Urban Exploration | Hotel Haludovo | Croatia

Ende der 1960er Jahre baute Jugoslawien seine Tourismusbranche massiv aus. Der aus dem heutigen Kroatien stammende Architekt Boris Magaš, bekannt für zahlreiche monumentale Bauten, wurde 1968 mit dem Projekt betraut, ein 25 Hektar grosses Grundstück auf einer Insel im adriatischen Meer mit einem Hotelkomplex, oder besser: einer "Hotelstadt" zu bebauen. Der Haludovo-Komplex entstand innerhalb von 4 Jahren und beinhaltete zwei Hotels, ein künstliches Fischerdorf mit Hafen, Schwimmbäder und Sportanlagen. Bereits kurz nach der Fertigstellung erfolgte nach einem Joint Venture mit einem US-Unternehmer der Umbau zu einem luxuriösem Glücksspiel-Resort für zahlungskräftige westliche Touristen. Zu Gast waren u.a. Saddam Hussein, Olof Palme und Silvio Berlusconi. Mit dem Zusammenbruch des Kommunismus und dem beginnenden Bürgerkrieg brach auch der Tourismus zusammen und die Gebäude dienten als Notunterkunft für Kriegsgeflüchtete. Nach der Privatisierung Ende der 1990er Jahre und dem Ausverkauf korrupter Geschäftsleute musste Haludovo 2002 schliessen.
At the end of the 1960s, Yugoslavia massively expanded its tourism industry. The croatian architect Boris Magaš, who is known for numerous monumental buildings, was entrusted with the project in 1968 to build a hotel complex, or rather a "hotel city", on a 25-hectare plot of land on an island in the Adriatic Sea. The Haludovo complex was built within 4 years and included two hotels, an artificial fishing village with a harbor, swimming pools and sports facilities. Shortly after its completion, a joint venture with a US entrepreneur was formed to convert it into a luxurious gambling resort for wealthy western tourists. Guests included Saddam Hussein, Olof Palme and Silvio Berlusconi. With the collapse of communism and the beginning of the civil war, tourism also collapsed and the buildings served as emergency accommodation for war refugees. After privatization in the late 1990s and the sell-off of corrupt businessmen, Haludovo had to close in 2002.
