During ww2 my grandfather ran across one and was fascinated and the rest of the time he was in the uk, Germany and France he would go to every toy shop and ask everyone if they knew of anyone who had one they wanted to sell and he would buy and send home to the u s, so I still have them and I have 64 that works and several that were damaged during shipping in the 1940,s. It's a shame we can't post pictures on UA-cam anymore because I have some that are awesome and unbelievable, he continued to collect until 1982 when he passed away, i have one that's the size of a piano and it plays the songs of 8 different birds singing with them moving on top , most of the ones I have i have never seen another like
I have been fascinated with automata for ages and I was SO happy to see this show and tell. I never knew about training the canaries! I have 2 macaws so I am extremely fascinated by all of the bird automata. I love the singing boxes! I'm never ever jealous of anyone's possessions, however I found myself feeling very envious of your collection! Thank you so much for the tour. I'm incredibly grateful!
These two look so happy. Like no troubles in the world could possibly affect their world. They are having so much fun too. A pair of hearts united by their passion. Thank you for sharing.
I am so delighted by these beautiful little bird automatons. The amount of love and engineering poured into these sweet little creations is just incredible.
I found you through tiktok. I need these kind of analog wonders to calm me down and to realize you don't need digital al the way. A proper engineered analog front end base is the solution and use digital to fine tune. These days we try to digitize everything. Even when it's proven some things are better left being handled the analog way. Thank you for this!
You two are brilliant. Very fun to watch, and very valuable info! I stumbled across your channel while looking for info on an automation singing bird in cage, that perches atop a table in the Parlor of the 1868 Victorian Mansion that I help look after. The poor dear had had a rough life, but still captivating. I wish I could bring it to you for some love, but I am over in the US. :(
I've seen a few bird feather art pictures for sale online and they might be a cheaper source for your feathers. They're from South America from around the 50's.
Thank you so much for making this in one long video, it's much better than breaking it up into several. Do you make or have you made automata of your own or just restorations. I think they are incredible. Maria, have a drink on me.
Sweetheart I hate to tell you this but birds are considered part of the animal kingdom. Therefore they are technically animals. And technically so are humans. We're a type of animal. But seriously birds are animals.
michael you have a beautiful collection and workshop ,ive always been interested in all forms of automata especially the bird boxes of carl griesbaum and flajoulot, charles bruguier beautifully made .i would love to be able to make my own automata of some kind. do you do tours of the museum . after the lockdown ? do you sell blue prints of the birdboxes on how they are made? as its nigh on impossible to find anything about the workings how the bellows are made do they have a variable pitch to the whistle what size oh i could ramble on for hours so any info would be greatly appreciated all the very best philip in co durham ...
04:22 How do you spell that? Serenate? I love birds and collecting strange facts about them. Your video is perfect for this. It's so nice to see you both so happy and fascinated. A really special video. Thank you :)
Between things like this bird & the demand for exotic feathers for women's clothes & hats, bird populations were nearly made extinct at the turn of the century & the practice was finally banned. These are fantastic examples of automata though.
what a beautiful working atmosphere lol . if it wasn't so expensive you could get some from the fly fishing boys who tie fishing flies with them . I love your work . I love this stuff ,..........lol you could put together a automatum BBQ with some of the reject stuffed birds on it ....LOL Cheers Guys
Please please consider microphones - very hard to hear you and that's super disappointing. Your knowledge is amazing. Would love to be able to hear it.
I saw a bird in a cage on an auction won for $55, (perhaps a cheaper model of a knock-off?) but it ran off a battery. AS I SIT HERE ON MY FRONT PORCH listening to yours,... my little birdie friend is responding, as he had been eavesdropping on this video Ha
Dragons are reptiles. Not birds nor mammals. Curious if the bird actually matches the song that bird makes? Would be nice to know the value of these singing birds, unrestored vs working. Are you restoring these for collectors/museums, or do you own any of them? Loved the small, gilded box and all the caged ones.

as a child looking at automata is 1000x more fascinating to look at than anything on a screen

wonderful and informative video
15:52 - the way that key is ratcheted so you can't screw up and wind incorrectly is really cool. I wonder why more artists/makers didn't do that?
Such magical people! Nobody ever said before - We wish you goodbye 💙 thank you
Wow. Fantastic collection.

A bird is an animal.
Is it even possible to even find these amazing items anymore?
Mon souhait c'est de travailler, comme apprenti, dans cet atelier. J'adore tout ce qui est automate, horloger et boite à musique.
Thank you so much for making this in one long video, it's much better than breaking it up into several. Do you make or have you made automata of your own or just restorations. I think they are incredible. Maria, have a drink on me.

very nice!! greetings from brazil o/
06:20 Haha! Now I realise why you wanted to be thd camera person for this one; so that a bird could anwer the calls. :D
Me encanta la verdad
Dragon is in its own family but it is a cousin to the bird! Ergo bird!
Never mind Vaucanson's duck: I'd like to see his flute player, or his pipe and tabor player...
Quickly checking my calendar to make sure that I'm in 2021.
Still have that stupid duck song stuck in my head
Where are you please?
Wish you would get a closer shot of the details

Os autômatos são uma característica do IMPÉRIO DE TÁRTARIA.
Between things like this bird & the demand for exotic feathers for women's clothes & hats, bird populations were nearly made extinct at the turn of the century & the practice was finally banned.

T.T I went to see if I could get a copy of Flights of Fancy and it's nearly a grand now (on amazon, any who). Keep those two copies safe!
Wow. A physical copy? Can you get it digitally for less?
