Watching the old scenes, it feels like evesdropping ... time stops and we see a family in conflict and here a husband and wife having a heartfelt discussion on how to fix things. Brilliantly written and acted. I remember watching with mom in the 60's and 70's and can understand why it was the #1 soap opera for years.
Some really great acting here from Helen Wagner. When I watched this show in the 1990s Nancy had very few scenes and I never really got to see her talent.
Helen Wagner had a genius for taking the words of a script and bringing them to life with total truth. I think she incapable of making a false move or striking a false note.
Sadly, every episode doesn’t exist. Pretty much the entire decade of the ‘70s has been erased. There are various episodes from the late ‘50s and ‘60s here on UA-cam. Im not sure if every episode from those decades exist. Late ‘70s episodes do exist only because of the dawn of the VCR. Same goes for episodes from the ‘80s and beyond. I would love to know what episodes do exist, because I would love to watch as many existing episodes that are out there. So many streaming options that you would think this would be the route to go. PLUTO TV already has a Soap Channel, but it only airs episodes of Y&R and B&B from the last few years. I wish they would their lineup. I would love to watch every episode from the ‘70s. There were so many amazing stories during that time. I started watching World Turns in 1977. Maybe someday. 😊😊
Amazing when you realize that these episodes were televised LIVE on the east coast, recorded to videotape, and then broadcast later in other parts of the country. Many of the episodes were destroyed because videotape was expensive, therefore they were reused multiple times.
"Debbie" was a wild child and her sister Alice was so sweet. It would a few years later that the Hughes learn that Janice had died...And Don finally returns to Oakdale.
1963, probably .. a few weeks before thanksgiving .., a few weeks before the episode interrupted by a little "faux pas" in Dallas .. The thanksgiving theme is present in both episodes
Debra Banks Procter & Gamble wanted out of the soap opera business, so the end of GL and ATWT was only a matter of time. The production company didn't want to produce these shows anymore, and CBS didn't want to air them, either. The shows didn't stand a chance even with better writing.
@@mysky That's not entirely true. P&G did want out of the soap opera business but CBS did offer to buy ATWT and P&G refused. If a stable network company like CBS had taken over the reins perhaps they would've increased the budget so better writers could've been hired but P&G was notoriously selfish with their properties and would rather see their shows fade out of sight, rather than let another entity have them. As I understand ATWT was not the only soap that P&G refused to sell.
SoapQueenie I don’t believe CBS would have increased the budget even if it bought the show from P&G. Every soap’s budget was getting slashed and the bottom-line and theory was any other show would be less expensive to produce and make more profit than a soap. Les Moonves gave interviews indicating that ATWT and GL had run their courses.
One of the best soap operas ever on television. Happy 65th Anniversary

I wish they sold DVD sets of ATWT the complete series!
Why don't they?
That would be awesome.
Or stream
If they released all the episodes on dvd it would take you years to watch them all

To Mark Burwell: I agree ,ATWT would still be on the air if it not had been written right

Does anyone know what year this was ? I'm thinking 1959

I think this scene is from November, 1963.
1958.
What Mark Burwell, said---hear, hear!!!!
If the writers wrote better, As The World Turns,Edge Of Night, Search Of Tomorrow, Guiding Light, and others would be airing today

People like us deserve better when it comes to soap operas and the production companies who want to do right by us
