaters soil...
Yes more English tommies died but the English population was a lot bigger than Ulster's and it was the working class across Britain who paid the price Lions led by donkies political donkies.
Do not forget all those Many Thousands who fought in both World Wars from Eire .
Young men that fought for the false promise of a better stronger Ulster for their kin , strength through unity
No - more Irish Catholics than Irish Protestants served in both wars. You should look into this. Over 200,000 Irish from the South in WW1 and 60,000 in WW2 - more than you in the North. Yes their contribution was ignored until very recently but this is also changing for the better.
That would probably be because irish catholics out number irish protestants vastly
More Irish Catholics fought for the Germans than protestants did...
the way of the Empire....Canadians, Aussies,New Zealanders gave up lives as well for WHAT?
I'll tell you for what
To put the kraut menace down once again.
One of the greatest things the empire did for the world, along with abolishing slavery and the industrial revolution.
And I'd sign up to do it again in a heartbeat.
My Grandfather, his Brother and two of his Brothers in Law died on the Somme, They were English, I would suggest that far more English died during the war, that is not to take away the bravery of those Irishmen who did fight, wherever they were from.
history ,heritage, passion, remember the Ulster Volunteers.
True words spoken by a wise man
@12ydder A big thank you - when I searched for the lyrics many of them contradicted one another.
Another July 1st 🇬🇧🏴🇬🇧 never forget. Never surrender!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone fought for there own country and came together for UK
"Sold away by those they fought to save"...
Was it not James Craig, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, who convinced the British Government to abandon their plans for a 9-County Northern Ireland (I.e. All of Ulster), and go with the current 6-Counties; so that there would be a unionist majority in NI?
Shhhh, doesn't fit their agenda
My great-grandfather was in the 10th Division during World War I. He joined the Tans after the war and ended up fighting on the pro-Treaty side in the civil war.
Britain should remember what the BRAVE Men of the UVF Did for King and Country RIP No Surrender
Not Britain should remember’ the Scots should their the traitors of these Isles as always we’re🇬🇬🙏🏻✝️🏴🌹
Not england, but Britain, Scottish and proud British and proud,my father and his father before him fought for this country.
It's the same when 2nd world war broke out ,the tarriers, couldn't get back to erie quick enough ,plus were entitled 2- pensions for great Britain and tottie picking erie I rest my case remember the cry was no surrender, yours SIR SOUNESS LOYALIST
We are British
English working class lads died on that Battlefield as well. The British government were to blame i.e English Welsh Scottish and Irish
Brave young men. Lest we forget
Sorry Ulster, from a supporter in South East England
dont blame the english for us losing the countys! lisen to the song which is the truth.. it was early yrs of ww1 we were in the dark an far away from old belfast.. an off we were sent to flanders feilds... weird that.. dublin just had to wait an pick 1916 when thousands of Ulster volenteers were fighting in france and scotish english welsh... easter riseing in dublin 1916 should be put in the biggest book of cowards.. 👎
Edd Ryan ,1.5 million irish starved to death by the glorious empire ,meanwhile what food was produced was sent across thr erin sea to feed the english theives.
Edd Ryan The Irish fought bravely in world war 1 250,000 went to fight
This song is not directed towards ordinary English people, but UK Governments who sold out the British people of Northern Ireland.
God bless the all loyal Protestants & Orangemen 💙
This song is about WW1 which is why ive stuck to commenting on WW1.The many southern Irish in WW1 have not had any of the respect they deserve especially from their own people.do you agree then that Carson gave up the 3 counties and they werent "sold" by England ???
It’s American pressure over the last 100 yrs on the assumption that northern Ireland is an occupied territory when on reality it’s a self determined province….respect to all Ulster men ….
@Boru1968 are you named after the irish hero brian boru from munster??
bang on my dad was a rifle man! and yes the 36th ulster division were the only ones to gain ground! but they were all sold out to fight a bs war while the high and mighty sat back home in blighty drinking tea a bit like today
⬆️ Instigator bot detected⬆️
Betrayed again 17th June 2021. Thank heaven Edwin Poots is out. 🇬🇧
R.I.P. BIG MAN. For God and Ulster!
Its actually the red hand commando. Get it right.
the south also helped as my grandfather did i am cosin of div i wish only truth
Dalriata now known as Ulster ,it has always been an independent people and nation ,long may it continue.
Thank the DUP for the treachery bestowed on this nation with Brexit and covid these men must never be forgotten by the British God bless them all
Brexit covid ?
@tullyDT How does Home Rule work when you have thousands of heavily armed loyalist Protestants marching through the Streets of Belfast opposing it in 1912 and the British Army Officer saying they won't enforce the Home Rule Law? There was never going to be Home Rule, and the British Government was never going to implement that law.
What would they thing now
🏴🇬🇧🏴
Ulster will Always be British
The Irish and the English have been inextricably linked over many centuries of blood and sacrifice. Many commanders at the top level of the armed services and politics have blood origins in Ireland - think of The Duke of Wellington and others. Irish officers have thus commanded the English as well as vice versa. The Irish Guards and others still bring pride to themselves and the armed forces of which they are honoured and admired members..
and the UK armed services.
this is heart breaking war is horrible for all sides anyway rule britania heart of midlothian man city
No Surrender!
what you saying , englands decision ?? last time i looked it was the british government with both scots, welsh and northern irish MPs sitting , the british government couldnt win either way, home rule was on the books during victorian times , each time thrown out by ulster protestants and unionist mps,,after ww1 , the unionists threatened revolt and all out civil war , so ulster was partitioned to save a greater civil war breaking out ,,in 69 the british army went in to prevent all out violence
did you not hear the tarriers against Cardiff? they were singing about the soliders getting killed in Afghanistan
Flanders is hundreds of miles from the Somme! Also would be interesting to see your "Great Uncle's - so great you cannot bear to say his name - grave.
@12ydder the words are was the old red hand of ulster with its shamrocks they numbered 9
Anybody know who sang this?
That was a long time ago, we've all had the time to recognise that the Englishmen referred to in that song, are the Sires of the treacherous dogs that are betraying us now.
But thanks to the internet, the game's up for that lot very soon.
The Shamrocks were numbered Nine, to represent ever county, apart from that it's a great video.
Why would Carson join the Unionist Party if he were against the forming of Northern Ireland ?
Lloyd George was PM then and he was Welsh
