  • You guys really enjoyed the reptile version, so today we're going to be looking at how PetSmart and Petco take care of their small animals. Of course all locations are different, but in general I feel like these stores are a good representation of most that I've been to. Which one do you think had the better care?

There's a guinea pig rescue in Texas and I got mine from there and the cages are really big. I think pet stores should make their cages bigger. Like if you agree.

As a former Petco employee, I can at least give a little insight into how it operates. They sell a lot of small animals. At any given time, the average time an animal will stay in one of those cages is a week. If somebody hasn't bought an animal in over 2 weeks, it usually gets discounted or put up for adoption (with an exception for small parrots like conures and cockatiels who will be in a cage for up to 6 months before being discounted). I adopted out many animals (for free) during my time there. Even fish. Remember to ask if they have any animals for adoption before paying full price! Animal cages are spot cleaned daily in the morning and at night and there is an animal check once an hour (which doesn't always happen). Whenever you're in a petco and you hear the birds chirping or kittens meowing on the speaker, that's the signal for an animal check. Most employees do the animal check but you'll always get those one or two who ignore it. All animals are given fresh food in the morning including greens, cabbage, and fruit. The store I worked at went to the local grocery store 3 times a week for fresh produce. We provided apples, oranges, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, cabbage, mustard greens, dandelion, and kale each morning. Fish are fed once in the morning. Reptiles are fed morning and night. Those that need misting should be misted whenever needed, but that doesn't always happen. Birds are fed morning and night and water changed at least twice a day. Their cages are deep cleaned once a week and spot cleaned daily. Each store has a health recovery room for sick animals. Any animal found sick or needing medical attention is sent to a local vet who works with the store. The store will pay whatever cost to save the animal if its saveable. The animals in the health recovery room are given extra attention. Everything gets logged, animals generally have their own space to recover, and the climate is controlled. Overall, the care is great IF employees are doing it correctly. That is where the problem lies. It takes just one idiot to cause an animal to get sick or die. One shift of not giving an animal water or properly caring for them. That is where Petco needs to step it up. Better employee structure to make sure there is always someone available to make those checks and clean those cages. Many times there were only 2 people opening up a store and nobody else coming in for 3 or 4 hours after we opened. Most employees want to do the animals right and give them all the attention they need but with a constant line of people at the register and only one other person to help customers, that makes it incredibly difficult. That is unacceptable.

I know this was 2 months ago but this person is very much so right. As a Petco employee I actually agree with everything they said. My manager even gave us a meeting saying look animals and guest come first. You gotta look at it that way. She always makes sure we are looking at the cages and keep an eye on them but again it takes one person to really screw it up. People who work there are very ignorant and dont care to do research but there is some people who really take the time and effort to do research. I just think if you're going to sell an animal be knowledgeable of the animal. I remember I stopped this lady from buying 2 hamsters and I told her a couple of websites she can look at to do some research. Petco managers and employees need to really step it up tbh

I work at a C store and it's very common for an animal to be in our care for months. I've been there 8 months and only once was an animal's price reduced due to duration of stay (iguana, there for over a year).
Completely understand your statement in an A store though.

    • @laurab4257
      @laurab4257 5 років тому +14

@@taurus7911 It's possible he was a customer surrender. Petco is typically supposed to adopt out customer surrenders, but occasionally they will just sell them. It's also possible he was at the store for 8 months or so. I've had hamsters hang around in the store I work at for months. 8 months seems like a stretch but I suppose it's possible.

Here's what i took away with this video and what i've seen from my local stores as well.
PETCO: Cleaner cages but smaller cages for their animals. The hamster wheel size was fine for now because they use saucers and all hamsters from petco/petsmart come in at 6 weeks of age on average and saucers are a bit easier to keep propped up, easier to not bend the hamsters back in such a way that it begins to hurt. They had their animals easier to view and looks like someone recently cleaned or else does their hourly checks to make sure everything is looking good. Food bowls were filled and unfortunately both petco/petsmart only have a dish to store their hay in instead of a big pile of hay. Unfortunately Petco/petsmart call these enclosures "Displays" because they want you to buy their animals. They don't care about the animals welbeing,. Petco/petsmart isn't allowed to add more than 1/2 inch of bedding to enclosures or the employees get in trouble. It seriously stinks for these poor animals that they're treated as accessories/toys/things.
PETSMART: Their cages are much bigger but they're quite deep which makes it harder to view the animals. The food bowls were empty but it's probably due to 4 G-pigs eating all the hay and the store is only suppose to supply a tiny small bowl for them at a time. But the enclosures were all a mess and their wheels were all different for the hamsters. We got the mesh wheels which is a NO NO, we got the saucers and then the silent spinners. Unfortunately the wheel was knocked over in one and i've personally noticed with petsmart that they don't do hourly checks OR they don't care to maintain it. My petsmart lacks severely on the small animal department and i've seen multiple wheels knocked over, chew toys not present, etc! It's not good. No wonder my petsmart rarely sells their small animals. Petco wins in my opinion due to how appealing the enclosures look and how often they're checked up on and how quickly their hamsters/small animals get bought. But i hate how lacking the items for sale are at petco and will always go to petsmart for their big assortment of chews and hides and bedding.

I’m torn… Because in the Petsmart the animals that needed hay didn’t have any, but at the Petco the rats had no stimulation and rats are like some of the most intelligent animals… And also the brand of food that the rats are being fed is known to kill rats.
But all in all I’d say the Petco was better because at least they provided hay for the animals that needed it.
But on the other side I think That both of them were terrible because none of the animals got any stimulation at all like, no toys, no chews, etc. etc.

So for short-term living conditions they are abusive or anything but i agree for long-term situations they arent acceptable.

But what happens is that people who buy animals on a whim and aren’t informed think that the pet store cages are ok. Also no stimulation causes stress and that’s not good for any animal. Also also, many animals life for months, if not their whole lives, in these cages. Coming back to my first point, misinformed people will make it so that even if these animals stay in the small pet store cages for a few days, they will be spending there whole lives in these conditions because the people didn’t do their research.

The torture continues for the poor animals bc of people who don’t do research. I want to point out when I got a hamster I was mindless and didn’t do research and my hamster died in one of those plastic balls from lack of ventilation. Holly Sanford they are most certainly not 'wayyy overpriced'. They arent a product but a LIFE. The prices should be even higher so people are detered from buying them and caring for them improperly.... birds are not easy pets, and i do not recommend them. An extremely intelligent creature that should live no less than 15 years (for parakeets, others can live to 80) should not be shoved in a tiny cage and fed only seed.

Well, if you want to get in statistical mesures, read this:
    Food Quality:
    Petco: some Kaytee Lab Block
PetSmart: Oxbow and random mouse food
    PetSmart 1:0
    Water: Tie. 2:1
    Wheels:
    Petco: small flying saucer
PetSmart: small/bare min flying saucer, small silent spinner, decent sized mesh wheel.
    PetSmart 3:1
    Cages/Size:
Petco: small cage, not enough ventilation for ferrets and rats. Decent sized mouse cage.
PetSmart: small cages (no rats and ferrets)
    Petco + .5 ( 3 : 1.5)
    Accessories: Both loose, bare cages.

It totally and solely depends on the employees, managers, individual store, region and regional managers as to the care that the animals actually receive. Both corporations have strict rules to follow, however any individual, ANYONE working for either corporation can abuse and neglect their responsibilities/power.
Now if we get down to what actual rules/codes each corporation has put in place in caring for the animals, there are clear differences. But whether those rules are even carried out properly completely depends on each individual person working at the time, in every position all of the way up.
I will say that for both corporations and any corporation selling animals, profit comes first. They will always put the profit above the care. Thats how business works and that’s why I’ll never support them. Something big to remember.
I speak as an animal educator who has indeed worked in these pet corporations and what I learned I was completely let down by. The general public has no idea how bad it is.
Some individuals really care and do a great job with the animals, others are just working to make money and couldn’t care less about the fact that animals depend on them to survive.

Anyway I do wonder how they think sometimes. Like I just trimmed the Peruvian. Sometimes I think my older one, Whiskers, the American breed, looks at him in amusement. W/ lots of things. I know he takes notice. But he must look at the Peruvian, Axl, like ,"🤭 no offense. But you needed that hair cut! You stank sometimes. Poor youngen. He sure does have alotta hair 🤔. Heh, sometimes I can see his hiney. Sometimes that dude has bangs in his face, mohawks, all kinds of stuff. Can't blame him tho. That looks like alotta grooming."

I don’t care how late I am I just want to say your petsmart is sooo much better then mine. They feed the animals about 4 times a week and not on weekends. They use the smallest size of mesh wheels for all their animals. They have a tiny mesh wheel in the guinea pig cage like they can run on it when they don’t need wheels. Also they keep around 3 piggies at a time in the tiny hamster cages. One time I saw a hamster fight that was very bad and I told and employee so they could unlock he cage and separate them. They came at the slowest pace they could go and saw them and said just let them battle it out it’s fun to watch. ONE OF THE HAMSTERS IN THAT FIGHT LOST A LEG!! They didn’t care at all. A person who works for a animal cruelty investigation said they would handle it and help the animals.

Hi, I honestly liked that Petsmart was using better wheels for their small critters. Their food looked like a better quality, I just can't be sure about that, just going off looks. I noticed Petco had more bedding in the tanks though, but down side, they also has many more critters per tank 😢. Kinda 6 in one hand, half dozen in the other. I'd probably have to go with Petsmart on this one. Thanks, as always, for you fantastic videos.👍🏻👍🏻💖

The petsmart in my area is amazing it has HUGE tanks for the animals there and there all pervaded with the appropriate size wheel and silent spinners and tell people not to buy the critter trail cages not saying that’s worth anything but from the surface it looks like they take good care of the pets but you never know what goes on behind the scenes..
Between those pet stores I think petco wins since it seems to give the hamsters the correct wheels and the cages look cleaner and the pets are in better condition

I was talking with a friend's mom the other day (who happens to be a vet) and she told me to be careful when shopping at Petco. Where she works, practically every day they get different pets from Petco in their office, with infections and diseases ALL THE TIME, while our local PetSmart hardly ever sends it's small animals there. Honestly she just thinks it's where Petco gets it's animals from that's to blame, but all the same, its just safer where I live to go to PetSmart.

    • @kaleighjocosplaygaming9331

They get taken to the vet every which way because its better to bring them to the vet and get the care before pawning it off on an unsuspecting buyer to deal with.
Drove an hour for a 25 min drive on a snowstorm for a mouse to go to the vet. I dunno I just dont think petsmart would do that.
Petsmart should actually take their sick animals to the vet. Petco animals are seen within 24 hours, and then put on a special care plan until they are well again. You'll never get sold a sick animal, because they arent allowed on the floor. And if a mistake has happened where an employee didnt notice the onset of a sickness, you can bring your animal back for a full refund and we will bring it to the vet.

Personally, I would choose PetSmart. The PetCo I go to kinda sucks. First of all, their ferret area is right next to the hamsters, and I can tell the employees don't clean their enclosures very well. When I go to the hamsters, I can smell ferret poop. PetSmart is better in my opinion because they have colored Carefresh bedding, while my PetCo has only natural. My PetCo has more chews like bendy bridges, but my PetSmart doesn't. I'm sad that I live in AK, because here you can only have Syrians, not dwarfs.

My dog and I paid a visit to our local Petsmart today to pick up some more chew toys for both him and my hamster. Most Syrians had 6.5in wheels, but I noticed at least one with a 4ish inch wheel! I don't think the proper size would fit in the little tanks they have hamsters in, but at least try and give them a 6.5incher! I saw my little guy's brothers there as well, Campbell's dwarfs. All sleeping, but very cute just like their brother. He's my first hamster, bought at Petsmart. After watching so many videos from you and Munchie I'll definitely look into adoption when I get another. I'm all for adoption of cats and dogs and would love to start supporting small animal adoption as well!
