Based on my experience, your advice is spot on. I have been down that rabbit hole a few times over the years and have experienced multiple hospital bills that had multiple errors. I would encourage everyone to always insist on receiving an itemized bill and then go through it with a fine tooth comb, every detail. Billing for things that did not happen or tests that were cancelled etc. When I have family members in the hospital I track everything that happens, including drs that check on them, every day they are in there and then compare it against the billing. I don't want the insurance being billed incorrectly any more than myslef!

As someone who is still not quite comfortable navigating the healthcare system here in the US after moving here many years ago, I have to say this video is not only very insightful but incredibly empowering as a participant of this for-profit healthcare system. I often feel an immense lack of agency when it comes to these topics (since most of us just accept the unfortunate reality that hospital bills are costly in nature, as opposed to thinking twice about that amount), and watching this video gave me a great sense of agency by equipping me with a lot of applicable knowledge that I previously didn't have. Thank you so much for making this video and for educating us!

Excellent information, Katie! As someone who has gone through the rigors of trying to clear up misleading, erroneous, and highly inflated medical bills, your advice and recommendations are fantastic! Thank you for tackling this issue. I only wish I had listened to this podcast a few years back (hahaha). Thank you again for bringing these issues to the forefront. ~Scott

I had an unexpected urgent (but not emergent) medical event this year that my crappy short-term policy did not cover (these things are basically useless) and had to pay out of pocket. I called and got quotes prior to scheduling but the final total bills still ended up being nearly double what I was estimating. Please please please call the billing departments and ask for itemized bill and apply for financial difficulty. Even if you have the money, they can review your case and lower the bill depending on the circumstances and especially if you are cash paying. My total would have been about $13,000 and I got it down to just under $9000. Still sucks but hey it's something.
ALSO I learned that sometimes the hospital will not offer you a discount until the bill has been sent 3 times to you (or whatever the "final" bill), perhaps in an attempt to get the most out of you. I was actually instructed by the billing office to wait until I receive my FINAL notice bill and then call them to settle. It does require you stay very on top of your deadlines so you don't get sent to collections and affect your credit, but general idea is don't pay without a fight!

Got it. Our healthcare system is broken. This is disappointing to know. Can you do a video on how to become a Canadian Citizen?

Would love to see the long format version of this topic posted here on youtube! Having visuals to go along with the discussion is really helpful. This is a topic that is high stress for a lot of people and we can use all the help!

Over the years I've occasionally had to pay something out of pocket (i.e the cash pay customer you mentioned). For example, for a given procedure it might cost $2600 if I use insurance, but if I cash pay then my bill is "only" $1800.
