Your dad mentioned "Blade Runner 2049" which is extremely interesting because The Weeknd loves Blade Runner and even has a song titled after one of the original movie's classic scenes "Tears in the Rain" on his album Kiss Land, which is also extremely reminiscent of the Blade Runner atmosphere.
Abel's commentary on this album:...”picture the album being like the listener is dead. And they're stuck in this purgatory state, which I always imagined would be like being stuck in traffic waiting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. And while you're stuck in traffic, they got a radio station playing in the car, with a radio host guiding you to the light and helping you transition to the other side. So it could feel celebratory, could feel bleak, however, you want to make it feel, but that's what 'The Dawn' is for me."
spot on. on god that is the most beautiful thing ive ever heard, unbelievable. i think for reactors, its not really mentioned as its own moment as its the album closer, so their heads are overwhelmed with final thoughts on the project rather than the track alone. but a lot of us xo have been talking about how good it is elsewhere
I think it's great but I think it's just not so much of a "track" that's why people don't talk about it much, because it's just spoken and the outro of the album... Edit: I'm not saying that just spoken things can't be songs or tracks, but i just mean it's obviously a reason why it's one of the least played tracks on the album
@@antonhilbig795 agreed, it is a beautiful moment, especially after the whole story the album tells, but you ain't gonna be seeing me put this in my playlist

Just wanna say how much I appreciate your videos. My girlfriend has a hard time connecting with the music I love so much which often are the albums you review. The first time I put this album on she hated it, but after watching your reactions and comments on the album it totally changed her mind and we ended up having a lengthy discussion about music which never happens. You guys are the best, I admire your relationship and how you go through albums. Much love from Ontario!
Wow. I love that. I think alot of people don't think music cures the soul at least helps us to navigate in life. Connects our soul and creat bond and love. My husband not a big Weeknd only bcus he's not familiar with newer music from this generation he likes the old stuff ,so do I of course. and when he I told him one night about going to his concert he said " you wanna go, We'll go" I cried my eyeballs out cus he saw how much of an impact Weeknd has in my life and cures my soul. Soon as tickets go up we getting 2 just for us❤ the last time I wanted to got to a Weeknd concert was 2017 and I couldn't bcus I had just given birth and never gave it thought after that lol. Sorry so long! Just glad your and your girlfriend connect with music doesn't matter what kind 👍 XO Jersey girl❤

this is so priceless to me. My father instilled the art of listening at a very young age as he was a music teacher. He is responsible for all of my musical upbringing and this is the thing that i miss most about him....being able to chop up everything that we would listen to. He showed me how to "hear" all the instruments/voices individually and that eventually led me to becoming a producer. The last album that we've dissected was Daft Punk's Random access Memories. I've lost my dad in 2013 to cancer ...and those sessions that you guys do are so familiar to me that they bring incredible peace and closure. Much love and respect , never stop doing this !!

artists that had a heavy influence on this album were a lot of big 80s names. Simon and Garfunkel, Sade, Donna Summers, Giorgio moroder, and music from flashdance. he captured the era perfectly and added a bleak / uplifting concept to the music.
The weekend is a sellout and this channel is one too. Just doing pop artists. Is the weekend hip hop now. How about reacting to classic hh albums. Fake channel
Super happy you guys got to this album so shortly after release. I haven't put it down since it was released, I was never really a fan of The Weeknd and I have now listened through his whole discography and I'm a huge fan.
when your dad said " aye" i felt that ... jokes aside on "out of time" your dad was fully vibing into the instrumental and i totally understand him, the song has such a immersive instrumental that i had to listen to it probably 3 times to really get both lyrics and instrumental nuances
HERE'S MY TAKE ON THE CONCEPT: since a lot of the musical and lyrical ideas feel very similar to his other albums regarding falling in love and losing someone... here's how i take this. the weeknd is the purgatory's dj and entertainment even in old age, unable to find peace and forever forced to sit in this loop of musical tragedy where his life and sorrows are washed up and engulfed in dance music, watching the crowds move on to the next life. i feel like it is this very layered concept that has both in-universe implications about the exaggerated character of the weeknd but also meta ideas about that persona and how the fans view it. they constantly never want the character of the weeknd to find peace and to move back to this claustrophobic and harsh world of the trilogy mixtapes. he's stuck in this tragic loop while the world dances around him and people beg to hear more heartbreak and revel in it, while a song like blinding lights that's about him regressing into this obsessive and fame-blinded mindset becomes some amazing hit. that's why the ending of dawn fm makes so much sense especially with the visuals from the livestream: he sheds a single tear as he watches the crowd he entertains with his endless loop of heartbreak move on like he is unable to, and maybe every time he spreads his arms wide towards the light and hopes he can move on.
I totally agree with you, Jim’s words reiterate the idea of Able being in the purgatory. When he says that if you still have regrets you stick around. I see this album as someone’s last moments alive. His work is so thought provoking. He’s a poet, a great one.

This album resonates across generations because he has incorporated so many sounds, has great lyrics, and has made a return to the concept album. Pop culture references are a perfect touch!
Transitions on this album were fucking beautiful. Pretty standard for a Weeknd album. Also the 2 consecutive runs on this album from How Do I Make You Love ME, Take My Breathh & Sacrifice + Best Friends, Is There Someone Else & Starry Eyes are both fucking unbelieveable.
Fun fact: The background music was sample out of a song from 1983 called “Midnight Pretenders” by a Japanese artist named Tomoko Aran. It’s a part of a old and underrated genre called “Japanese City Pop”. And now Abel revived this genre from the dead! Thanks Abel!
I hate saying an album needs a good set of speakers or headphones to listen to but this album is so BEAUTIFULLY produced that it needs a high quality sound system to just enjoy all of the incredible nuances to each song. I think I sort of wrote this album off when it first came out because I tried to listen to it on Airpods on a busy street while walking an easily distracted puppy lol This album deserves your full attention to really appreciate how damn perfect it is sonically.
its so dope when both of you listening for the first time, the way you both react to the songs, the way you discuss whats happening on the record. brings tears to my eyes fr
The Weeknd just keeps getting better and so is this channel! It’s crazy how little The Weeknd cares about doing what everyone else is and just aims at making good shit
Thanks for showing love to the transitions!! They’re integral to this album’s greatness. Can’t wait for you guys to give it an uninterrupted full run through!
this album definitely grows on you if you didn’t love it the first time, been a long time fan and this album didn’t resonate with me much on the first listen but now i love it
So, the previous album and this one are like part 1 and part 2. This album is like a journey through purgatory, where he is reflecting on his past life, especially his past regrets in love. Jim is like the guide, pushing The Weeknd (and the listeners) to heaven, which is essentially completed by the last track. He has hinted at another album that will complete the trilogy, which people are predicting will be called after-life.

Hey Amanda!! There is that something special in that chorus that just makes you get emotional. Amazing stadium song. Not sure why it wasn't released as a single.
seeing your guy’s first listen really wants me to experience it for the first time again. this was more than just music. this album really makes you think and be creative on what the weeknd is trying to make you picture. the first time i listened to it, it was amazing but when i read somewhere that you have to picture that the listener is dead and in purgatory, that setting elevates the listening experience bc you start thinking of new things and you see the whole album in a new way.
I think the Weeknd now has the two best albums of the 2020s, the guy is a great singer but he’s really starting to become one of the all time great musicians slowly, and I’d now say he’s top 3 of this generation with Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar
what i like about him is he’s so different from other mainstream artists, usually when artists get big they tend to just throw in songs without a second thought, while he stays true to his art
I’m glad your dad mentioned thriller when listening to sacrifice. I am CONVINCED that sacrifice is a alternate universe version of thriller. Where instead of hiding that he’s a monster, he sacrifices their love in exchange for “more of the night.” So it’s the opposite of what MJ did. Instead of fooling the girl that he’s normal and doesn’t have that darker side of him, he embraces it. He accepts who he is.
We are slightly out of focus in this video, but I didn't want to scrap the footage, we both really enjoyed this album. my apologies.

And while you're stuck in traffic, they got a radio station playing in the car, with a radio host guiding you to the light and helping you transition to the other side. So it could feel celebratory, could feel bleak, however, you want to make it feel, but that's what 'The Dawn' is for me."
Them not knowing how good the transition from Best Friends to Is There Somebody Else KILLS ME
Your father is so musically educated, notices everything!! We need AFTER HOURS reaction!!!! Love your channel!! BIG LOVE FROM KAZAKHSTAN !!

My absolute favorite track is phantom regret by jim, it's so beautifully worded and delivered. I'm shocked that more people aren't talking about it.
spot on. on god that is the most beautiful thing ive ever heard, unbelievable. i think for reactors, its not really mentioned as its own moment as its the album closer, so their heads are overwhelmed with final thoughts on the project rather than the track alone. but a lot of us xo have been talking about how good it is elsewhere
We are. I believe UA-cam is not as lit as other social media cus its all I see on Twitter and Instagram.
I couldn't agree more. So good and I try to tell everyone about it haha
@@antonhilbig795 agreed, it is a beautiful moment, especially after the whole story the album tells, but you ain't gonna be seeing me put this in my playlist

It would be pretty cool if you played the whole Weeknd discography to your dad, Abel has such a diverse sound on every single record
They should go through it backwards from this to house of balloons it's kinda a wild ride
When he gets to Trilogy, it's a wrap.
I think doing the albums backwards would be a great listen.
@@donovanfisher322 Yea Conor is doing a great job in navigating his father through the music...totally agree.
this is such cap all of the weekend sounds the same
Starry eyes is so underrated. It gets me so emotional, such a beautiful song!! Especially when listening with good headphones.
Exactly the little erie rithm that Plays throughout the song reminds me of the movie Halloween
Honestly same, my personal fave on the album is is there someone else but the transition from that to starry eyes is unbelievable and then the vocals
On starry eyes, heavenly
super underrated
Being born in the 80s this album brings me so much joy. The Weeknd is an amazing artist. The vocals, the lyrics and the production, Jim Carrey as the radio host: perfection. Loved your reaction and commentary.
I love how your dad closes his eyes and really engrosses himself into each track. The passion for music really shines through in these videos!
Really cool how your Dad appreciates new music and is so open to hearing new sounds and artists. Many just neglect anything out of their comfort zone and oppose certain genres due to the “stereotypes” but dont actually give credit to production values, layers and storytelling. Great work again lads
majority of Out Of Time is actually a sample of an 80s japanese city pop song called Midnight Pretenders by Tomoko Aran! awesome song in itself
Thank you! I listened to this album with my sister and she says, it's from a japanese song but had forgotten which song it was.
ive litterally listened to this album so many times over the last month its now my most played of about the last year
nevermind all the reactions
I was violently hìgh when I listened to this album for the first time and it was the greatest experience ever
Music is always better lit
hell yeah! i’m so excited to see him react to some weeknd he needs to listen to house of balloons and trilogy in general i think he’d really appreciate the depth and musicality again love the commentary as always :)

The Weeknd made a great decision to put the Extended version of Take My Breath on the album
agreed x10000
It's the best version.
This album is just what I needed. 80’s inspired music and terrifically elegant production. 🔥
Just wanna say how much I appreciate your videos. My girlfriend has a hard time connecting with the music I love so much which often are the albums you review. I had this on last night and she couldn't keep her eyes off and was really loving the video.
Just glad your and your girlfriend connect with music doesn't matter what kind 👍

Revisiting the album several months later it really gets better with time. Really up there as one of the best albums of all time. No skips cos as a body of work it’s a masterpiece.
It dosent have the best songs in the weeknds discoraphy but the album as a whole is more than a album. Its a exprience. The story is just so good
Abel said it’s part 2 of the trilogy after hours and now dawn fm who knows what the next album is going to be

Part of the beauty of this album is how the song seamlessly transition from one to the next. Hope he can listen to this in its entirety.
This is a 52 minute album that feels like 30 minutes. My favorite album of his yet
@M M it’s definitely not for everyone. But it’s his most critically acclaimed album to date, the quality is undeniable even tho some ppl won’t like it
@M M re-listen to it a couple of times it may grow on you. that's what I did and I slowly started liking this album.
@M M i guess thas ur opinion but this album is really good though i do prefer kiss land, after hours and trilogy over this
@M M for me his weakest albums are starboy and mdm starboy just felt too long for me it could've easily been shorter by removing some of those weaker tracks like false alarm and mdm wasnt as strong as everything else hes dropped all that said i still love those albums
BRO YES. I love this album especially Less than zero
this is actually apart of a trilogy starting with after hours. i’d love to see you and your dad react to more Weeknd
When I heard Less than Zero live it was so surreal and such an amazing moment to experience, if you have not seen The Weeknd live it’s a must have fs
it was amazing
this is so priceless to me. Much love and respect , never stop doing this !!
absolutely love “The Weeknd”. this album just has a different feel and it’s amazing. highly recommend “House Of Balloons” to get into the original The Weeknd.
Weeknd not Weekend
The fact that you recommended House of Balloons but still called him "The Weekend" instead of The Weeknd is really funny to me for some reason
yes ik spell check caught me ok🙄
Right that’s how I got to know and love him back then… this new album feels more like the old stuff. Finally 😍😍😍 that’s the weeknd for me

his last few albums were kinda repetitive imo
This is so important to me guys... Weeknd is my all time favorite artist and it breaks my heart that i don't have my father anymore to sat down and listen this masterpiece with him.

I just saw Abel a couple days ago at the SoFi Stadium and Less than Zero was literally heavenly, to see all the blue lights twinkle, and everyone singing along with lasers all around me I almost cried. It wasn’t even one of my favorite songs but now it is 🥹
The transition from Make You Love Me to Take My Breath gave me CHILLS when I first heard it

artists that had a heavy influence on this album were a lot of big 80s names. Simon and Garfunkel, Sade, Donna Summers, Giorgio moroder, and music from flashdance. he captured the era perfectly and added a bleak / uplifting concept to the music.
Can't forget Michael Jackson, either

Super happy you guys got to this album so shortly after release. I haven't put it down since it was released, I was never really a fan of The Weeknd and I have now listened through his whole discography and I'm a huge fan.
when your dad said " aye" i felt that ... jokes aside on "out of time" your dad was fully vibing into the instrumental and i totally understand him, the song has such a immersive instrumental that i had to listen to it probably 3 times to really get both lyrics and instrumental nuances
I would want this album to be played at my funeral. The ending with Jim’s poem is perfect.
Agreed bro
Beautifully said
I totally agree with you, Jim’s words reiterate the idea of Able being in the purgatory. When he says that if you still have regrets you stick around. I see this album as someone’s last moments alive. His work is so thought provoking. He’s a poet, a great one.
damn what a great interpretation
The album also loops perfectly from the last track to the first, so worth it for die hard fans

This was a unexpected but great surprise! Album has been on repeat for me since release, gets better with each listen. Loved you're guys reaction
I love the new format of you two listening to an album for the first time! Definitely do this again!
Japanese city pop is so underrated
I hate saying an album needs a good set of speakers or headphones to listen to but this album is so BEAUTIFULLY produced that it needs a high quality sound system to just enjoy all of the incredible nuances to each song. I think I sort of wrote this album off when it first came out because I tried to listen to it on Airpods on a busy street while walking an easily distracted puppy lol This album deserves your full attention to really appreciate how damn perfect it is sonically.
