The concept of the island and smaller terrain makes this the perfect game to play on the go. By having you defend all around you and separating it among various islands, you don’t have to worry about stopping your game halfway through a match. Great alternative to games like Civilization who still haven’t made it to the system.
Civilization is on the Nintendo Switch w/ dlc.

Yes the islands are do have unusual form however most people live on the main land
Fascinating, may I ask if these attacks from enemy forces (in small quantities) also occure there?
While I don’t personally have any experience with any attack’s (I don’t live on the cost) they do occurs but not as often

Just bought it! I adore the art style and the battles taking place on those little islands. I've been looking forward to the release and can't wait to play it. :)
Tips for those wanting to be better at the game:
1 have your units one step away from where boats are about to land as they (the boats) cause a stun effect on the tile that they land on. fat boats holding 10 or more people stun extra tiles.
2 pike-men can hold for longer if the enemy cant circle around, ie a straight line or hill
3 warriors seem to attack better if you move them into an enemy force instead of leaving them stationary. this is especially useful just after a boat lands as you can kill almost all the occupants
without loosing anyone.
4 VS shields:
-Pike-men can obliterate them given you are able to follow tip 2.
-Archers can't deal any damage on their own but if you engage the enemy with another unit you can blindside the shield-men for mega damage.
5 VS archers
-warriors can 1 V heaps of archers with no losses so long as you charge them relentlessly and be especially wary of step 1, as when they are stunned they can take moderate damage from the enemies archers.
-For ultimate pwnage you can combo warriors one step away from the enemies landing spot to charge them in once the enemies land and archers on a cliff or hill behind them then your archers can hit them without theirs being able to deal any damage (due to increased range and maybe accuracy from height advantage) and your warriors can hold them in place while taking no damage (again look out for tip 1) preventing their archers from being able to close the distance to your archers on the hill, leaving them dead and you with no losses.
6 Saving
-You can export saves into the 'backup saves' location if you want to skip the first few uneventful islands or re load a previous save if your units get wiped.
-If you want to be cheaty you can save scum the battles or save your play-through if some of your units die as: it would be kind harsh if your game crashed halfway through a battle and all of your progress was lost. because of this if Bad North crashes halfway (*cough* ALT + F4 *cough*) then when you re-start Bad North it loads from a save directly before the battle begun, essentially giving you infinite retries.

A very useful thing to do in easy or normal difficulty (Pretty much impossible to do on hard mode) is to acquire as many commanders at the start of the game and divide your forces into 2 smaller groups. This will allow you to attack twice as many islands and thus cover much more ground at the beginning of the game. Subsequently, you will have more gold and items to extensively upgrade your units (I strongly recommend only upgrading 4 of them). Beware however, as the campaign progresses it will be increasingly difficult to take on an island with only half an army, so I recommend once the difficulty starts to spike near the end that you take all 4 of your best commanders into each battles. By now, it will not matter that you can only attack 1 island per turn, at this stage your 4 elite units will probably be nearly fully upgraded and ready to take on the final island.
Something to remember when playing bad north is the importance of unit abilities. A lot of players forget about upgrading these and although the priority should indeed be to upgrade the troops themselves, these should not be overlooked. In the later, more difficult stages of the campaign, it will effectively be crucial to use abilities as frequently as they are available in order to maximiser your chances of surviving.
a) The Warhammer is an elementary yet very effective way of dealing with large groups of weak enemies. Best equipped on infantry, this item will allow you to swiftly devastate a battalion of archers or swordsmen if you find yourself in a tricky situation.
b) The bomb is, if you will, a single use mega-warhammer with range. The main difference however is that it focuses more on actual damage than knockback. As such, it is still as effective in taking out groups of weaklings, but is equally as effective in weakening or killing very strong enemies such as brutes. This is something that the warhammer cannot do as well. The bomb is ideally equipped on Infantry or Archers.
c) Comparatively to the warhammer and the bomb, the plunge might seem somewhat weak. However, it proves to be a fantastic ambush ability whilst also providing an additional way for your infantry to get around the map. A good strategy is to have pikemen hold a chokepoint while a unit of infantry watches over the scene from a cliff, if the pikemen start to give in, the infantry can quickly plunge in and clean up the rest of the vikings. If upgraded to max level, the plunge becomes devastating.
d) Pikemen, by nature are not a very mobile unit meaning that they mostly stay still and wait for the enemy to come to them and decimate them. However, their charge ability, while being extremely effective at slaughtering a row of enemies, grants them a "last resort" tool. For instance, this ability can be used to clear archers which pikemen are typically helpless against. Alternatively, if defending pikemen start to weaken under the unrelenting viking assaults, do not hesitate to charge out the remaining foes.
e) Although tricky to properly use, the archer's volley ability can be used to devastate or strongly weaken viking enemies. In particular, it can be used a point blank range to pretty much delete units that have managed to get very close to your archers, making them very vulnerable.
This game is super fun, and I was wondering what if they added some boats to protect the enemy's from your archers making game a little harder at time. And what about bad guys that could climb up walls! That would be crazy. Just some ideas.
Played it for a few hours tonight. The simplicity of it should not be confused for shallowness. This is a challenging game with great depth.
Will be buying this game immediately. I love games where you control troops.
