Octopus Escapes - Storage Drawer - Episode 4

- This 4th episode of the Octopus Escapes series was inspired by a comment from one of our beloved viewers. We always pay close attention to your remarks and we aspire to giving all of your requests a shot. Here is what Leanne commented:
“Can Zipper be able to open one of the plastic storage drawers from the inside? Let’s give it a shot to see how he can open the drawer and get out.”
This was a very intriguing experiment, as the octopus must exhibit a high degree of dexterity, intelligence, as well as coordination of its arms in order to achieve its escape. To push the drawer, the octopus has to figure out that it needs a steady surface where it can lean against to exert its strength.
It took only a few minutes for our octopus to understand that it can use some of its arms to steady itself on the top of the drawer and the rest to push the drawer open.
We were able to find completely transparent plastic storage drawers that enabled us to better observe the deft use of suckers and arms and to admire once again the wondrous escape capabilities of this amazing cephalopod, the octopus. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
Oh, he seemed desperate to get out, and at one point I swear the thought went through his mind "What if I can't get out of here!" Then he went straight to his home as soon as he got out. Poor thing. Really showed octopus brilliance, but I think he got a little scared and just wanted the safety of home. Bless him.
This one bothered me for the octopus. He was manic.
This just seems a little traumatizing for him or her. After it went straight to it's safe place. 😦
@@IslandKate But getting him into the box to begin with had to have stressed him out and when he does get out, he goes straight to his house. This is just my humble opinion and I respect your view of it.
yea it seemed like he was forced in there. maybe let him go in there of his will and then put the lid on or close the drawer.
@@Hitomaru-shiki.sensha yours was a better idea. I wonder how all of this is going to affect him long term. I hope they only bring him in this tank for these experiments. I hope his real home where they keep him is more of a natural environment.
I agree, he swam to his safe place right after getting out of the drawer. Being closed up in a confined space and trying to get out is hard on any living thing.
@@katemaxwell2804 I sure agree with that.
At the end it was like one tentacle was doing this 💪 "Invincible!!"
I'd love to see one of these guys vs a floating pirate ship. Just to see them drag it under like in the old movies.
You're mistaking octopuses for the kraken.
hahaha
@@ThePrufessa the kraken was an octopus.
@@helvis7336 no...it was not. It was a sea monster that resembled an octopus. If it were an octopus then they would've said release the octopus instead of release the kraken. Next time think about what you're saying.
@@helvis7336 on top of that most depictions of the kraken resembles the giant squid.
Thank you for taking my suggestion. 😀 That’s intriguing. Zipper (and octopuses in general) is very intelligent that he can figure out on how to open the drawer to get out. 🐙
Suggestion: Give one or more octopuses a "china marker" type marker that will write underwater on the sides of the tank. See whether they draw with it. Write something on the outside of the tank and see whether they attempt to write, or whether writing makes any impression on them
Ace Lightening, love that idea!!
You can also suggest this on their website
@@TheAcquibajo I think of this channel as "Annoy an octopus until he does something interesting, and record it". So how about annoying the octopus with something interesting to begin with?
Ace Lightning Well, holding a marker and writing seems like a very difficult task for an octopus.🐙
@@TheAcquibajo So it'll be a challenge.
Me: frantically cheering for the octopus...yessssss!!!
Wife: you're watching what??
Hope our little man isn't traumatized :) Love y'all!! 👍
Not certain our little friend enjoyed this experiment he looked anxious most of the time
🙌 I love these clever little creatures so much 🥰😍
Lol I was holding my breath for him.
I loved it when he got out he spread out all his legs as if to say "Yes, I did it"! It took more than 5 minutes so this was a real challenge.
I know almost nothing about octopuses. But it looks to me that this little guy was really distressed while imprisoned in the plastic drawer. Glad he made it out and got back to the safety of his home.
Are you looking to the music for cues? It is a tad overdramatic...
@@010203109 Revisited the video clip with the music in mind....and it does put an emotional spin on the plight of the octopus.
Didn't like how frantic he seemed.
What an amazing creature. The way it moves is magnificent and its charismatic nature is beyond imagination! Cudos Octolab!
Is this not stressful for him? Poor 🐙🙁
I agree, I was stressed watching this
He/she went straight to their normal home afterward. I think they were traumatized IMO
🐙😢
Is the octopus upset or frightened or is he enjoying the puzzle knowing he isn’t in deadly danger?
Wow... they are so smart! It really is fun and fascinating to watch them problem-solve.
It's unbelievable their intelligence 🐙
That was fast, I love these animals.
Would have liked to have seen a food reward after his escape. Some way to indicate to him this is a game, not a life or death scenario.
Gubbah: You might well be correct, but my point is there is not 100% certainty. I admit my observation is based only on what appears in these published videos. Perhaps there are unseen behaviors that indicate he knows it’s a game and is unstressed... much like a dog wagging its tail while playing fetch. It might be useful for this content provider to address this in a future video.
Would have loved to have seen a live baby crab in the lower tray for him to figure out how to get
@@TheAstroflight Given how many people try to make their cats into vegans despite them being obligated carnivores, insisting that they can just supplement that away without any regard to what the cat wants, this is probably depressingly correct. Well, unless the animal is seen as a monster. Where I live, we have a serious population problem with a lot of herbivore creatures (mainly deer and turkey, mostly from lack of predation vs. habitat destruction) because people keep proclaiming that we need to kill more mountain lions and bears because, gasp, they kill things. No shit - it's the actual natural order. Even though there have been no human deaths and only a handful of pet deaths, people insist the more 'dangerous' animals should be killed off more. Maybe pay attention to your pets, don't let your kids wander off into the forest alone, and apply to the Feds if one of your sheep out of hundreds gets dragged off for compensation.
It's amazing to me that humans have gotten so spoiled in the last century that any kind of meat-eating by any living creature is looked down upon and seen as barbaric while squawking about how they embrace nature.
Wow They are extremely intelligent.
Amazing video as always! So dramatic...I particularly liked the replay, always fascinating to see the moment of escape from different perspectives
One of the most beautiful "replays" I have seen in my life.
It was thrilling to watch Octopus fiddle around the drawer with all its arms...at once!
Seemed scared! 😢
It is really interesting these guys love hidey holes, but obviously hate to be confined.
Fricking brilliant!!
Way better than me at escape rooms.
I think he enjoys the challenge. 🤔
So majestic!
He doesn't need to open the drawer to get out - he can just slither through the space between the drawer and the frame
I'd be more impressed if he could assemble a set of IKEA storage drawers!
❤️🐙
Clever girl...
Now I can get out of FaceBook jail!!
Ever since the lantern video, I look for colour flashes after achieving the escape. I've only noticed them for the lantern - he did not seem happy that time! Was that the first 'escape' test, or possibly the most confined? Maybe he is now confident, from memory and experience, that he will never be genuinely trapped in anything small by his Octolab friends.
He is smarter than some people I know..😂😅
A rig that requires the octopus to place 1 marbel/weight in tube 1, 2 marbels/weights in tube 2, and 3 marbels/weights in tube 3, to release a nice snack.
Are the octopuses kept in those tiny tanks, or are they placed there for the experiments? I hope they are kept in a large tank that has everything as if they were in the ocean.
I love them
A clear water balloon with a treat inside. It would be fun to watch it get the treat out.
I think he flicked off the camera at the end
The colors tests were interesting. I've been wondering if an octopus would prefer a hiding space lit by certain colors over others, if complete dark wasn't possible. This Storage Drawer episode inspired me to ask. Might be done with containers against the corners?
It's too bad lighters don't work underwater, because if they did and this guy had one, he could end up the video by reaching out of his nest and holding the flame up in triumph.
And just like that!
Here I am back on OctopusTube.
She/he seemed so stressed! I know she's well taken care of, but putting unnecessary stresses on him seems not great.
He looked like he was in claustrophobic panic, moving forward and back like that.
Exactly what I was thinking!
This gave me an idea. place a food item inside a clear version of the nested Russian wooden dolls. Maybe made out of clear lucite? Drill a few holes here and there so the crab can breathe. See if he octopus can open it and how long it takes.
Does it learns? When put again on the same situation, it escapes faster?
That's a smart boi
👎🏻 He appeared to be traumatized, poor fella.
I once saw a video that had a fish in a mobile tank that was rigged to move in whichever direction the the fish was trying to swim. Have you considered giving your subjects a mobile tank to see where they drive it? They could use a joystick...they are smart enough to learn. What would they do with the relative independence? Would they visit specific people/places?
ua-cam.com/video/YbNmL6hSNKw/v-deo.html
How much do they learn from the experiments? Would he remember how to get out if he was placed in the drawer again? Would it take him less time to figure out a similar scenario?
I agree with Blue eyes. This doesn't look like an experiment, it looks like torture.
A reasonable challenge that they can conquer in a short amount of time isn't torture. Intelligent animals in captivity grow bored and unhappy when not given enrichment like this that are similar to challenges they face in the wild. Think of it this way: escape rooms for humans aren't torture, they're challenges that you have to strive to complete--there's a limit of usually an hour and if you are struggling, you can get help. I think a food reward at the end would have been great, though.
When I first see that “wise old thinking eye” in video I laugh out loud! How can something so.......be so absolutely beautiful...!
What happens if you play the octopus sounds from ocean animals, like whales and dolphins, and other animals of the seas that make sounds? maybe even ocean birds sounds?
I didn't like that experiment. I could tell he or she was getting stressed out because the skin tone was getting dark and I could feel the frustration and stress. If it was down the other way around that he or she could try to get himself in at least that wouldn't have been as stressful on the animal.
Smarty Pants
Is this experiment okay? He looks kinda frantic...
Idk, but it seems a little much for him?
ps. I'm sure you wouldn't do anything to stress out an octopus, but I had to ask. 🥺
I thought he looked like he was panicking, Even his color was showing he was mad.
I felt like he was really stressed and unhappy. Many this was too much for him.☹️
He was focused to be sure and immediately went to his safe gourd.
@@lizannewhitlow1085 He sure did!!!
How do you reward him so he knows he's done a good thing?
He did not like that challenge.
show him how a drawer works first. unless you already did. to demonstrate its ability to learn quickly how we do things like opening a jar when shown he will know to twist instead of guessing a long time. human things are alien to it as it is alien to us.
how the hell do you even set up these scenarios lol

@@Hitomaru-shiki.sensha no like how do you get the octopus to get into these contraptions
I just wish humans could just enjoy & observe & not always have to “experiment”
I’m getting stressed out watching it
wryyyyyyyy
Great Channel honestly appreciate your work but not a fan of this experiment. He changed colour and movement became frenetic - i get the purpose behind experiments but this one felt cruel tbh. Can you also pls get him a bigger tank w more interesting natural grass and stone?
I dont for a minute think you intended ill by this, you obviously love these creatures, but Please don't trap sentient beings for entertainment ...Imagine the stress the octopus would've felt finding itself imprisoned.
I felt like he was panicking in this one. 😩 And when he got out gave a big F*** You! to us humans
Most of the time your experiments seem benign, This time however, the octopus looked as if it felt trapped, and seemed rather disturbed and frantic. Sorry Octolab, this is a miss for me.
me too. so everyone who finds this disturbing hit the Unlike button.
I guess you want to see how their minds work. I can't condone a lot of the stuff you're doing, though. Put yourself in the octopus's place. I see it as degrading, and disrespectful of another being.
This was unnecessary 👎🏻👎🏻
