wow never heard their debut before and I am stunned! what a beautiful raw melodic death metal with black metal influences. And those stories... Pity they do not make such music anymore...
Fate of Norns, in my opinion, was their peak. Personally I'm glad they evolved past this, because black metal sounds really bad and it's hard not to notice the influence. It's like the drummer couldn't keep up at certain points and it screws with your head. Plus, yknow, being able to understand Johan is pretty cool. And I value hearing metal about my ancestors and theirs in a way that I can understand without a visual aid.
Love the black metal influence in Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds, This and The Avenger. The near melancholic guitars (such as in the closing section of the title track of the Nine Worlds) and the raw, almost painful screams of Johan really make them stand out.
Nothing about the first two albums is black metal lol. Tremolo picking is literally a foundational technique of the death metal genre and its hilarious how surprised you people are the fact that Early Amon Amarth is rooted into OSDM.
@@RedgraveGilver You are totally wrong. Oldschool death metal never sounded like this record. Obituary is oldschool death metal and it has nothing to do with Amon Amarth's early work.
The first song set the tone for all other songs to follow and established Amon Amarth as the greatest band. I grew up in the 70s and this was the sound I was longing for. Thank you! 🤘
All albums up to Twilight of the Thunder God were all-killer, no-filler Melodic Death Metal. In my opinion everything after was repetitions of themes and sounds that worked, and what was more broadly popular in the metal fanbase. But these formative albums were sonic Ragnarok; a valkyrie charge of driving force and a berserkers war cry of vocals. This debut is one of the strongest debuts in the genre, and for me hasn't been matched since.
Every Amon Amarth album since has been them trying to outdo their initial effort. They've come close a couple times, but their first is still their best.
@@chinhoification For sure. Andersson's drumming is great - it's furious, tight, and powerful, but Lopez's drums on that first album are absolutely ferocious. Yeah. This album is top 3 AA for sure. For me, these guys are another one where the tr00 kvlt attitude of "first albums" only kind of rings true. Sorry AA dudes but I've not even truely bothered to listen to the latest albums, not really since Twilight... Plodding, templated and cheesy. Their earlier works seem far more inspired. Melodic but still badass. Turning to the myths makes for better lyrics than the tv-show-esque "VIKINGS! HORNS! SHIELDS! THOR!" of the last ten years or whatever of releases. Even the more 'mundane' viking themes like in Dragons Flight come across better here. I wasn't "far" into non-mainstream metal when I came across these guys. I'd not really heard guitars like this unti this album, or early Opeth. It was a pretty cool discovery.
