  • In an apartment, there is no outdoor space (maybe just a small patio) and neighbors share walls. For this reason, you are wise to choose a parrot wisely because parrots are loud!
    Cockatoos are awesome!
They are one of my favorite charismatic, loving, playful and amazing parrots! However, they are also so loud that I've never had one. Even in an outdoor aviary, cockatoos can be defensing, I'm sorry to say. And there are several species of cockatoos in the genus: Mulligan cockatoo, Sulfur, Citron, Galah, Goffin and more! I can't speak to all of these, but I did pass up on a special Goffin because I heard him... Cockatiels are also in this genus, but these guys won't break any sound barriers and won't wake your neighbors.
Cockatiels are the second most popular parrot to keep because they are sweet, soft, cuddly and loving - sure they make sounds (and often sing or whistle) but they aren't near as loud as most their family.
Conures are similar, unfortunately. With few exceptions, like Green-cheeked Conures or Dusky Conures, the conure family is keen, sharply-intelligent and make great companions, but they too are loud.
Amazons, who sing and talk up a storm - and scream - and Macaws too. Loud. These guys need big houses or outdoor spaces in which to voice their wonderful selves.
Now that we've covered several species you are likely to be challenged by in an apartment, let's focus on great apartment parrots!
When it comes to parrots, size matters. Generally speaking, smaller parrots like Budgies and Parrotlets are going to be better apartment parrots because their size doesn't allow for as loud-a-scream!
Parrots are wonderful, intelligent birds that can create meaningful bonds with their keepers. They are social animals and do best when they have another parrot-pal. Even so, they will bond with you, if you spend time with them. They are curious about people and enjoy our company, just like we enjoy them.
A bored, lonely parrot can scream for attention - make sure that your parrots receive your love, company and caring. You don't have to always engage with them, but keeping them close by on a perch and spending time talking with them, cuddling with them or teaching them tricks will give you both something to bond about.
