Something that I think is overlooked is that much of the style and presentation of the 20s, 30s, and 40s had a lot to do with the technology of the day. Artificially lit photos were lighted with constant stage or film production lights, and the typical shutter speed was 30 seconds or longer. It necessitated very structured poses that could be held for long periods of time.
Excellent video, Kayleigh. As someone who has lived through over half the time span you covered I'm always very interested in the insights of younger people with regard to the culture of those decades. I'd never realized a trend in the '80s of women taking a stronger looking role in fashion photography. Of course, the age of the "supermodel" was born then, too. My favorite period will forever be the '60s, which was such a time of rapid change and innovation.
Lovely overview! I would love to hear your take on Beauty photography from the past century or so, as the styles were at least as varied as fashion, and the photography itself changed dramatically as well. Technology, of course, played a large part in that, but there were stylistic changes independent of those limits as well.
i loved this!! i was surprised but i think my favourite images here were from the 80's, they felt really powerful and full of boss energy like you said and i loved seeing that, great video concept, would love to see a male version and a beauty version too :)
90s fashion was weird, but it had a charm. Early 2000s in the other hand - that's one thing that should never come back (talking general fashion) 😂 full denim, skirts over jeans, chokers, ... 😂😂😂 What you said about fashion photography of the 2010s and 2020s, I think the same comment goes for general fashion. There are no more usual "trends". People wear what they want, and even draw inspiration from other decades whenever and however they want on a much larger scale than before. There were people like that earlier too, but in a much smaller number, and people would always comment on it (be it good or bad). But now most prople truly find their own style and nobody comments on it like it's unusual. The max you can hear is "wow, you look awesome". And even the few things (like Nike Airs, etc.) that gained a lot of popularity, people would again incorporate those into their own style. And I thi k that's great
Haha the early 2000s was definitely an interesting time! 😂😂 I absolutely agree, it's so great to be able to have creative freedom these days when it comes to fashion. 😊
Absolutely amazing! And so inspiring too! I had NO idea the fashion photography a century ago was so beautiful. The images you showed were so inspiring and I also kinda got to know that probably fashion is going to be one of my preferred genres to shoot (at least for the foreseeable future). Anyway, I'd LOVE to know how/from where you collected these beautiful fashion photography images. Thank you and continue making more videos. It's a pleasure watching your content (even the stuff from like 2017/2018). :)
Loved this! It was very interesting to see the evolution from decade to decade. I'm obsessed with some of the black and whites from the early days. I'm experimenting with film and would love to see you shooting on film. Could you also do a similar video on portrait photography from the 1850-1920 era? - Nadun
Hey loved this video so much Where did you get the pictures though because I’ve been looking for a source of editorial inspiration did you just check random places or have one source?
Thanks for doing this. I’ve been not shooting lately because my lack of ideas and I enjoyed going through the era’s. Definitely some things to learn. I’m surprised by your Bjork choice I think their are much better examples :P Anyway keep this kinda content up and don’t be afraid to slow down and taking your time with the images. @azeddprattphoto
Thanks so much, I'm glad you were able to draw inspiration from this! Oh there were so many good examples across the board, it was so hard to choose the images! 😂
Love the photographs of Herb Ritts and Peter Lindbergh. Such beautiful black and white photography and capturing natural essence and
Most of the Mario Testino photos from the 90's are my favorite.
So good right!? 😊
I like this video. You should make a video about beauty photography of the decades.
Thanks Michael! I'm definitely considering doing that video for sure 😊
