What I think is incredible is how many times I watch Shaq highlights and there's literally FOUR defenders in the paint and Shaq is just manhandling everyone.
For those that might not know, the Lakers swept the entire western conference. Then won the finals 4-1 over one of the only players Kobe and Shaq truly respected. Allen Iverson. 15-1, best record in the playoffs ever.
That 2001 Laker team beat FOUR 50 or 50+ win teams on the way to there 2nd straight Chip. Shaq was at or right there near his absolute peak, compared to the previous year of 2000. Kobe at that point in his career was just entering his prime at the age of 22. This all results in the greatest playoff run in NBA history. I enjoyed it 20 years ago and enjoy it at least as much watching it over again.
@@vincemeyers2064 Yes, but slightly. Kobe got every ounce out of the abilities he was blessed with. He was actually a supremely talented OVERACHIEVER. With Kobe, you were going to get a top notch, first class professional, superstar franchise player. Shaq was like something we never seen before, since probably Wilt. He was the most dominating force the league had ever seen. His peak (99-02) was right up there with any all-time great, MJ included. Kobe's my all-time favorite but objectively I think Shaq had a greater PEAK than Kobe.
This, this is my NBA. This is sports for me. I lived in Northern California (Kings Country) during this and am a big lakers fan. I would pace in front of the TV at age 13 screaming at the refs. Good times.
i don't have exuses for Embiid anymore. I was always one of the "the paint is too crowded for him to rise to the next level, they have to get rid of simmons" but now that i see Shaq....there's ALWAYS at least 2 defenders on him PLUS one of his teammates in the paint, and he trashed them all (including the teammate). Embiid is the only one (now thet cousins is out of the picture for good) that can do that (exept yannis, of course).
Why would you say that? Embid is amazing but he's not shaq. Giannis is another guy who is amazing but it would be a lot harder for him to drive to the basket during the 2000.
That first possession by the lakers just shows you the difference between shaq and Kobe. Shaq draws the double gives the pass and kobe missed. Shaq deflects the Rebound to kobe and kobe tries to attack the rim and gets a pretty good look and misses. Then shaq gets the rebound and scores. Some people actually will argue kobe was just as good as shaq in those first three chips.
5:31 !!!! Watch the ref, he simply tells Chris Webber to get up. I miss the days when touch fouls didn’t lead to a half dozen and ones for the Heat in game 5 of the 2020 finals. No I’m not bitter, I’m not bitter that the team couldn’t play at all, outside of AD and Lebron. Nope, all is well....if Green would have hit that damn shot! Or if Morris didn’t lose butler or throw the ball away!!!! Gooosfrawbah.
@@Hunt9-qb1if he wasn’t prime his rookie year. I’ll give you his 2nd year when he was averaging 29ppg. But list the centers he was facing in the playoffs
A lot of people forget that he was like that. He couldn't stand that they ran the offense through Shaq and he'd end up going rogue trying to play hero ball. Led to a lot of really bad shots and out of control drives to the basket. You can see Shaq cleaning up his messes a lot in these highlights.
Kobe drove to try and score twice while Shaw was down there and missed twice🤣u could tell they ain’t reallly rock with each other that much at that time
@@tyshawn5983 Shaq called Kobe the best player in the league. Doug Collins the best player in the league. Kobe was leading the team in scoring going into the finals
And ppl claimed Kobe carried Shaq in the WC. The only team Kobe consistently outplayed Shaq was against the Spurs since Shaq was hacked and hounded by the Twin Towers(Duncan &Robinson) while Kobe was single covered by Bruce Bowen.
@@Theterminato2013 exactly. Duncan and Robinson were forced to hound on Shaq because that's the only answer they had for him. Robinson proved in 99' that he couldn't guard Shaq by himself. Once Duncan came in they had a chance. But even then they didn't hold him on any points. He still got his 28 and 16.
No it wasn't. Everyone thinks 02' was, but it wasn't either. All the teams who played Shaq that year fouled him as soon as he got the ball down low. He caught on to that and when the Kings continuously tried the same tactic, he got his free throw percent up to counter that.
