    Hey Gill thanks a lot. This convinced me to buy one of these. We've got a new setup for SDI Switching using a BMD Television ATEM HD switcher with our 3 Sony cameras that unfortunately are only 1080i. The BMD ATEM HD expects everything to be on one level, so my GoPro's and MAC Minis we use for ProPresenter cannot be switched currently. This device looks like it'll do it ! Thanks for the time.

      Hi Rick,
      Ditto! Inputs can be tricky. Outputs are much easier. Yes, everything has to line up or nothing works! Our Payload = 1080i / 59.94; Our Delivery = SMPTE Level B. ATEM default Broadcast spec. We've read where other Users are having problems with this Converter and GoPros. The GoPros are 1080p / 60. My guess would be BlackMagic needs another Firmware Update for compatability. For now, for the GoPros, stick with the Decimator MD-HX Converters. We've only had 1 Laptop we could not reconcile with a Decimator, which can handle almost anything, including GoPros.
      By all means try one of these BlackMagic UpDownCross Converters on the MAC Minis. We're always concerned with BlackMagic Converters hitting their mark when they first become available. What's your Broadcast spec? In other words, how do you have your ATEM Video Switch configured? Another way to look at it - What's your final output? Since your Sony's are 1080i / 59.94 Broadcast, set your ATEM accordingly. And have everything else lineup to that spec. Or... Can you locate the Video Switch close to the MAC Minis (within 7 feet) since you have 4 HDMI Inputs? Thanks for Sharing & Thanks for Watching! Hope this helps!

    Hi Gill. With this setup, is the HDMI output converted in any way or is it kind of like an HDMI loop out ? Instead of a monitor, I'd like to send to a video projector. Thanks a lot for this video.

    • @gillboyd2956
      @gillboyd2956  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Arnaud Bos,
      HDMI - Whatever comes In, same going Out. Monitors are very forgiving on what type of signal they will receive RGB vs NTSC. A Video Projector will work too! Set Your Switches and go! Test with a Monitor!
      Are You going from 1 Computer to Projector? You'll need a Converter on each end. Suggest a Decimator MD-HX at Computer end.
      Just remember Your signal - 1080i/59.94 - SMPTE Level B, for both converters. Blackmagic default. Decimators take maybe 5 minutes to configure, using their software. Faster than messing with those buttons. Glad we could help!

  • @Leeroi132
    @Leeroi132 3 роки тому +2

    Very very thorough review thank you! I’ve been trying to decide between the MD-HX and this - by chance do you know about how the NTSC configuration works with the BlackMagic? Does it take an analog NTSC signal and convert it to a digital SDI?

    • @gillboyd2956
      @gillboyd2956  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Sabre, No Comparison. This is a good Converter and works if You know what You're doing. However, no Comparison to a Decimator MD-HX Cross Converter. Once the Decimator MD-HX is configured, as Input or Output, it's good to go. And is bullet proof. No guessing. Spot on! Configure the Decimator MD-HX with their software through USB port. 5 minutes tops! See results in real time as You make changes! Decimator MD-HX has a locking Power tap. No pull outs!
      Now back to the other part of Your Question, this is all digital. Both of these are strictly digital.
      For an Analog to SDI Converter, You want something like this... Blackmagic Design Mini Converter - Analog to SDI

    Is this possible: connect an HDMI source to HDMI in, output from SDI out, and HDMI out and get a signal from both outputs; OR connect an SDI source to SDI in, output from SDI out, and HDMI out and get a signal from both outputs?

      Hi Paul,
      Welcome. The Decimators are better Cross Converters overall to do what you want. Set and forget. On BlackMagic UpDownCross HD Converter, SDI Input has priority. Both Outputs should be active. Test and Verify. See Manual here: documents.blackmagicdesign.com/UserManuals/BlackmagicConvertersManual.pdf - Search: UpDownCross HD - Thanks for Watching!

      @gillboyd2956  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Joseph Morales,
      Welcome! You should be getting 1080p59.94, 1080p60, 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 1080i60 according to the Devices You're connecting with for Send and Receive. You want to matchup with a Video Switch. Are You using Blackmagic or another Brand of Video Switch? Why? Blackmagic on this Device supports SMPTE Level B, not SMPTE Level A. As long as You're using 59.94, it will work. IF You deviate from that, it will not on SMPTE Level A. Hope that helps! Thanks for Watching and Asking!
      BTW: The Decimator MD-HX can do both SMPTE Level B and SMPTE Level A!

    What microphone are you using .....seems to be going into a Tascam dl10 is that right?
    I am trying to stream for a local event on a weekly basis using a canon r700 camcorder that goes out at 1080p 60 to a Black Magic Intensity Shuttle, it doesn't work. Based on what I have heard the BMI Shuttle wants 1080p 59.54 or something close to that. Is it work getting this updown cross vs an Elgato camlink that will effectivley turn that camera into a webcam?

    • @gillboyd2956
      @gillboyd2956  6 років тому

      Hi Cludford,
      Keep in mind what you're doing now and where you may eventually grow so you don't have to reinvent anything later.
      The Canon R700 - Great Video Camera - Bang for the Buck! Get a better HDMI cable than what Canon includes. HDMI is a fragile connection, therefor get a thinner cable. We use KAYO Hi-Speed SLIM Mini-HDMI(C) to HDMI(A) Cable 3FT or P&A Mini HDMI to HDMI Cable 6 ft. Both on Amazon. Have used MonoPrice Ultra slim cables, stay away from any Redmere cables. Redmere technology cables are hit or miss.
      This BlackMagic UpDownCross HD Converter will do what you want. Also consider a Decimator MD-HX Converter. The Decimator is more versatile with a diverse amount of gear & resolutions - Cameras & Computers. BlackMagic UpDownCross HD Converter is ready to go out of the box. The Decimator has to be configured. The Decimator, by default, is configured for Output.
      Choose your Recording Codec... Here's what you're working with - The Payload & Delivery... Your Payload = 1080i, 59.94 & your Delivery = SMTPE Level B. Broadcast quality, depending upon Codec chosen.
      We're using a Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio Pro 2 SSD Rackmount Recorder. Codecs should be same. Everything feeds into our ATEM Video Switch to SSD Recorder to Streaming Device.
      Your Devices...
      1.) Canon R700 - KAYO Hi-Speed SLIM Mini-HDMI(C) to HDMI(A) Cable 3FT to
      2.) BlackMagic UpDownCross HD Converter - Sanus Super Slim 4' or 8' HDMI Cable to
      3.) Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Shuttle - Sanus Super Slim 4' or 8' HDMI Cable to
      4.) Streaming Device.
      The Elgato Cam Link is not a reliable Device. Been through two of them. So bad, decided not to do a Video of that Device after 40 hours of tests. The Elgato Cam Link video processing quality is highly dependent upon the CPU. Example: 720, OK; 1080 anything, no way! Elgato Cam Link is a great idea but... Not worth the trouble. Tested the Elgato Cam Link with 3 different Computers from APU to CPU + GPU. Terrible results using an APU! Not enough processing power. Elgato Cam Link caused disk corruption. Restored HD from Clone. Elgato Cam Link also does not see an ATEM Video Switch, only Cameras.
      For Streaming - Get the Elgato Game Capture HD60. Ready to Stream to UA-cam or Facebook! Software usually auto updates on execution. Once configured - Works very well on either Desktop or Laptop. Do a Test and see! Slight delay if trying to watch output while streaming. It's more a matter of the technology than the device.
      For Streaming, set the Elgato Game Capture HD60 for 1080, 30. If you have a 10 Meg or greater Upload speed then you can do 1080 / 60. The Elgato Game Capture HD60 will do the conversion for Streaming.
      Your Audio - Suggest Rode RODELink Wireless Filmmaker System. Our Audio system is a little more involved since we do both Video & Live Broadcasts with multiple inputs.
      For what we're using -
      Short answer...
      Our Audio chain... When using the Video Switch... For Video & Live Broadcast...
      - Shure GLXD14R/MX53 Wireless Headworn Microphone System (Rackmount)
      - Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Audio Interface
      - Blackmagic Design Mini Converter Audio to SDI
      No Compressor / Limiter. We had one in the Rack but had to remove the Unit due to space limitations and function fine without it. Needed the Compressor / Limiter when using cheap Mics. Not needed with the Shure Mics. Four Shure GLX-D Mics + Shure GLX-D Frequency Manager.
      Long Answer...
      We should do a Video of our audio chain setup(s). Surprised, you're the first to ask! Most folks seem to take audio for granted. And using just Camera Mics is a very bad idea beyond 5 feet. And get your gear on a UPS! More than you asked, here to help! Thanks for Asking & Thanks for Watching! Have Fun Streaming!

      Thanks much for such a detailed answer! I was told that the Elgato Camlink was the same thing as the HD60 without the HDMI pass through. I am glad that you clarified that conversion is done by the HD60. What about the HD60S which is USB3?
      The Decimator seems to be industry standards, but I can't afford to purchase that out of pocket

    • @gillboyd2956
      @gillboyd2956  6 років тому

      Hi Cludford,
      You're welcome! Stay away from any Streaming Devices requiring USB 3.0! USB 3.0 chipsets are ok for occasional data transfers but most cannot sustain the throughput required for Streaming. Example - AMD FX Chipsets are the best example. What will happen - Windows 10 will see the Chipset as having problems communicating and will take the USB off line and anything connected to it. Very bad. Which requires rebooting the PC to get them back. Bummer! Intel chipsets are better but... How many people know their chipsets? The NEC Renesas chipset works best. But... Keep it Simple. USB 3.0 chipsets were not designed with Streaming in mind. When we start mixing technologies that's when we run into problems that act like little gremlins. We don't have time for such nonsense when Streaming. Everything has to work.
      Besides, if the HD60 can Stream 1080p / 60, through USB 2.0, why bother with USB 3.0 which can be cantankerous. USB-C different matter! Now here's what is really odd, you can hookup the HD60 to any USB port and everything will Stream just fine. Test and see, you're results may vary. In other words, a USB 3.0 port can handle the constant data Streaming of USB 2.0.
      Most 1080 Video on UA-cam is 1080 / 30. A Video Editor will see 1080 / 29.97. Right click on a UA-cam Video and select Stats for Nerds. Easier to Stream 1080p / 30 than 1080 / 60. It's all about your Upload Bandwidth. If you download a UA-cam Video, VLC will see 1080 / 29.97. 4K - Different matter.
      At least you know about the Decimator MD-HX. BTW: Decimator output appears fuzzy when viewing HDMI output on a monitor. Decimator, on SDI Video, looks good. Whereas, the BlackMagic UpDownCross HD Converter looks good both through SDI and HDMI.
      Also - The HD60 will, by default, Record while Streaming. If you're using a Laptop, a 1TB or larger HD will work best. Dump the Data between Stream Events so you don't run out of HD space. Or just turn off HD60 Recording while Streaming. And turn off HD60 Video Preview while Recording if on a slower CPU. Use an i7 for Streaming to maximize results and to minimize Streaming problems. Hope this helps! Thanks for Asking!

      Hi Lau Milne
      ,
      Tell Us more please. What do You have the Video switch set for - Default 1080i / 59.94? Set Switches on Converter accordingly. Both Video Switch and converter are SMPTE Level B. FYI: Does not matter though at this setting if You were using a different Converter.
      You can change Converter Switches in real time, on the fly to get a signal out. The switches are counter intuitive. Look for 1080i59.94 settings on Converter. Your Laptop would then need to be 1080. We're going from NTSC to RGB. HDMI is pretty forgiving. SDI is not. In other words, these Switch settings need to accommodate the needs of both pieces of equipment. Suggest keeping Video Switch set at defaults. Why: If You have any SDI Cameras, that's what they'll also be searching for to work - 1080i/59.94. Keep It Simple! Let Us know if this solves Your problem. Been out of town scouting job locations for real estate videos. We will get this working!
      What's Your final output - Projector?
      And if You have problems with this Converter, Decimator makes the MD-HX Converter that's bullet proof once setup.

      An alternative would be the Decimator MD-HX Cross Converter. Those are super easy to setup through their software. And they can do literally anything.
      What's Your complete signal path? What's Your Streaming Device? Video Switch to what? SDI out or HDMI out? If Your Streaming Device is HDMI, that's much more forgiving. Whereas SDI, everything has to be spot on perfect. Your Streaming Device should be able to handle the signal conversion coming out of the Video Switch.
      Hope that helps. Thanks for Watching!

      Hi Artisan Well
      ,
      In the world of Video Production, Black Magic Design has made Professional Video technology affordable. And our Goal, Behind the Scene is to show how we use this Technology for BuildOrBuy. And this Converter is no exception to the rule, as an Up Converter, Down Converter and Cross signal Converter it's an amazing Device for the price. To be able to convert a signal from HDMI to SDI is a blessing. And the technology is moving from SDI to NDI to Network Video Devices where distance is no longer an issue.
      Without Black Magic Design, most Churches could not afford to Broadcast nor Stream their Services. The Black Magic Design ATEM Video Switches are the best example of the technology being made exceptional and affordable.
      Even Broadcast TV Studios have Black Magic Design equipment installed either in house or in Broadcast Trucks or both. Sometimes, watching, if You know what to look for, you'll see Black Magic Design gear in use.
      The next closest competitor is over 5x the price. And at one time, Video Converters that could take HDMI to SDI were so prohibitive in Costs (Barco Image Pro Scan Converter = $7,500.00), those were devices that could only be rented on a short term basis. And that's one Device per each Input. And if You had like Us, 8 to 40 Inputs... See the math.
      Black Magic Design has made professional Video affordable for the rest of Us for Broadcast Production Video. And they continue to innovate! www.blackmagicdesign.com/
      Furthermore, Black Magic Design, has the ability to provide an end to end solution. Meaning, from Camera to Consumer and everything in between. They are changing the Video Business from rental to ownership. DaVinci Resolve is one of the best Video Editors. All due to Black Magic Design innovation.
      And DaVinci Resolve is so much more than just a Video Editor.
      Black Magic Design has just come out with a new Video Camera that blows away the competition offering 12k Resolution - Blackmagic 12K Camera - URSA Mini Pro 12K. Stay tuned!

But no signal. Other videos i have seen have thunderbolt go into MAC laptop but i have Windows 7 DELL. Please help.
