It makes me so made when people say they don’t like this movie because it “isn’t accurate”. The movie wasn’t based on the story of the real Anastasia. The movie was based on the story told by the woman who thought she was Anastasia. It’s like they created a world where what she said was true and she got to live the rest of her life. And I think that’s beautiful.
And people loves Hercules even if it doesn't resemble the actual mythology; or Pocahontas which doesn't resemble the actual history; so on and so forth
nonsensical easily contradicted arguments like that are used by people when they need an excuse to not like something and not give it a chance to change their minds. In the end they’re only depriving themselves of a masterpiece 💔
Seeing Anastasia's sisters come out of the painting kills me, how later on she mentions how Alda teased her about a drawing Anastasia made but yet they did love each other. In her memory they seem to be giving her their blessing for surviving, and to keep on doing so.
This movie was absolutely underrated. Its a shame that when it came out it didnt get nearly the attention it deserved. The music, the animation all of it was beautiful, seriously on par with Disney at the time
Hmm the animation is mostly pretty bad as it all comes from animating over live actors. Too much in the uncanny valley with weird exaggerated movements that are totally unnatural. And besides an awesome set up and some great music, the movie really looses quality in the 3rd act, especially with Rasputin and that awful ending. Also it's kinda sad that the Don Bluth movie with the most success is the one that copied the Disney formula for money. Secret of Nihm and Land Before Time were more unique and not as popular though they do have a cult following. So I say Anastasia is rated pretty accurately: some people really love it, and some people thinks it's just OK.

The sad thing about her life is she had such a horrible end, and while the movie was so far from accurate as she died, the research didn't' come out until the 2000s she died. The sad thing is the elegance of the 1910s that the Romanovs and the many other Royals of europe was vanguished in a desire for a new system that in this the extreme case was a genocide of the aristocracy. The problem is that we keep making these romantic things, while suffering is real, and is needing to be reduced...the murder of people is never necessary.

I believe there was also a belief that the family was dabbling in dark magic. If memory serves from history class, the youngest boy was really ill, and the family met constantly with a questionable person (the namesake of the villain in this movie) for healing. So the entire family and staff were probably killed because they were believed to have been tainted by dark magic.
Um, no, but I can see how you might make that mistake. :) Rasputin was believed to have mystical healing powers through prayer, and Alexei's mother turned to him for help after regular doctors couldn't cure painful bleeding from his Hemophilia B. However, she started relying on him more and more and believed his prayers were working, and Rasputin visited the palace very very often. The ruling class of Imperial Russia started to turn against him and not like him, since he started getting more privileges than they had. They were also afraid of him influencing the government somehow, and wanted to stop this. He was shot to death for this in 1916 (a year before the Bolsheviks took power in 1917, and two years before the execution of the Romanov family in 1918). Rasputin, however, did not have anything to do with the family's executions. Their deaths were purely political during the Russian Civil War when the Bolsheviks took over and established communism in the country.

By the way, I'm a 2000's kid and I also watched this when I was little. It's one of my favourite movies. Not only the 90's generation enjoyed this movie.
Ughh my heart, this will always be one of my favorite animated movies ever. I love this scene and song so much, I used to sing along desperately while dancing hysterically through the living room. As a 90s kid, I'm really glad I grew up watching movies like this one and the Prince of Egypt
"Anastasia" is living proof that a movie doesn't have to be brand new in order to be good. Far too many young people today shun these masterpieces just because they're old, or because they're not action-packed.

My mom sang this to me too, because I loved this movie growing up. This song is very special to me. When I was five, I sang this to my grandfather over the phone when he was dying. And I lost my mom last year. So, it reminds me of those I lost and I hold it very near and dear to my heart.
Knowing the History of The Last Czar and his family, it was equally tragic learning the truth...and it wasn't until 2009 that DNA confirmed the tragic truth that they all died at the hands of The Communists that the remains of Anastasia and her brother Alexi were reunited with the rest of the Royal Family and laid to rest...they (The Last Czar, The Czarina, The Prince, and Princesses) are now saints in the Russian Orthodox Church....
I know their deaths were so tragic and I also hoped that two of the children were still alive, but I felt the same way when the DNA test confirmed they all died at the hands of the Bolsheviks
I'm gonna make sure my kids watch this movie. Anastasia is an instant classic, from the soundtrack, to the animation, to the relationships and storyline. It is truly a great movie and it breaks my heart that some kids in our current generation don't know this movie.
I always thought that this was a Disney movie for the longest time until I was in high school. Anastasia is so underrated, even though the animation in it is just simply stunning, and the music is beautiful! This song reminds me of my mom. It was "our" movie. The distance Anastasia feels when her memories, someone holding her safe and warm as a child, is how I feel about my memories with my mom. So familiar, the feeling, but you can't quite touch it again. My mom died in February. I miss her more than words could ever describe. Love you mom, hope I'll see you again soon.

I’m 15 and my little brother is 9. I watched this movie for the first time when I was younger than he was and I completely fell in love with it. My parents introduced it to me since they watched it when they were younger. I plan on showing this movie to my children one day. The hunchback of notre dame, Anastasia, the prince of Egypt, and many other are all masterpieces that should never be forgotten.

The theme of my childhood. I still remember having an Anastasia doll with a stand that danced to this song on a small blue cassette tape. I played it so often, I can't remember if it works anymore.
This song is so beautifully made. If you pay attention to the lyrics and how Anastasia sings this with the music... It paints such a clear picture and story of her memory of home & her grandma!! Even the title makes sense with the timing of events! A true masterpiece with the subtle hints of the scene where Anastasia tried to flee Russia with her grandmother but got left behind as she tried to get on the train, only to be knocked unconscious unable to leave Russia. It's ingenious how they matched the lyrics to the scene of their memory together in Russia, only for it to be used later again in the movie when they reunited in Paris ('Together in Paris' key for the music box even had a purpose) and they both recall this song together in a much happier tone. This movie was well executed and well ahead of it's time. The quality of being able to bring together kids and adults to appreciate and enjoy this movie is outstanding! It may not have been popular during it's release, but those who've watched this movie always go back to it. Truly Timeless and marvelous! 👏✨
I played this song to my 3 year lad niece to put her to bed (she doesn’t speak English) and she really liked it, it calmed her down. But after listening to it for a few times in a row she suddenly told me: “I don’t want to start crying listening to this song. Can you please play me something more cheerful!” I was lost for words 😳
This song is literally a masterpiece it makes me cry heavily every time and I don't know why not to mention how good the movie. I was born 7 years after this movie came out and I think it is sad how we can't have movies animated like this anymore and teens my age never got a chance to watch these amazing movies it just makes me want to cry.
This was the age of animation were the story was important not the effects or the overall realistic nature of the movie. I can see the movie in my mind with just the music and i haven't watched Anastasia in years. This too me is what makes animation a great thing, it can paint a world that otherwise would have been impossible with this world. EX: the Pixar theory
This is my favourite princess movie by far. I love the history, I love that they found a storyline that doesn’t rely on the romance and the princess doesn’t need saving, I love the beautiful dresses and the flashbacks, dreams etc I just love the way it makes me FEEL Best of all I love the soundtrack. It is THE best soundtrack for a princess movie I’ve ever heard. Beautiful songs from the protagonist AND the antagonist.

I have always felt a connection to this song and this movie. I never quite knew why, but for a long period of my life I thought I made this song up. I would hum it and dance to it in my head and none of my other friends knew what it was. It wasn't until just a few years ago I learned that it came from this movie, and I had no idea how I already knew the song, but once I saw the movie I loved it too. Turns out, when the movie was released I went and saw it with my Grandma (she passed away when I was in Elementary school) I never remembered the movie because I was too young when I saw it, but I remembered this song, and with the song came the memory of my Grandma which is why I love it so much. In a way, i kinda pulled off my own Anastasia story XD

One of the most haunting and beautiful animation songs ever. I wholeheartedly watched this film at least ten times in 1997 as a little girl. It also informed my interest in (the sad and true) Russian history later in life.
I wanted to growing up, never did. Twirled once by myself until I couldn't stand. I was a weird kid. Boys don't cry, boys don't dance. Not like this, boys don't have feelings. We do, we're just told to hide them by not only our family, but by our communities. I still wonder about this one moment, a memory I remember having less than the event itself. Used to imagine myself in that scene, wondering where my real family was. Spinning as this song happened, the movements in my thoughts. I played the music once by myself on the VHS I think, and the moment stayed with me. I cried once it was over, wondering what was wrong with me. I love to fight, I love the dark, I love videogames and martial arts. But I've never forgotten the feeling this song made me feel. Freedom, Hope, wanting a family. Not one that decided my life. But one whom decided to live with me, no matter what I was.

This movie was my favourite when I was little ('02 baby here) and I used to watch it every day but then kinda forgot about it until a few months ago, when in school a guy started playing that song on a piano. I almost started crying. It brought back so many happy memories and it also helped that the guy played the song FLAWLESSLY. I unfortunatelly don't know who the guy was, but thank you for that amazing moment ❤️
I loved this film when I was a kid, it made me want to read up on all the history surrounding the story which in turn gave it even more appeal. The song itself is haunting but beautiful.

Saw Anastasia again for the first time a couple of days ago and last night this song and "In the Dark of the Night" were taking turns playing in my head all through my shift. Once Upon a December is most definitely my favorite song in the entire movie, and the singer's voice is absolutely gorgeous.

I just watched the movie today for the first time in years. I was so lucky to have a mother that introduced me to classics such as this, even if I am a 2000's kid. I wish more parents did their kids this service like mine did. This scene makes me cry every time. The beautiful vast ball room and the glowing dancers magically bursting through the paintings, ugh.. Gets me every time.

Before 2009, everyone thought it was quite possible Anastasia had survived, because her body wasn't found with her family's. What everyone forgets, is her little brother's body wasn't found with them either. I love this movie, don't get me wrong, but I would've loved to see her little brother with her during the adventure. His death was just as tragic as hers.
I love how it goes from her remembering things to the ballroom to her singing about what she wants to remember. It’s a rundown of the movie in a 2 minute 48 second song.

I believe there was also a belief that the family was dabbling in dark magic. If memory serves from history class, the youngest boy was really ill, and the family met constantly with a questionable person (the namesake of the villain in this movie) for healing. So the entire family and staff were probably killed because they were believed to have been tainted by dark magic.
Um, no, but I can see how you might make that mistake. :) Rasputin was believed to have mystical healing powers through prayer, and Alexei's mother turned to him for help after regular doctors couldn't cure painful bleeding from his Hemophilia B. However, she started relying on him more and more and believed his prayers were working, and Rasputin visited the palace very very often. The ruling class of Imperial Russia started to turn against him and not like him, since he started getting more privileges than they had. They were also afraid of him influencing the government somehow, and wanted to stop this. He was shot to death for this in 1916 (a year before the Bolsheviks took power in 1917, and two years before the execution of the Romanov family in 1918).
Rasputin, however, did not have anything to do with the family's executions. Their deaths were purely political during the Russian Civil War when the Bolsheviks took over and established communism in the country.

Ughh my heart, this will always be one of my favorite animated movies ever. I love this scene and song so much, I used to sing along desperately while dancing hysterically through the living room. As a 90s kid, I'm really glad I grew up watching movies like this one and the Prince of Egypt

"Anastasia" is living proof that a movie doesn't have to be brand new in order to be good. Far too many young people today shun these masterpieces just because they're old, or because they're not action-packed.

My mom sang this to me too, because I loved this movie growing up. This song is very special to me. When I was five, I sang this to my grandfather over the phone when he was dying. And I lost my mom last year. So, it reminds me of those I lost and I hold it very near and dear to my heart.
Knowing the History of The Last Czar and his family, it was equally tragic learning the truth...and it wasn't until 2009 that DNA confirmed the tragic truth that they all died at the hands of The Communists that the remains of Anastasia and her brother Alexi were reunited with the rest of the Royal Family and laid to rest...they (The Last Czar, The Czarina, The Prince, and Princesses) are now saints in the Russian Orthodox Church....

I'm gonna make sure my kids watch this movie. Anastasia is an instant classic, from the soundtrack, to the animation, to the relationships and storyline. It is truly a great movie and it breaks my heart that some kids in our current generation don't know this movie.
I always thought that this was a Disney movie for the longest time until I was in high school. Anastasia is so underrated, even though the animation in it is just simply stunning, and the music is beautiful! This song reminds me of my mom. It was "our" movie. The distance Anastasia feels when her memories, someone holding her safe and warm as a child, is how I feel about my memories with my mom. So familiar, the feeling, but you can't quite touch it again. My mom died in February. I miss her more than words could ever describe. Love you mom, hope I'll see you again soon.

I’m 15 and my little brother is 9. I watched this movie for the first time when I was younger than he was and I completely fell in love with it. My parents introduced it to me since they watched it when they were younger. I plan on showing this movie to my children one day. The hunchback of notre dame, Anastasia, the prince of Egypt, and many other are all masterpieces that should never be forgotten.

If you pay attention to the lyrics and how Anastasia sings this with the music... It paints such a clear picture and story of her memory of home & her grandma!! Even the title makes sense with the timing of events!
A true masterpiece with the subtle hints of the scene where Anastasia tried to flee Russia with her grandmother but got left behind as she tried to get on the train, only to be knocked unconscious unable to leave Russia.
It's ingenious how they matched the lyrics to the scene of their memory together in Russia, only for it to be used later again in the movie when they reunited in Paris ('Together in Paris' key for the music box even had a purpose) and they both recall this song together in a much happier tone. This movie was well executed and well ahead of it's time.
The quality of being able to bring together kids and adults to appreciate and enjoy this movie is outstanding! It may not have been popular during it's release, but those who've watched this movie always go back to it.

This was the age of animation were the story was important not the effects or the overall realistic nature of the movie. I can see the movie in my mind with just the music and i haven't watched Anastasia in years. This too me is what makes animation a great thing, it can paint a world that otherwise would have been impossible with this world. EX: the Pixar theory

I have always felt a connection to this song and this movie. I never quite knew why, but for a long period of my life I thought I made this song up. I would hum it and dance to it in my head and none of my other friends knew what it was. It wasn't until just a few years ago I learned that it came from this movie, and I had no idea how I already knew the song, but once I saw the movie I loved it too. Turns out, when the movie was released I went and saw it with my Grandma (she passed away when I was in Elementary school) I never remembered the movie because I was too young when I saw it, but I remembered this song, and with the song came the memory of my Grandma which is why I love it so much. In a way, i kinda pulled off my own Anastasia story XD

Anastasia holds a special place in my heart, as it has beautiful music that I sang and danced to in my bedroom in pretty dresses and curled hair. I'm now 15 and I still watch the movie every weekend, I can probably recite all of the songs by memory. This movie was my favourite when I was little ('02 baby here) and I used to watch it every day but then kinda forgot about it until a few months ago, when in school a guy started playing that song on a piano. I almost started crying. It brought back so many happy memories and it also helped that the guy played the song FLAWLESSLY. This, Swan Princess, Prince of egypt and Help im a fish were absolute favourites of mine and still are to this day! I still watch them and sing to the soundtracks.

Some people held out hope that the young daughter, Anastasia, somehow made it out alive but apparently that wasn't the case

I just watched the movie today for the first time in years. I was so lucky to have a mother that introduced me to classics such as this, even if I am a 2000's kid. Before 2009, everyone thought it was quite possible Anastasia had survived, because her body wasn't found with her family's. What everyone forgets, is her little brother's body wasn't found with them either. I love this movie, don't get me wrong, but I would've loved to see her little brother with her during the adventure. His death was just as tragic as hers.
