Sun Ra - Janus

  • Janus derives from a batch of tapes that Sun Ra sold to Black Lion Records in the early 1970s to fund travel costs for the Arkestra, but wasn't released until a 1999 CD from 1201 Music. Most of the information in the CD liner notes is incorrect or questionable. The first 3 cuts were released on the rare Saturn release Invisible Shield in 1974 as well as a confusing series of hybrid releases paired with various other Sun Ra album sides. The other 2 tracks were previously unreleased at the time and come from the same tour of New York state colleges in 1966 that produced the album Nothing Is (ESP-disk). It has been listed as a 2nd set from the same St. Lawrence appearance as that album, but my working hypothesis is that it is actually from a different show on the tour at the University of Buffalo. This release is obsolete as of the digital issues of Invisible Shield (sunramusic.bandcamp.com/album...) and St. Lawrence 1966 (sunramusic.bandcamp.com/album...) which is the same content as College Tour Volume One: The Complete Nothing Is

Awesome! This one really spoke to me. I've often compared Sun Ra's music to a spiritual stretch or massage, even an emotional one, this one really unblocked and realigned some things, and pulled me closer to the cosmos@@intergalaxtic !

Hi, thanks for uploading this. So, I think you may be correct about The Complete Nothing Is - If the 'second set' was indeed from the same show, how come you can hear the mic placement/ambience has changed somewhat? I'm not saying it's impossible that the mics were moved in between the sets, but I think you're right. Doesn't help also that the second take of The Exotic Forest on that collection is listed as being from a soundcheck, yet there is audience applause at the end, and not only that, the end of the track seems to fit up with the start of the second take of Satellites Are Spinning! So, did the soundcheck overrun into the start of the show? Was it even the same date? So many questions!

There is a 10 inch called Space Aura that Art Yard put out that is labeled as coming from the Buffalo show and it ends with a partial take of "The Exotic Forest" that matches perfectly with the partial take on the Complete Nothing Is with some overlap. I made an edit of the full performance of that tune. That is what leads me to believe that all the bonus material on The Complete Nothing Is comes from that Buffalo show. ua-cam.com/video/GqQYJLvNh9g/v-deo.html
