Nice interesting interview. I remember when I went to go to one of Sensei Seagals seminars in Russia. He was such a nice and pleasant guy to speak to! It would be great to go train with him again.
I personally think weapons is what makes good Aikido. The majority of schools out there unfortunately don't focus enough on the them.

Sounds like I would love to meet Sensei Freeman. I grew up in South Florida as well, and had my own concerns about Aikido when I decided to pursue it. That’s when I came across Professor Philip Chenique’s schools of “Chendokan Aikido” and Atemi-Ryu Ju-Jitsu. He had similar goals for Aikido as Seagal. The dojo I trained at my specific Sensei made me take both Aikido and Ju-Jitsu. I actually wonder if Sensei Freeman knows Professor Chenique? Whether he deserves the hate or not I will always be grateful to Seagal for the inspiration I gained from him to seek out Aikido.

Moo Duk Kwan is not Tae Kwon Do. It's Tang Soo Do. When the different styles of Tang Soo Do broke off and Chuck Norris created his own organization (WTSDA/ American Karate), the founder of Tang Soo Do mister Hwang Kee created his own organization to which he gave the name of his style of Tang Soo Do which was Moo Duk Kwan (Tang Soo Do is like Karate. It's un umbrella term. Because in Karate you have Shotokan, Gojo Ryu, Kyokushin etc. That's how TSD is as well. And the founder of TSD called his style Moo Duk Kwan). But later he renamed his organization from Moo Duk Kwan to Soo Bahk Do. But people don't really call it Soo Bahk Do and continue to say it Moo Duk Kwan or just Tang Soo Do

@@williamsmith8790 There is a Taekwondo organisation that is called Moo Duk Kwan. But historically Moo Duk Kwan was the name of the style of Hwang Kee's TSD (or it was Soo Bahk Do and then named Moo Duk Kwan. Depending on where you search they will either say that his TSD style was named Moo Duk Kwan and he then changed it to Soo Bahk Do or that his TSD style was Soo Bahk Do and he then changed it to Moo Duk Kwan). So yeah. And from what I searched the Taekwondo Moo Duk Kwan organisation is even newer than WT and ITF (which were the first two organisations of Taekwondo). So once again historically Moo Duk Kwan is TSD. But who cares nowdays? Hwang Kee's Moo Duk Kwan is still referred to as TSD so no one really cares. I just gave some historical information that's all!

There are far, far better Aikidoka than him to be talking about. He talks about winning "secret" competition, which did not exist. The cast of the expendable basically said they wouldnt do the movies if Seagal was in them. he lied about knowing and fighting with Bruce Lee (he would have been 15, MAX!). Te cast and crew of Saturday night live still joke about Seagal's appearance saying he was the most narcissistic, idiots, bullying, creep person they ever had to be around. For context, I've been training Aikido for 30 years and Judo/Daito ryu and every time his name is mentioned I feel sick.

I'm only half-way your aikido journey (15y instead of 30) and I have spoken to several aikidoka who attended a Seagal aikido seminar (or trained for longer period of time with him); not a single one said anything negative about the style, intensity, behaviour etc on the tatami. Similar for e.g. Larry Reynosa. There are quite a few other aikido styles or masters that make me feel sick too though :) ; that SS lacks the humour or behaviour needed to excel in SNL, I can certainly believe! About his abuse of women: I've read the accounts of those on sites like wikipedia: it's almost all 'allegations' or lawsuits that got dropped/dismissed.. I don't think I've found any example of an actual conviction/ruling against him. Have you been on the tatami with SS yet?

26.10 -- looking back what a bully. Telling a guy who was sitting down to "go now". That student could have had any number of reasons why he was sitting down. You don't know what his mental/physical challenges or state of health was like. The fact is he got to the class. He made it. He could have been having a sudden excruciating anxiety attack, could have felt sick, just might not have felt well or whatever and then you get arrogant "macho boy" coming over with his huge ego telling you to go. That's not a "master" that's an insecure bully who's lets his ego get out of wack. Seagal should have gone over and asked if he was ok first? What did Seagal preach and I quote "First learn how to heal people to be great, to hurt people is easy", yet this guy couldn't take his own advice. I really wish Elliot could have given more details , i.e. was the student just fooling around. Just like the interview he (Seagal) did with Jesse, asking to sit down every couple of mins, I'd tell him to get up, keep standing and get some of that fat off him, if not, he can clear off and we will end the interview. Not very nice is it Seagal? Incidents like this are proof that, if you behave and act like a douche, eventually, it's inevitable your little inner circle that feeds your ego will collapse around you. And in Seagal's case, boy, it sure did.

    • @johndough8115

Nope. You have it all wrong. Long ago... I used to teach a few dudes, privately. If you tallied up the efforts and hours spent.. I was making less than Minimum wage... for that side-money. To me, it was more about trying to pass down what I had fought so hard to learn, discover, and Master. These guys showed interest.. and they did put in some efforts.. but... I quickly discovered that they were more interested in knowing the arts methods... than actually developing their abilities to become Combat capable...
At first, it would be things like them taking rests during our Workout routine... rather than keeping constant pace. Then when asked to punch the sandbag for 15 minutes... that after 5 minutes... they intentionally reduced their speed, and impact power.. by 90%.. as well as took breaks every few moments... rather than keeping in motion for the entire drill, as instructed. The last straw... was when I asked one of them to do a footwork drill, for 5 minutes. After less than 2 minutes... the dude slowly bends over to re-tie his shoes (and extremely slow at that). It was beyond obvious that he was trying to eat the clock down... because he didnt want to push himself any harder than a certain level.
He was lazy. He wasnt a hard worker. He lacked the proper levels of Passion, and Internal Willpower... to push himself to higher levels. None of them did any work outside of our classes... despite me constantly stressing the importance of it.
Now, Im a fanatic. I used to train anywhere from 4 hrs (minimum) to over 8hrs EVERY SINGLE DAY, 365 days a year (yup, even on Holidays). I knew that very few people would ever train as serious as myself... so I had tolerance for people being a bit less in output. But they were not even really putting in a FRACTION of what I used to put in. And at their pace, and their lack of intensity... it would have taken them 100 years to be anywhere Near what I was capable of... let alone, my hopeful goal... in making my students superior to myself.
It was at this point that I realized that I wasted a LOT of my personal time and energy, on those that didnt DESERVE my time and energy. On those that were never going to reach Combat level functionality... and whom would never be able to pass down what I was teaching. And so... I decided it just wasnt worth the extra side money, and quit teaching them.
Furthermore... When I used to train in these various different Schools... I was the dude whom.. when the teacher was talking, I was standing up in stance... doing a drill, that we had recently learned... where as the others, were sitting down, resting... doing nothing. Most of these students also never trained outside of classes... let alone, did the workouts on their own. In fact, many didnt even come to more than 2 classes per week... and the school offered both day and night classes... 4x a week. I had a lot of students get upset and Jealous with me... because I was always showing them up... and mastering things in a few weeks... that they still had not mastered, within a few years time.
The point being... that very few people are cut out to be combat capable... and Seagal, and even myself... we should not be wasting our time with Lazy people, that are not willing to push themselves to their limits. That are likely never going to be great in their performance / abilities. If they want to train as a "Casual", then they can find a massive school that operates based on large cash sums.. that doesnt care about the Quality of the students at all.

"He could have been having an anxiety attacks" - If that person is having an Anxiety attack during training... what makes you think they have the fortitude to go up against another high level fighter / Challenge ?!
"Could have felt sick" - My mother Forced me to go to school, no matter how sick I was. Unless I was Deathly Ill, and couldnt move... I was going to school. If you are in the Army, and you are Sick... Do you think they will allow you to rest and do nothing? What about, if you are in the middle of a War? Can you just sit the day out? Nope. What happens if you are attacked by a dude, while you are sick.. riding on the bus to your house? Do you think the attacker cares that you are Sick? If the dude was sick that he was unable to function well... he could have called in advance, to cancel his class. And if he became sick In class... he could have either sucked it up... OR... he could have Excused himself from class. I guarantee, that the dude was just being LAZY. The teacher can easily spot when someone isnt feeling well. It shows in their mannerisms / expressions, and their slowed and odd movements.
"Just might not have felt his best" - Again, what does this matter? Does the army care if you dont feel your best?! If they tell you to run 5 miles... and they set a timer on you... you are running that 5 miles, and staying within that timeframe... no matter how you feel. Does your place of Work care if you are feeling your best?! The Fed EX driver has to deliver a boatload of packages... and within a Set Schedule. The Boss doesnt care if you dont feel your BEST. You still have to WORK your best, despite how you FEEL. Again... if you are too sick to do your Job properly... you will have to call in sick... and the boss will put someone in your place, that can and will do the job to the best of their capabilities. And IF you are the kind of person that keeps calling in sick... and or, cant maintain your required production / Quotas... then the boss will REPLACE YOU. The boss does not care about your FEELINGS. The boss is REQUIED to provide a RELIABLE SERVICE. And if you have PROVEN that you cant be RELIABLE... then you are a LIABILITY to the Company.
There was one time that I sparred against a Masterclass level fighter. I was totally blown away, by what he was able to do. He knew about 7 Different arts. I begged him to teach me. He was a very Busy dude... but he found some time to dedicated some training time with me. At one point, he asked me to do a low horse stance. Me being trained in Wing Chun... I was used to doing High-Horse stances... not Low / Deep Horse stances. With high horse, I could hold that stance for an hour, without any fatigue. But that Low Horse? I could barely get past the 60 second marker. After 60 seconds... my legs were shaking, and on the verge of giving out... so I started to raise up out of the stance, for a partial break. This dude was TICKED. He went off on me, about me not pushing myself. I tried to tell him that my legs were giving out, and that I wasnt nearly as strong as him. But he wasnt having it...
When I got home, I reflected on the situation. I asked myself... "Could I have stood there for longer, without coming Up?"... and I realized, that I probably could have lasted a bit longer. But even so... I could have pushed myself until my legs actually buckled out from under me. Why didnt I ? Because I was not used to pushing myself to that extreme of a level. But I can tell you... that This dude was. And that is Exactly why he was Angered. I realized exactly why this dude Outclassed me by Leagues. Because his levels of Willpower, were much Greater than my own. He pushed harder, and he progressed faster and much farther.
After this Self Realization... I began to push myself to a much greater level. I stopped accepting mediocre results and even the smallest of Errors... were Drilled until corrected, down to within a few Millimeters of accuracy.
Realize again, that not everyone is Cut out to be Combat Capable. And those that sell you the Fantasy that you can be a part time "Practitioner"... and still be effective... they are telling you Exactly what you want to hear: But its a Lie.

The founder was both hard and soft... if you can be soft and effective it means you are at a higher level... Seagal's aikido is just aikido, but he's at a higher level because he trained hard, went to Japan, etc, etc... most aikido teachers do it as a hobby, not as a full time profession, most can't USE aikido vs let's say a BJJ world champion, for example... the real reason for this is because today's aikido came from the son of the founder of aikido and his friends but the founder of aikido didn't pass on the art of aikido to his son, he passed it on to a guy named Tohei... but Tohei let the family have the name so the founder's family would be financially provided for... so what we are learning today isn't the true lineage of aikido... not many realize this... but it's why most aikido doesn't work... there's more to it, because there's more to aikido than meets the eye, and yes it stems from Daito and the founder was actually teaching Daito, he only named it aikido so he wouldn't have to pay his teacher royalties, it's the same thing... but some things like aiki sage and aiki age are totally lost in modern aikido and the loss of these small details is why modern aikido has a bad reputation... but this is the traditional way... a real master never teaches his secrets.

Seagal's first four action films were definitely ground breaking and unsurpassed by any others.
Other action films were obsessed with high jump kicks, spinning kicks, ridiculous fight scenes.
The first four Seagal-Nasso production action films had fight scenes that perfectly blended realism, brutality and surreal.
Jesse the karate Nerd met with and did some classes with Seagal shihan in Dubai.
Everything Seagal shihan demonstrated is taught in traditional Okinawa Ryu Kara Te, Japanese Jujutsu and Daito Ryu. . . The punching style Seagal shihan teaches is taught in Okinawa iishin ryu Kara te, old English pugilism, old bareknuckle American fisticuffs and Wing Tsun.
Seagal shihan began in Kara Te, before training Aikido, Wing Tsun, Daito Ryu, koryu jujitsu, kenjutsu and FMA.
So it's no surprise that Seagal shihan incorporates a lot of Okinawan Kara te into his bujutsu of Tenshin Gakuen Bugei .
    Seagal shihan has real bujutsu.

Yeah I agree his fight scenes were done really well. They looked realistic and brutal arm and finger breaks. Always fun to rewatch those movies.
