लौहार / कर्मार ( Lohaar / Karmaar ) - Blacksmith in India are keepers of traditional Knowledge Systems for generations and millenia.
This applied knowledge is transferred through skill aquisition and pain staking work through life. It is a specialisation among the various crafts of India.
Such knowledge is orally transmitted and due to apathy of the forthcoming generations is on the verge of diminishing. Farmers and Blacksmiths still have deep associations in pockets around India. They are around us but invisible! If the craft is lost, so is the knowledge with it.
Gram Disha Trust is endeavoring to script down this knowledge through the creation of a blacksmith scripture ( लौहार शास्त्र निर्माण ), so that the future generations may know of this valuable past. Afterall such knowledge and skill has flown free of incumbrance generation after generation, therefore it is our duty to ensure, at least, that it continues to flow forth.
Between May-Jul 2024, Gram Disha Trust undertook an Internship wth seven Interns from across India. This internship had a 10-day residential component at the Village Pangna, Tehsil Karsog, Himachal Pradesh. This film intends as a process repository of the method to develop the Shaastra.
On this 78th Year of Independence - Gram Disha Trust dedicates this Lauhaar Shaastra to the people of India. It is an experiment in participant observation, inquiry and discovery, rather than a declarative piece. If anything, it is worthy of being modified in future, and offers itself as a starting point to anyone who wishes to do so.
