  • In this video, I teardown my first 5HP24A all wheel drive audi transmission. Compared to the 5HP24 in a bmw, some similar and some differences. I wanted to mention, at 7:10 in the video, i talk show a bearing. This bearing is very difficult to remove, it will most likely get ruined when it comes out. I managed to use a torx 40 extended socket to get the F drum out with out touching the bearing. There also is a bad open face bearing that was bad, this bearing should be changed on every overhaul, they go bad on the BMW units as well. Enjoy and thanks for watching

    14:15 the bolt is silver because it is a shorter bolt, compare to the black ones. It is silver colored to prevent a damage if you exchange it with a black one (the back to front axle is just close to this bolt, the ZF engineers have chosen to design this bolt shorter)

    Hi Gary.
    Which fluid would you recommend for servicing a functioning, high mileage, non rebuilt ZF5HP?
    ZF Lifeguard 5 or Redline D4 ATF?

    ALERT!! Stupid question coming up, Is it possible to assebly any of the ”clutch drums” inside the gearbox in a wrong way, like 180 degrees the wrong way or something like that?

    is there no needle bearing between the F drum and the Planetary drive III?? is it only turning on the 3 welding spots?

    I'm rebuilding my first one of these. 2004 behind a 4.2l. When removing diff from tranny my race and spacer fell out of the case. I noticed in your video yours did the same(later on in video it was lying on the table, got pushed towards oil collection). Also the race in the cover came loose while cleaning.
    Is this normal? Should the races not be fixed, or are they diffetent in this app.

    Oh i need this video so bad, this is literally the problem with my 01 a6 4.2 it won't go forward but aye got that reverse.

      If you have no forward but good reverse, dealing with clutch A problem, either bad drum or o-ring. Does it move cold and start to slip after a few minutes of driving?

      Gary Ferraro that was the case until I tried to climb a hill to get to the shop. It struggled to get up then went through all gears then into limp mode. I figured it was the a clutch pack drum or the valvebody, I remember I took it by a shop months prior to and the guy said the valvebody was going out.

    Hi Gary i have a question ? You say in the video, later will remove the pinion gear ... My question is how can i remove this pinion because what i see in the box, front side dont have a space to put it out the pinion or the pinion going outside from rear side of the gearbox?

      I actually did not remove the pinion, i ended up just leaving it in the case, i did not want to mess with the double seal

    Hello Gary!
    What is your opinion of a professional, what is the normal temperature of the transmission oil in 5hp24a?
    I want to prevent burnout in the summer on my A8 D2 Long!

      I would say around 200F, anything over 230 to me is to hot

    Hello Gary, thanks so much for sharing this video. I have this exact same 5HP24 to use as a parts transmission in Ohio. I also have a 5HP19 from an Audi A4 that I am trying to repair in Utah. The bronze bushing just inside the front pump is leaking fluid and I know that these bushings wear out or expand and leak ATF and only changing the rubber seal will not address the issue. Question for you: Do you know if the entire pump and torque converter input shafts from the 24 will fit into the 19 transmission case and function the same? That seems the easiest course of action. As a M.E. I realize commonality of many VW/AUDI parts is the most cost effective method for mass production however I am unsure if the 19 and 24 pumps are physically different in size and have the same dimensions or are interchangeable. Thank you sir.

      They are totally different, that will not work. The reason why the bushings spin out is because the converter clutch is no good. it goes metal to metal and then the particles adhere to the bushing until there is no more clearance between the hub and bushing, then the bushing will weld itself to the hub and spin out, make sure that converter gets changed

    Hey Gary thanks for the awesome videos,
    I have a question for you. On this particular transmission how exactly do you remove the "Pinion" for the differential? I have one and I'm struggling, there was one Torx retainer screw which I have already removed. But pinion still won't free up, Any advice? Suggestions? Also what service manual will you recommend for me on this ZF 5HP24 AUDI.
    I'll be hopefull and wait for a response.

      Last one i did was 2018, i don't think i removed the pinion, did you pull the back of the trans apart?

      @@GaryFerraro Yes I removed the back of the transmission completely.
      But after messing with it for a while I was able to figure out that there was a huge Snap Ring from underneath the pinion seal. You first have to pretty much destroy the rear pinion seal to get it extracted then remove the snap ring. Once that snap ring was removed I welded up a bolt and nut to get it on to my slide hammer then threaded onto the pinion, even still with the slide hammer took quite a few bangs with the slide hammer to get it out. What a pain 🤣

    Hi Gary great video, how much movement should be at the A drum shaft and the F drum shaft, by pushing in and out, when the Transmission is assembled again, thank you

      I honestly forgot the values, may be around .010 to .030
      This is checked by pulling up on the A drum

    is it Erickson's that you get the kit from? Also there was no oil baffle around the park gear and the rear inner seal is missing. Its hard to believe somebody could forget to put something that big? The entire Trans has been contaminated with rear gear fluid please advice fur the contamination problem? thanks you for all help!!!!!!!

      I get my kits from Transtar, if there is gear oil, get out what you can, maybe even loosen the vakvebody so most of the converter will drain. Fill it back up and service it a few more times, maybe once a week and all the gear fluid should come out

    Hey Gary, I have code p1738 pressure control solenoid C electrical on my bmw 4.4l that's intermittent and I'm wondering if this is in conjunction with my jerky downshifts coming to a stop. what would you recommend? thanks

      Before I changed my battery it would throw it upon startup every time after a heavy rainfall hit over the weekend. Now its only happening when the car is warmed up and on continuous stop and go traffic so I limited its driving.

      Rs6 2003. I found some specs saying 0,85 liters in the rear, and 1.30 in the front. Is that correct?

      Just looked on Shopkey Pro and it doesn't tell me but yes that sounds correct, pump in the fluid til it runs out the fill/check plug. same with the rear AWD section, amount sounds correct but fill til it runs out the fill/check plug

      Okey. Thank you. Now, after i put everything together, filled the transmission fluid, and absolutly everything is refitted, i got some issue, the trans does not want to shift to second gear, it revs up just like it will do it, but then instead just stops, slow the car down and put first gear back again. Do you have an idea? Did we possibly do something wrong with refilling the gearbox? Or something else. Appriciate any input.

      ok so as far as filling the trans, 1st fill engine off til it runs out, 2nd fill start the engine til it runs out. are you getting any codes by chance? speed sensors are plugged in?

    Where or how can I replace the pump gear of this 5hp24A S8 4.2 transmission? I tried to install it and I broke that part of the pump. I'm looking for help!

      I think this transmission is the same as the one in my BMW E39 540I My question is, I have a push during the second spare only at the first startup Lightly on the fourth gear, do I change the transmission fluid?
