I loved watching this as your detailed explanation was so helpful. I’m particularly interested in the way you use your brushstrokes as this really created energy to the painting. This has inspired me to take off to the coast today and try out my new plein air set up. Thank you.
As usual perfect balance with colors and atmosphere. The blue and then the reflective foam on the water nearest is brilliant… also the sand color is wow , really like this one !
I think all your muted grays cared this painting because the more saturated colors then pop effectively. Really good waves and shoreline -like the faint shadows under the white water making them look like they are rolling over the top of the wet sand!
I was going through some of your older wave painting videos gearing up for my upcoming trip to the Cape, and BEHOLD! Here is a brand new step by step! Thank you Michael. Beautiful results today. Wish me luck with our much smaller waves in the other side of the country.
The soft colors in this painting are so beautiful. Love watching you paint and your explanations of what your doing and thinking in real time is amazing. I've learned a lot from all of your sharing. Thank you.
You made this almost look easy. Those values and tones are sooooo close in reality and you totally whipped them into a wonderful design. Bravo as usual. Thank you for being so faithful in sharing.
Another awesome wave painting. I was rewatching a few of your older wave paintings yesterday too so it was nice to see this one pop up today. Thanks Michael.
Good morning Michael, I agree with others, this a new favorite, it has a thinned wave heading for my toes, it feels like it has just enough momentum to get to where the viewer is in the painting. Despite a hazy day you’ve properly set greens / blues, some reflection with turning, and about to crest waves, some gentle images, tallest of the white water, an artic owl faces us. Bottom, right foreground, a tip of sand furthest into the water, that’s the top right ear of house cat, a second ear, two reflecting eyes, his nose, he is laying down, looking to where you would be painting ❤️
The movement of the waves is caught in this still image. I froze it the video on it, at 12:34 minutes, went to sleep, and woke up six hours later like I had slept on the beach. Thanks.
Absolutely beautiful painting. I don't remember a painting of yours with this much low chroma. I'm going through Zoey Frank's latest exhibition catalogue and then I watch this video of yours. There are some real similarities of mood. Outstanding work.
Hey Mike... good to see you back at the beach! Really appreciate the go thru of colors and mixings for different areas ..."love painting waves" as you said and there it is! The foreground is especially great in this one... Been in the 70's mostly... mosquitos making plein air hard
Amazing watching the development of the ocean on your canvas. The results are so convincing! Was really wishing you were going to paint the boats on the sand with the beach and ocean in the background.
You were totally in your element with this one. It is a masterpiece. Maybe also, it is so appealing because there was excellent visibility for the painting itself and the camera was close enough so you could zoom in on your process. Perhaps the low light helped. But it was great to actually see the paint as you applied it. A great learning tool.
I watch your video's full screen and it appears the lens of the camera almost makes its own color sceme.. great painting I love your compositions, many many thanks for sharing
Michael, as always the way you handle waves are the best. Color, texture, movement. It’s like being there. Being in Florida I see a lot of ocean paintings. These waves are like our west coast of Florida. Thanks for sharing. . 🌴Tallahassee, Florida🌴
My palette is also a grey mid tone but I find that colours I mix on it often appear lighter than I thought/wanted on the painting surface. I might try taking on board your comment about thinking of it as a mid tone to help gauge values/tones of colours mixed.
Nice! From the video start to finish the ocean's chroma gradually increased, and it was fun to watch as your color choices appeared to follow suit. Oh, and the uninterrupted sound of the surf was a bonus. Have you ever thought about making an audio of the surf?
Another lovely painting Michael thank you. Any one tip for NOT muddying the paint. Is it having enough paint on the brush! I keep doing it😣. Hope your leg is better now.
Wonderful video. Fantastic painting. Have really been appreciating these of late, with your palette views and comments as well. Idk how you paint and record at the same time, but you do it so well! ;-) (I'm still smearing oil paint on unintentional things ... lol)
I have been bing watching your videos. I live in Akron, Ohio, not far from Lake Eire. I live close to The Cuyahoga Valley National Park too. I am putting together a plein air kit to go out play.
Perfect Thank you I have had a wave painting on the easel for a week just stuck --not knowing where to go /how to proceed next You gave me the answers Thanks again

Your videos and art are so inspiring! Not to mention relaxing and overall lovely. Thanks for sharing with us :) How can someone get into this? A total beginner but would I take a very tiny tiny first step by just taking my easel and painting outdoors in nature? Another comment- I love how you paint. it’s so very clear that you have a talent in the way that your mind sees the world as a potential for a canvas. And then once you start sketching, I don’t have the skill to make out what the details in the sketch are so I love the explanation, then when you start painting and then finish, every single time I’m like wow!! Wow, incredible, from a sketch in orange to a vivid colorful painting that makes anyone who is looking at it feel like they are actually in that beautiful landscape (beach, mountains, San Francisco city scape..etc) I simply love it!
Thanks, Maxime! I think the best way to get into it is to take an introductory oil painting class or workshop. It's really helpful to have someone explain the materials and basic painting process. I have a video talking about the subject: ua-cam.com/video/K3E-VQ3Xmxo/v-deo.html
Amazing painting as always! Recently I've noticed that I rely far too heavily on my references, it's gotten to the point where I feel like I know nothing about how things work. I'm incredibly frustrated with my lack of knowledge and I was wondering if you ever gone through the same thing? Do you have any tips?
Awesome vlog! Great painting! You catched that atmosphere beautifully! I love ocean sounds and beach! Cool! Btw. How comes there is so cold weather and wind? We have here, in the middle of Europe, very, very hot weather today. Have a good one! Cheers!
It allows me to paint faster. It also creates a very strong paint film, which is especially important in the thinner passages. You should use whatever medium works best for your process. 😊
Lovely painting, really love the composition, the colours, tones and values here, also the movement in it. 😍 One I would definately love to have in my home. Would you sell this via a request like this on UA-cam? I once (sometime last year) inquired about another of your paintings in the comments section of the respective video and you said yes at the time and named a decent price, but I still needed time to think about it financially and now I just can't find the video with the painting anymore. :/ So I am looking for another one of your wonderful paintings and this is lovely. It's probably bigger than the other one though. Anyway, would be happy to know if there is the possibility of collecting this in any case? 💙🙂
A few successful painting. Great relaxing foggy mood.
Thanks, Edith!
Michael. Your seascapes are second to none. Super relaxing to watch you paint in your natural environment.
Thanks, Chris!

This painting really captures the energy of the ocean, and yet its so calming. I love it!
like the shadow on the forward edge of the wave in the foreground
Great job Mike. The waves are rich and lively.
Thanks, Alec!
Really liked this. Painting sea can be very tricky.

Thanks, Heather! I'm jealous of your trip to the Cape. I'll return to paint Wellfleet waves someday! Have a wonderful time... and good luck!
Visiting my "neck of the woods"...have a great time! P.s ...the waves get bigger fall thru early spring and hurricane swells
Nice painting technique. You are one of the few . Well done!
Dioxizene purple is the way forward!! Love it Michael!! Thanks, as always for your videos.
Dioxazine Purple is cheap and powerful! What's not to love? 😂👍
Happy Fathers Day Michael, wishing you a day of happiness and enjoyment.
