Youth Service: Giving as Gospel Partnership - Strengthened to Give

The Lord Jesus in Matthew 6 exhorts us to store up for ourselves treasures in heaven. He continues to argue that where our treasure is, there our hearts will be also. One of the ways that we can store up treasure in heaven is by taking a part of our treasure and giving it back to God . Our giving expresses our trust in the fact that it is God, and not our treasure, that sustains us. As we part with our material possessions, we entrust ourselves to the One who is able to truly take care of us in the here and now but also who will reward us in the hereafter. However, if we are to be honest with ourselves, giving does not come naturally to us and thus we do poorly in this area. It is for this reason that we need to be strengthened in this grace of giving. As we look at different characters, may God indeed grant us the strength to willingly and cheerfully give of our treasures to Him.
The Philippian church acknowledged Paul as the apostle of God and went on ahead to partner with him in the work he was doing. Through their financial gifts, they amply supplied for all of Paul’s needs and therefore aided in the spread of the Gospel. Where the feet of the Philippians could not go, they money went and as a result they were equal partners with Paul in the work of the Gospel. We too, like the Philippians, can participate in the work of the Gospel through our financial gifts.
