    I'm from Sweden and tried this last year and I chewed it a lot and the taste was left in my mouth until the next day. And it's not a delicacy here, more lika a tradition that hangs on. It was the Vikings that came up with this way of storing fish on their long journeys at sea. Cheers 😊

    • @JonHop1
      @JonHop1 2 роки тому +1

      Also, the Viking did not eat it directly out of its fermented juices either. They would dry it after the fermentation and eat it with bread and other dishes. Not like this.. lol

    • @PCgamer923
      @PCgamer923 Рік тому

      It's not meant to be eaten alone, it's a survival food really. Just like a lot of food before canning, where it's heavily fermented/salted/preserved by other means. For example anchovies, you don't eat them out of the can. Many of these foods are meant to be put on different bread with other things on top. Not straight outta the can/what ever container you used unless your community was starving.

    I'm Swedish and I can eat it but for it to be ok it needs to have the bread, onions etc and on that I only use small pieces of the fish that I scatter around, more like seasoning. Another thing is that one usually drains away the brine, the brine sludge contributes a lot of the smell. Also, it is most often (almost always) eaten in a setting where one also has schnapps, beer etc so that probably dulls the senses a bit too. It smells horrible but the taste is not bad in itself but it is hard to get the taste with no trace of the smell.

    Get rid of the fluid, wash the filets, debone them if necessary, put sour cream on thinbread, some chopped onions and tomatoes and then put some of the filet on it. Then it is actually edible. Strong on the stomach though, so have a schnapps with it. NOBODY eats surströmming straight out of the can...

    These guys can gobble chilies with a zillion scovilles but can't down a tiny piece of fish...wtf??
    My dad served this for dinner several times per season (early fall). He grew up in a coastal town in northern sweden and surströmming was just a normal dish served at least once a week for dinner back then (1940's). He passed on the custom to me and I absolutely love it. I like to eat it old school i.e. no modern tricks to hide the wonderful aroma and taste. Open the can under a rag to prevent spraying. Serve with boiled potatoes and knäckebröd (some chopped red onion if you want to make it fancy). That's it...enjoy!!

    Well, you did _one_ thing right, you opened it outside. :)
    Seriously tho, doesn't look like there was anything wrong with that can. That's how it's supposed to smell. Perhaps a little on the aged side but we use to store cans for a year or two.
    But, I mean, for an untrained dude... Hell what did you expect? :D That brine is STRONG. If I'd give a foreigner a taste I'd rinse this fish thoroughly and serve with all the traditional sides. It's palatable that way, even good, trust me.
