This is one of those rare channels that actually discusses photography as an Art and has discourse about composition, techniques and being able to develop an "eye" for this medium. As opposed to the almost countless and mindless gear review channels in UA-cam. Please never change the format of this channel. Thank you for your wonderful efforts. Cheers!

Yep. I don't mind the odd gear review but more and more they seem like adverts (for new stuff anyway). I'm much more interested in the art side of photography.

Yep. And as Alex mentioned those "cinematic" landscape photographers... They are interesting, of course, but gets boring too soon and their content is more like bragging - "Look what I made!" with a little insight (if we don't count "see that tree? it looks good"). It feels much more like a promo for their courses and prints than anything else. I don't mean it bad - it a work as any other, but the content of their YT channels is then more "promoish" than valuable.

Five years ago I decided to get "serious" about learning photography. I decided to go beyond being a point and shoot photographer. Five years later, I am a working photographer with a budding small business. I use to be "that" photographer who constantly searched gear reviews and how-to videos, but along the way something changed. I found Sean Tucker and began to realize, technical proficiency is the easy part. The hard part is the creative process. I do portraits and one of the things my clients say is they like how I prefer to shoot on-location, rather than a studio. It's not a revolutionary approach, but channels like yours have lead me to look at the process of photography as more than a technical process and more as a creative pursuit. Sometimes portraits can feel cookie cutter, but my goal has become to give my clients a different kind of cookie. If you want me to skip your YT video, put a title that tells me you're switching camera systems or Sony vs. Canon or "The 5 lenses you have to own." I need something more. Recently I discovered the work of Arthur Tress. His work has lead me to rethink my approach to shooting portraits and what I want my photos to convey. Channels like yours remind me the "why" of photography is just as important as the "how." Thank you for contributing to my education as a photographer. I will work to keep my photographic eye on the search for the "why."

Thanks for all you do Alex. Your channel is one of my favorites on UA-cam. Certainly my favorite photography channel. I’m not interest in gear (don’t have the budget), and am pretty well versed on f-stops and shutter speeds. But you bring in more of the “why”, the motivations, and provide inspiration. And exposure to a lot of photographers I hadn’t been familiar with. Keep up the good work!

I've actually stopped watching gear reviews for the past half year, and surprisingly I do not miss it! It's sad to say, but I suspect the vast majority of viewers on YT are much more interested in gear than photography itself. I find it amazing that I can pick up second hand cameras and lenses for a fraction of the cost of a brand new one, and the cameras are hardly used too. In today's world of consumerism, it's all about tech and 'the next best thing'. Very few people are interested in the art of photography, so your channel is one of the select few that I follow slavishly. Others include T Hopper, Streetsnappers, Christine Wilson, e6 Vlogs and Adam Gibbs.

Alex, it is not only UA-cam. A friend and I are trying to resurrect a group that died during covid. There are a multitude of photo groups and clubs in the Houston area so we wanted to rebuild it differently, a group to discuss photography on a level beyond the photo club. At the first meeting of possibly twenty people, I inquired how many were familiar with Minor White. Three people raised their hand. After seven months it is very evident that all they want is no more than a sit-down Facebook, a place to show their average work and get likes. Currently in the process of putting together my departure from the group power point and the intro has a Kilbee quote. The full quote is included, this is shortened, “Creating work that looks like contemporaries is creating average work.” Love your channel and watch everyone ̶ frequently buy the books you mention.

My wife and I both love walking about the Peak District. My camera and tripod are always there no matter what the weather. One day we were visiting an old flour mill and we saw a couple walking towards us. I was carrying my camera and tripod, Moira had her phone, and the couple were carrying cameras. It was a Robinson Crusoe moment, footprints on the sand. We stopped and talked about photography and we shared special moments just talking about photography and some experiences; and it was wonderful. Sadly we all had to part because the light was fading, but that conversation didn't fade and I still remember it clearly as I type. If there was a kernel of why I love photography, that was it. The talking and sharing of experiences. That is why my wife and I love your channel, Alex, because you talk about photography as experiences and it is like having a conversation and sharing special moments. Thank you, Alex. Paul and Moira.

I always felt that the photography process was an osmosis thing. I went to a university (Concordia, MTL) which has a great Fine Art and Communication Arts programme. Ergo, the photography section in the library was comprehensive. I couldn't get into the programme, so I just went up to Webster hauled out as many monographs as I could and would just peruse them. This was in the seventies so the styles were very 'modern' and what I interpreted as 'traditional'. I knew copying or replicating wouldn't help, so I just allowed everything to coalesce as best I could. If the mood gelled, then I had a great time.

I was talking to a shire councillor the other day. Neither of us knew the other, though he knew my father and I used to work with (presumably) his brother, back in the 60s.
His brother and I worked in the local bank. Having mentioned his brother by way of establishing a relationship, and to an extent, my credentials, I said I'm autistic. For me, it's important people know that so that if they know about autism, perhaps they will understand, or tolerate, my little quirks.
I told him that my autism lead to my leaving the bank. I told him, I could write him a letter saying that his account was overdrawn, and that he should give some attention to the matter. But, t wouldn't be diplomatic.
I'm glad you said "long winded" first. I noticed.

I found your channel by chance - as you mentioned probably as a UA-cam recommendation - and once I finished that first video, I knew I had to subscribe. Your channel and the different content that you bring us is a breath of fresh air in a sea of photography gear/techniques/post-processing channels.
I subscribed to Sean Tucker's channel first a year or two ago and enjoyed his philosophilacal and thought-provoking approach. I can say that your content has the same effect on me. I absolutely love this channel and cannot miss a single video. I've learned about some amazing photographers from you.
One angle I want to highlight: I think that for most photographers, the first step in their journey is always that gear obsession. UA-camrs know this and give them that. As photographers "mature" in their craft and spend 5 or 6 years doing it, they realize that they can take amazing photos with almost any camera. Including a phone's camera. At that point, they start to long for something else. Learning about the art. Understanding light. Knowing about "real" photographers who existed long before UA-cam and all the fancy gear we're spoiled with these days. At least this was my journey.
I hope that channels like this one can make a change and reverse the photographic journey for aspiring photographers. I think that it would be hugely beneficial for starting photographers to soak in the art first, which will enable them then to make more "sensible" gear decisions.
Thank you Alex, and keep up the fantastic work.

The only way to stop the addiction is to grab your camera and make a rush for the door, before another video starts. Great work keep them coming. I started with film photography back in the late 70s early 80s at Art College this was a great melting pot of creatives, and good fun.

Excellent points. I'm often disappointed when I here (sorry, of course I meant 'hear') conversations from photographers that always refer to their camera gear, lenses, photo editing apps. Often, what comes up for me is, "Heck, Ansel Adams used a Brownie!" It's not about the technology. It's about the inner vision of the artist behind the camera. Those are the conversations I love. I love how you support photography for the sake of photography. More and more, it seems that photography is represented as a certain "look" through UA-cam, or pretty much any outlet. Creativity is being squashed for photographers because the message is clear. If you are a landscape photographer, you have to go to epic places and capture the same images that you see on the computer. If you photograph people, you need models that are only partially clothed to make an image worth looking at. Everything has gone over the top in the interest of garnering likes and comments, but that leaves most photographers in a lurch thinking that their voices are not worthwhile. I'm old school, and don't do many videos at all, but I have documented most of my photographic journey through a (written) blog. I don't get a lot of views, only 114 subscribers, but I talk about my ups and downs as a photographer along with what sparks my interest in a subject that leads to a photograph. I shoot what interests me, which could be landscapes, decay, abstracts, or people. If I'm not in a creative place, I talk about it. As with you, my goal is to make photography accessible to more, and try to create a relevance in a time of visual ADD thanks to the mass of photos on social media. I can't leave links here because UA-cam will delete my post, but if you are interested, you can find my blog at gkiserphotographydotcom. Keep up the great work. Photography doesn't have to be flashy, and that usually waters down the simple story behind the image.

I love this channel. Photography was a hobby of mine in the seventies at school. I've just got back into it in my sixties. Back then I had to try to make every shot count because of the cost of the film and the developing. For me it was all about getting an interesting composition and using the camera to get all the effects that I wanted. I didn't have the means to develop the photos myself so for me there was no post production. Now, nearly 50 years later in the digital age with instant photos and post production available I find myself still being economical with shots and still trying to do as much as I can to get good images with the camera rather than relying on post production. I think that you Alex have a wonderful way of presenting and have really interesting content. I also really enjoy your warm and friendly format. ❤

This is a channel I really enjoy watching with my morning coffee. I'm so drained of the videos of: Why I switched to Full Frame, Why I sold all my Sony gear, Why you need a 50mm, Leica Q2 Unboxing video etc. Maybe hopefully tagging the camera manufacturer into your hashtags or YT title can get them to notice you and we forget that the photo is created from the user's creative mind. The camera is just a tool to capture your creative intention like a pencil records your thoughts onto your paper. I was using Olympus but I was limiting myself only using their gear but when I started to look into Lumix and third party lenses for the system, I was now using the best of what micro four thirds offers in that ecosystem rather than blind loyalty. I've shared your videos in the community on my web site. I've just started working on my UA-cam channel after having it for years. But, it's not going to be about gear, it will be about my work and the things in life that inspire me. I've been a photographer since the 70s.

You, sir, speak of the MAGIC and the WONDER of photography. The connection an amateur has with the whole of the experience is not easy to describe. It may not even be something that can be instilled. It may just be something that is within you, or not.

I am really happy that I have found your channel. My skills in photography have gone beyond the basic technical aspects, but I still have a very long way to go to produce captivating photos. Over the 18 years during which I have been shooting, there are only a few photos that I find are truly captivating. Gear helps, but a good photographer can produce awesome results even with inexpensive old gear.

  • @artsilva

I agree! It seems lately that photography communities aren't about photography anymore instead it's about the gear. I blame it on the bug marketing machines of some manufacturers, and who can blame them for using UA-cam influencers... and YT [gear] influencers are coming out of the woodwork because it pays.
Yes we have all the specs and knowledge of the photography tools but after that there is no proper or even correct information on what to do and how to create with those new shiny tools.
When I started photography back in the 70s it was trying to figure out How to get that image out of my head and onto an 8x10 piece of paper and slowly I acquired or borrowed the minimal tools I needed to let me achieve that vision. The point being is that getting that photograph was the priority and it didn't matter what new or epic camera I wanted.

This is exactly why I watch your channel. I'm happy with my gear; I definitely don't need 'how to' and I don't need more kit but I do appreciate absorbing inspiration and discussing photography and photographers. I think many others agree as your sub number has grown very quickly by YT standards. So please keep on your chosen path.

When I first started, I felt increasingly frustrated that I had no idea where to turn for how to become a better photographer. Every resource I came across were people going on the same POV walks or talking about gear with nothing actually about photography. Your channel feels like having a mentor, and my photography is improving with every video of yours I watch. Thanks again for doing what you do!

I'm currently reading Annie Leibovitz's At Work. She doesn't talk about gear and settings, it's about how she came to get that photography job and her vision for what that shoot should be like and how it turned out. It's a fascinating book.
I don't watch gear reviews. I don't watch gear reviews mostly because they are camera brands I don't use. But also because I've got the new gear bug bad enough, I don't need any help.
I also don't watch Lightroom or Photoshop how-to videos. I don't use either of those programs. I use open source software. Photography is an expensive enough of a hobby without giving Adobe $10 a month.
These days I seem to be more into the why of photography. I enjoy looking at the work of the masters.
Composition videos are always welcome. As are videos that give me a quick boot in the seat of the pants to grab the camera and get out the door. Which I am going to do right now.

I love your channel Alex! You do photography such a huge service by focusing on the photographs and photographers behind them, which truly has been missing on UA-cam with all the Peter M's and his like out there (nothing against them, I still enjoy them), and the other "influencer" type photography channels. I have learned a lot watching your channel which inspires me to be a better photographer, not just a "dope content creator"...

For what it is worth, I honestly think this is the best channel geared toward photography. The content presented here is lovely and challenging to find elsewhere, even in books. It stimulates the mind of photographers and makes people think about photography in a different light. You should be proud of your channel and its content. I know it's difficult to put good content out there and get a fraction of the views that gear reviews get (of which there are billions on the same topic/gear), or the channels with 5M subscribers that have just shit content.Which btw, they are probably avid followers of your channel wishing they could talk about photography at this level. I hope this serves as an incentive.

On the one hand, you're advocating and organizing a crowdsourced kind of social engineering hack of UA-cam, and that's awesome.
On the other hand, you're reminding the audience how the video gadget they're all glued to _is supposed to work_. And the fact that it's necessary to do this throws the gap, between UA-cam's design in theory and UA-cam's function in practice, into sharp relief.
We live in strange times for sure. Cheers and thank you.

Alex, found you channel a month or so ago and find your vids really interesting. I just wanted agree about the thrill. My late dad and I had a simple but functional b/w darkroom in the mid 60's and the "thrill" of seeing an image come to life in a dish containing some chemicals is absolutely amazing. It's really a pity that the digital age, for all its benefits, has taken that away from us. Very interesting to see how ex Saffers are making it in this world :)

I appreciate the time, effort and hard work that is required for you and other photographers on UA-cam to make this content for me to enjoy, at no charge, and therefore I always give a LIKE and I always watch the video through to the end so that you all can reap the most benefit from your labor. I am not able to pursue all the aspects of photography as I once did when I was younger, but I enjoy seeing others who can. And I enjoy thoughtful, serious discussions on the subject. The videos I refuse to watch are those that tout the "best" whatever, camera, lens, accessory, or settings for this or that type of photography. The videos I enjoy the most are like yours and others that inspire me to become better or help me understand the art of photography. Thank you.

Great topic! There is actually a dark side to gear videos, as they can feed on our insecurities. A person buys a lens, and feels good about the purchase. Same person see's a gear review, or a versus video related to their purchased lens. They can't resist the bait and click on that thumbnail to get the 3rd party validation they crave from a "professional". Or, feels compelled to leave an emotional response defending their decision to buy that lens if the reviewer does not like it. Honestly, half the comments in those videos are from people who already own the product, so they are not looking for purchasing advice, they are looking for validation/dopamine fix. Anyhow, great content as per usual!

The world and his dog can make technical videos. These type of videos have their purpose, as problem solvers if nothing else. After being a semi pro motorsport photographer for a few years I became disenchanted with image taking. Photography had for the most part become just a means of documenting holidays. I had started taking snaps! I have needed that content, they have helped me get back up to speed with taking photographs just because I want to as it were. I have been searching for a channel that helps me with the why more than the how, the art rather than the science, the camera as a means of portraying something and not the end in itself.
Thanks Alex for helping me regain my love of photography and helping me rediscover my photographers eye.
