Viren has a lot of demons and he embraces all of them.

Such a fitting song to such a deep and complex villain. Well done.
Lord Viren is one of my favourite villains, cause I love dark mages as well as I love greedy and insidious advisors. So it`s no surprise that Viren fulfills all my conditions. Although I`ve got to admit, that he believed in doing the right thing by protecting humanity. He has just chosen the wrong path and trusted the wrong man due to many great losses and humiliations he had experienced. He lost his wife Lissa, he helped saving 10.000 people from starvation without any kind of appreciation, he was humiliated by his closest friend king Harrow, who abused his power in order to show Viren "his place" and he even lost his friend, king Harrow, who was like a brother for him. Most of the time Viren`s actions might have been moraly questionable, but he has done it to serve a greater good in his eyes. But with Aaravos manipulating his mind he has become more and more greedy, cruel and ruthless. What once was an educated and wise advisor, a loyal friend, loving husband and a caring father has become a coldhearted tyrant with the desire and the purpose of conquering Xadia and ruling the world in order to "save" mankind.

Maybe the two-headed snake that Viren wanted to use in order to save King Harrow from the xadian assassin`s symbolizes Viren himself and his inner conflict throughout the entire show.
The snake could be used by the producers as some sort of symbol for Viren.
Just like the snake Viren has two faces.
Not just his physical appearance, that is, in fact, corrupted by dark magic, forcing him to disguise his true face by using the magic of butterflys.
But his character with all his qualities too.
In the prehistory of the show Viren is shown to be an ambitous and kindhearted man and a loyal friend and advisor.
By saving 10.000 innocent people from starvation, which couldn`t have been possible without his researches and his dark magic, he has proven to be a good person willing to even risk his own life to save others.
He wasn`t even willing to leave those two quens behind even though he wasn`t able to save them, which lead to the unfortunate death not just of two queens, but of three.
Regarding to the fact, that he was powerfull enough to slow Avizandum down buying some time for the queens, perhaps the two queens would have managed to get away from the dragon and to escape, if they hadn`t decided to attack (I guess they wanted to buy some time for their fellow allys to deliver the titan`s heart to the two human kingdoms in order to avoid starvation)
In season one he firstly appears as a wise advisor willing to do anything necessary to protect and save his king by all means.
Sacraficing the life of a guard may have been a bit cruel, but he had a purpose he believed in.
His first action that one might consider as "evil" was ordering his son Soren to secretly kill the princes, return without them and lying about their true fate as well as ordering his daughter Claudia to put the egg over the life of her brother (=his son) in order to get on the throne instead of prince Ezran.
Speaking about his motivs at this time confronts me with one question:
Has he done it to become the new king of Katolis so he can ensure and guaranty welfare and prosperity to his people or has he done it because of his great desire for power with the goal to gain more controll over the military being capable of leading his own crusade into Xadia like he did in season three?
The entire show he told to have done all those things to protect humanity and regarding to his heroic actions in the past I want to believe him.
But his great hunger for power, which could be fuled by the dark magic, could also be the reason.
It could have been both leading him to such actions.
It`s hard to say, but I think this is the case: The will to save his people as well as his greed.
We also get to see his true corrupted face at the end of season one with his pale skin and his threatening black eyes for the first time.
When he meets the powerful wizzard Aaravos in season two he starts turning into a real villain being supported by someone who finaly listens to him and who agrees with him, which makes him feel right.
He becomes more and more greedy without even noticing it.
I think the whole time he`s lying to himself by pretending to do such horrible things just to save mankind.
In the end he wasn`t the goodhearted person with strong moral principles he once was.
He has become such a great evil as he has seen in Xadia.
To be honest the Xadians have proven to be capable of cruelty as well as humanity by banishing them.
Viren had his reasons for revenge and vengeance, reasons Ezran and Caleb, the typical heroic protagonists, might have been to young to understand.
Which doesn´t mean I morally agree with all his actions.
But he has become the evil he actually wanted to fight.
His history is actually pretty sad.
He ends up being just another misunderstood villain, but as such he`s got really much potential.
I can`t wait for season four to come out.
