  • The sitcom "I Love Lucy," starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, was a ratings powerhouse in the 1950s, and a perpetual hit in reruns ever since. To mark the series' 70th anniversary, correspondent Jim Axelrod looks back at the making of a TV classic. He talks with granddaughter Kate Luckinbill, head of creative direction at the production company Desilu; visits the Lucy-Desi Museum and the National Comedy Center, both in Ball's hometown of Jamestown, N.Y.; and sits down with Darin Strauss, author of "The Queen of Tuesday," a novel inspired by Ball.

1984 - I vividly remember as if it just happened, driving on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles and making a stop at the Doheny intersection street light, border of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. Before the light changed I look left and saw Lucy driving a navy blue Rolls Royce. I screamed, "I LOVE YOU LUCY", she looked directly at me and said, "I LOVE YOU TOO!" ..... One of those moments in life you will always remember. It was magic.

So very true. My mom and I traveled to Jamestown NY to attend the birthday festival weekend in 2006. We even stayed an extra day. Even the weather cooperated the whole weekend and extra day. At that time. RIC WYMAN was executive director. He was so very kind to myself and my elderly mom. It was a very special mother daughter weekend with very fond memories. I am so glad I came across the report by Jim. At the beginning I thought I would need to mention Jamestown. So happy Jim was able to travel there and share his experience. I live in upstate NY, about 30 minutes from the ⚾️ Hall of Fame. The area is beautiful, especially in autumn!!! I ❤ Lucy🙂

Lucy greenlighted "Star Trek", "Mission Impossible", "The Untouchables" and "The Twilight Zone"! She may have disliked running a studio, but she was an absolute genius at it while she did so. She and Desi were pioneers and true visionaries...yet another reason why they were so compatible, and so much in love.

I still Love Lucy and I'm 78. I considered the show The Fabulous Four. Never loved a show like that in my life - and continued to see Lucy's two next shows: The Lucy Show, which won two Emmys 1967 & 1968. Also since revisiting the I Love Lucy Show - looked into her movies before and after - loved about 20 of her movies. She was so good. I am glad that she did not become an A list actress - she would not have come to tv and we would have all lost out.

In a 1990s TV talk show, the TV host brought up the subject of rerun residuals with Meadows, where she (somewhat) embarrassingly admitted that she profited more from the residuals of The Honeymooners than Jackie Gleason did. In that same interview, she said what worked in her financial favor was having brothers that were attorneys at the time (the 1950s); where they suggested to her of financial conditions to be negotiated when drawing up her contract for the TV series.
Negotiating for rerun residuals was unheard of at that time, as TV was still relatively new; with TV networks annually cranking out new TV show products. (in the minds of 1950s TV executives) TV reruns? What for?

I was born in the '50s and never stopped watching "I Love Lucy" for at least the next twenty years no matter how many times I had seen each individual episode reruned. But I do remember when I was single digits that it first seemed odd the husband of the Very American White Lucy was a swarthy man with an accent south of the border. We did not see that any where else on television or in the Jewish Italian neighborhood we grew up in, and it struck us kids as different yes and a bit odd, but it took no time at all for us to accept it with no issues, without a shrug. Lucy & Ricky as a couple were fun and funny and got along better than most of our parents and nobody else in the show gave it notice neither. It took five minutes to accept it as normal and not care.
Also - from a grade school kid perspective - the fact that Lucy & Desi were married in real life, underscored "tolerant" perspective. And we all at 5, 6, 7, 8 got it that Lucy/Desi were movie stars in real life. I mean they would show up in early movies we'd see, for the love of mike. Clearly we knew they were professional actors playing in funny situations with neighbors unlike any on our block. We got it. This was television and it was comedy with outlandish situations and not the life what we were living. And not the only show like that on the air, e.g. "I Married Joan", "Life of Riley", "Love That Bob", et cetera. We never thought our mothers had to get permission to buy a hat. (My father once referenced to that.) Another world. We were hip.
The only thing that seemed totally plausible to us was that a Redhead and a Cuban can be married and it be fine.

I'm hoping at some point the full spectrum of Lucille Ball's will be presented. One of Lucy's problems that remains to this day is the success of 'Love Lucy'. Its been a wonderful thing, but its also been a bad thing in the sense that it has nearly completely overshadowed her great work on 'The Lucy Show' and 'Here's Lucy, from 1962''68 and '68-'74 respectively. These were great series also, and don't get the credit and respect they deserve. Truthfully this is disrespectful to Lucy and her crew of talented writers, directors producers and more. Mostly it's disrespectful to Lucy for "never having heard" of these shows, or "never seeing" them. For a so-called Lucy fan to say that means they really aren't.
The Beatles had/have (to this day) the very similar problem of only being accepted as The Beatles, collectively, and NOT for their solo work. Again, I would say for those that don't, they're not true fans either. From that standpoint, the Beatles were both a good and bad thing for them as well.
