- Brand New Specialized Stumpjumper | Bike Testing
We took the new Stumperjumper 15 out for some test runs in Le Carroz to get it dialled in for race week.
Had a good session on the bike and came out with some surprising results.
Thanks Specialized for developing an epic new ride and thanks TP for getting it in tune.
The video we all been waiting for 🍿 🎥
Thanks for that real open and interesting insight
Glad you liked it
What I’ve been waiting for 🔥
Glad to help
Heyyy, I'm so happy to be in your video !!
Nice to meet you bro!
I got to give a shout out to the mechanic! If it wasn't for great mechanics, and trail builders we wouldn't get the most fun out of our rides 🤙
Very true!
Thank you! Haven’t even watched yet but this is what I want to see!!
I would think a Vivid with HBO would be better than the Genie. Two separately tuned circuits. I think the Genie is sick, but frankly it just seems like a cheaper, simpler way to get bottom out protection with less weight and complexity than HBO. This will appeal to more Stumpjumper fans than Evo fans. New Enduro will be out soon after enduro season ends and prospective Evo buyers will be enticed by the bigger bike while the Stumpjumper (non-Evo) fans will be glad the bike is this capable with the lighter weight of the Genie. And people who like to use the bike for everything, still can.
Any information on the new Enduro? They released the prior generation in September - perhaps the same this year?
Great insight, I prefer the SDLX than the Vivid but that could be a good option for most people. I just really like the supportive mid stroke I get with the SDLX
I think the new Enduro will be enticing for EVO owners that have maxed their EVO out.
I'm running mixed wheel, WRP yoke, Cascade link, Medium + shim tune w/ 1.0 spacer, Fox 38 w/ E-Tuned, and 5DEV 155mm cranks. It's definitely capable.
I'm hoping Specialized amps up the Enduro with the adjustability and modification/ aftermarket that the EVO has. To me the EVO is Trail/Enduro. Hopefully they make the Enduro to be Enduro/Downhill adjustable.
Awesome to watch the process of a pro testing.
Have you tried ochain on stumpy evo or the new one ?
Haven't ever tried the O-Chain but we've got one in the box we need to test
This is the bike we all are waiting for 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for this comparison! I would be stoked to hear your thoughts about the new Genie shock for this bike. How would you describe the difference between it and the one you are currently riding? Also, I saw some builds with the Vivid shock, which also looks pretty interesting. What do you think about that?
he won't test a fox shock when he is sponsored by rockshox.
All the more reason to test the Fox shock if youre sponsored by Rockshox. If the Fox is better just cover it up like they do with tyres
That was a cool overview. Between very competitive race results and the cool ambassador and general scene content you provide as a fan I’m stoked! I hope Specialized appreciate all the effort too!!!
I may have missed it but I assume you are running 160mm fork in the Stumpjumper 15?
I’ve always thought a short travel and long travel bike are a good quiver (if not needed) but more and more short travel bikes are getting increasingly capable and long travel bikes more efficient.
Yes in a recent video he told us that hes running it with an 160mm fork.
Thanks, glad you liked it! Yep 160mm Fork! Short travel bikes go good
Out of curiosity, do you remove a volume spacer(s) from the progressive air can compared to what you have in the linear air can? I found after getting the same sag with higher pressure on the megneg, I had to balance the feel of the larger negative chamber with a larger positive chamber (less positive volume spacers). Might be something to try if you haven't yet
Yep we did sometimes remove a spacer or two from the progressive can but I prefer the linear can anyway as I need the extra mid stroke support that it gives me
I’m running 3 tokens in both progressive and linear cans btw
Loved this format of bike analysis and setup Chuck! Obviously youre going to be a bit biased but i'm sure the new stumpy shreds. Can you notice an obvious difference in the way the new XL (linear) air can rides compared to the standard can? Where do you feel its benefits the most? Last question, might be more for you mechanic, but how intuitive and effective is that new Motion Instruments DAQ system?? Would you recommend it to a weekend warrior who loves to always be searching for optimal setups in their suspension?? Thanks for the sick content and stoked on the season your having! Finish strong my dude!! CHEERS!
The new Motion IQ system seems pretty good, easy to set up and pretty accurate.
I could definetley notice a difference between the XL and the Linear or Progressive Can. XL can felt good but was a bit less supportive on repetitive hits at race pace
What pedals are you running?
What your opinion between the linear and progressive air can ? ( not the XL) ,thanks
Do you also try the vivid air?
Yep! Tried another time and prefer the feeling of the SDLX
Hey there,
I'm curious about your bike setup. How much PSI do you run in your front and rear tires? Also, what's your air pressure in the shock and fork? Lastly, what rebound settings do you use?
Thanks!
I would love to know what your settings were while on the progressive air can? Your base settings were very close for me, so also I would like to hear more information on why the linear air can? Also can you put a UHD on the Stumpy 15?
Whats a UHD? Settings are 175psi, middle HSC, -1 LSC and 5 rebound from closed
@@ChazmaztvI think he meant UDH, universal derailler hanger.
chaz-man how are you!? thanks as always to share yours opinions and feelings on the bike!!!
Mate what chainrings do you usually use to train or race? 32t 34t? what about the offset? 6 mm, 3mm...0mm maybe? Do you have problems with chainstay? thank you so much!! CHEERS!
Always run a 34t chainring with 3mm offset!
@@Chazmaztv thanks bro!! You are the best!
It's good to see this kind of feedback from you on such a "moderate" bike! Trail bikes have really gotten so good! Also, lowkey awaiting the public release of the Lyrik Ultimate in Electric Red now that the Zeb is out!!
I think it’s abt a year
suprised not testing the vivid? i heard they are great ? not great at 150?
how much noticable difference is in charger 3.1 compared to 3
the 3.1 just gives more range for light and heavy riders.
I mean, understand sponsors but without the Fox Custom tuned shock. The test isn't really relatable to the version i would buy. All the hype is around the shock.
Well he likes the linear air can version of his shock, and the speci shock is even more linear than that. He says in the video he can accept the bottom out on the linear because it’s overall smoother. The genie will give the feel he likes without the bottom out! I know this is deduction and not hard data but the concepts are there and I haven’t talked to anyone who has tried the genie and not LOVED it
Hold up. Isnt it just him testing for his future race bike and how it compares to his current race bike. This isn’t a product review for the general public. I mean this is a racers channel not pinkbike
I might be wrong about that so someone please feel free to correct me
@@hectorhernandez1664 Exactly.
@@LoamMTBSlide haters said that the new stumpy 15 is too linear. That Charlie likes it better means that the frame is still rad with or without genie tech
Im buliding this bike, they sell that frame. Way cooler than the bronze lol.
tried it pre launch - the genie is sick but the color schemes available are so meh
You have the Stumpy 15 set up mullet or 29er?
Full 29er
The EVO is full 29 as well?
my first mountain bike was a 1987 Stumpjumper.....
From a racer's perspective, I'm surprised you'd find a preference for the Stumpy 15 vs. the current EVO model, especially if you are not able (because of sponsorship) to use the Genie shock. You're basically "giving away" a little bit of travel, while also running significantly less leverage rate with similar ending rate (2.49) between the two. If you aren't going to use a larger volume shock, you're presumably giving up quite a bit of small/midsize bump sensitivity and traction as the Stumpy 15 has way lower leverage throughout all of travel. The 15 was basically built specifically for that Fox Genie shock, or a large volume shock with HBO.
Very interesting perspective, I thought similar to you when looking at the curves but when I started riding it I was super impressed with the performance under a normal shock and actually preferred the linear air can on the SDLX over both the Vivid and the new XL SDLX can. Don't ask me why just preferred the feeling. Also worth noting my riding style is quite unique so that could be why I'm enjoying the normal SDLX
@@Chazmaztv That's great insight. Do you mind sharing more details about your riding style? I also count my own style as a bit unique, and it helps if I am considering the Stumpy vs. the upcoming new Enduro!
I don't think the Genie is as important as they try and make it. They also sell a version with 160 Ohlins fork and coil shock which I think I might prefer.
@@brian6speed Perhaps, but the new stumpy has a very different leverage ratio curve than what Specialized and lots of other bike companies will engineer into their frames. This was said to be done specifically because the Genie shock was well suited to a much lower leverage ratio for the first 60-70% of travel than most bikes...
Why don’t you ride the enduro?
Guessing probably for the same reason he's not using the Genie shock: sponsored by SRAM/RS and they'd want their riders on Transmission.
He did testing last year back to back with sj evo and enduro. There are videos of it.
@@Gnougattenduro is still specialized bike so sponsorship isn't reason.
@@brian6speed Enduro doesn't have a UDH, can't run T-type
Enduro really is more of big mountain or Whistler park bike, too long in 29” setup although somewhat better with mullet link. Much more suitable for flat out straight tracks. SJ evo and I guess new SJ15 are much better bikes in tighter tracks and steep tight dropping corners as they are much more agile, also I am assuming the 29er is generally better rolling and pedaling for most of the enduro circuit so the stumpy is much better suited to this type of racing. Charlie also mentioned he liked the flex characteristics of the small fork in a previous video
Camera should show the bike and how it moves during the ride, not the top of the helmet
Why not the new roval traverse hd
I train on the HD, such a good wheel. Racing on a new alloy version of the Traverse at the moment!
Everyone knows the Evo was the bad boy. The brawler. The mountain crusher. Destroyer of worlds. Now we get “meh”. Sorry Fuel EX is cooler now.
Can you review dartmoor rocbird enduro frame thanks
Greetings from Philippines
My friend, this isnt a review channel. He is a professional enduro world cup racer who rides for Specialized. 😅
Could he still..? I mean..? XDd
Like you were going to tell the us the new bike sucks. I'll ride last year's Stumpy. Spesh would not like.
Sweet carbon Meta V5 you've got there 😉
I'll boycott that frame just due to no rear derailleur cable routing.
Why would you put a worse rear derailleur on it? It comes with axs. Don't be stupid
@@Tancam17 First of it's not better and Sram sucks
@padraicbateman you have very clearly not used the new sram transmission, so I will forgive your ignorance 😂
@@Tancam17you realize you can buy it frame only right? And mountain bikers rarely leave bikes as built, and have preferences. I’ve owned axs setups and ridden transmission and they’re not all they’re cracked up to be. Heavy, you have to charge them, and shift more slowly than a cable setup. I’ll keep my shimano setup and enjoy thank you very much.
@@padraicbatemanyep. Garbage.
No
The Evo would have to win downhill. People race Enduro on it. But for trail riding the new one is probably a little more reasonable.
Chaz is in 3rd place in the UCI Enduro World Cup on the Stumpy 15. Seems like people "race enduro" on the Stumpy 15 too
The differences here are poorly communicated.
He is a racer not a PR guy
And this isnt a review. He shares his test session between the old and the new frame. Listen to what he says and look at the numbers.
Thank you @roddas26 !!
Glad you understand, was a pleasure to share an insight into how we test and set up a new bike!
